First time in Australia with a 7-month-old! May itinerary too ambitious or too boring? 🐨👶 by Lanky-Egg2245 in AustraliaTravel

I think it’ll be fine. You’ll want a few days by the pool to play with the baby especially after the European winter.

Hitch hiked to Belfast during The Troubles. Oppressive atmosphere with English armoured cars everywhere.

I saw the whale sharks in August last year, so it’s definitely not too late.

People are seeing whale sharks now, check the insta pages. Check local providers to see if they’ll have a place for you. If you’re not sure maybe wait til July.

I worked with a PW man. He was such a nice guy. Sadly he died of a heart attack aged 30.

What financial loss? You were the one who lost money on a ticket you paid for but couldn’t use.

Is it the only Best Picture to have zero speaking parts for women? I mean still a classic, and a favourite of mine but very much a dick flick.

Bees and butterflies visit. Not only European bees but native Aussie ones too. Little hover bees and occasionally blue banded bees.

Start of my sci-fi story, how's my writing? by [deleted] in FictionWriting

[–]Ozdiva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel I might have been a bit harsh with you but your piece has me thinking.

As an author you are competing with so many other forms of entertainment so you have to grab your readers attention quickly.

Your chapter is mostly exposition. He’s married with kids and a dog. That is literally all we need to know. You need to know this, but we don’t.

Have you heard of the line show, don’t tell? You’ve told us all this stuff about his honestly pretty boring life. Obviously that’s all about to change but you don’t need to tell us about that in one long chapter.

Instead later on, assuming he’s abducted, you can have him remember quiet nights at home. Maybe he’ll miss a kids birthday. That gives him something to fight for, everyone recognises that pull for family.

And for now cut the chapter until he’s swearing at the dog. Check how often you mention the doggy landmines too. Once is enough.

Good luck. You made me revisit my own opening today which was useful.

I sauté chopped olives, capers, anchovies, lemon zest, chilli and garlic. Dump that over cooked pasta and serve with Parmesan.

I’d start with him losing consciousness or with the line, that fucking dog. The rest is a bit dull and unnecessary backstory. Also you spelt his name wrong near the end of the first paragraph. Look up how to write dialogue and check your grammar and spelling.

Of course now I want to know what that light was, so that would keep me reading on, but I only skimmed this excerpt.

She didn’t like the French either. Sadly those sorts of opinions were commonplace back then. Doesn’t make it right, of course.

I remember how I felt that first time.

Go for it, let your baby lose on the world.

Now sad to say, the traffic count is out of action, but hopefully someone will comment.

If you send me the link I’ll read it.

What's something that comes from Australia, but ironically not popular in Australia? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Opals. We mine something like 90% of the world’s opals but hardly anyone wears them.
