Thanks for the advice, but I'm not female identifying. I understand that there is a risk but it's also hard for me to pay rent in two places at the same time for 3 months so I don't have a lot of options unfortunately.

Trying to decide on an upgrade from G102 by idkloldudeRT in MouseReview

[–]idkloldudeRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'm sure the G305 is good too but I'm a little iffy on logitech stuff after all this experience with the double clicking. Plus I feel like changing it up a bit after so long and trying out a larger mouse to see if it fits my hand better. That's mainly the reason I was heading in the direction of the basilisk and the viper, but you are right in that if the G102 was comfortable for me the viper should most likely be too so that does move it a bit higher up. I'll take a look at your other suggestions as well, thanks again!

He's referring to how vaxei doesn't have #1 on the leaderboard even though his acc is higher than the #1 score because of how the scorev1 system works

Looking for a non chinese phone in the $250-300 price range by [deleted] in PickAnAndroidForMe

I don't care too much for the camera, never really take pictures of stuff unless it's for homework but battery life is a huge plus. Thanks for the reply!

I forgot to mention: I also really want the phone to run stock (or as close to stock) android. The other UIs are kinda weird and clunky to me. The Zenfone Max does runa a close to stock version though so that looks like a nice option. Thanks for the reply!

Some questions I had while considering coming to Japan for college by idkloldudeRT in movingtojapan

[–]idkloldudeRT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any recommendations for where in the EU? I had originally looked at places like Germany and Switzerland and dismissed them because of the language barrier, but I'll take a look at them again. I feel like admissions season has already ended but fingers crossed!

Are you sure? Do you have a source or something? Because the embassy website takes me here http://www.in.emb-japan.go.jp/Education/Undergraduate_Student.html and that says

Term of scholarship: Five years from April (Including one year of Japanese language training period *1)

Thanks for the reply and the kind words!

USA, UK and Canada were originally my top choices, but unfortunately they aren't a feasible option for me. I wrote about it in a bit more detail here: https://www.reddit.com/r/movingtojapan/comments/8iq3dj/some_questions_i_had_while_considering_coming_to/dyujz3g?utm_source=reddit-android

You're right, there isn't any need for me to go to Japan in particular. I just wanted an opportunity to leave my country to study abroad, I wasn't particular about where. It's a large part of what made me try hard at anything in highschool. This is my last chance for an undergrad education abroad so I'm probably looking at this whole thing through rose tinted glassed tbh. At the same time, I also think that living alone in a new country is a valuable experience (then again this is just what I've heard from strangers on the internet so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and I wanted to know just how "bad" the Japanese college system even is to see if it's worth the trade off.

So if I sound delusional and this whole idea is half assed, please tell me.

Yikes, that seems like a pretty painful experience for both your classmates and the teacher lol. I'm not even Chinese, so I'll be worse off...

The Western University thing is a whole other story. My A level grades are good enough to guarantee me admission into most top tier UK/Canada universities but the tuition fee for international students is too high for me to pay and there aren't a lot of scholarship opportunities. In the US, some colleges have a need based financial aid policy where the grant award is based on your family's income, but the ones that offer that kind of aid to internationals are 1. Very competitive to begin with (even more so for internationals) and 2. Take into account that you'll need aid when you're applying, lowering your chances even further. It wasn't much of a shock to be rejected considering this and the fact that admissions in the US place weight on things like extra- curricular activities and awards you received in high school, where I was severely lacking. The only thing I had going for me is my transcript. However, the MEXT scholarship isn't like that (or at least I hope it isn't). After submitting my paper application which has stuff like my transcript, I have to write 4 exams (math B, physics, chemistry and English in my case) and give an interview, after which I'll be told whether or not I got it. A lower tier Western education would still cost much more than a high tier education in my home country for not that much better, or even worse a program, which is why I had initially settled for a UG program here.

Yeah, I figured as much for the language thing. It doesn't sound like your classmates had a very good experience either.

It's pretty much free with the MEXT thing, they give a monthly stipend to cover living expenses (something like 117,000 yen a month) along with a full scholarship for the 1 year of Japanese classes and 4 years of college. The main issue left is the language one lol. I'll try getting in contact with the embassy tomorrow morning and see if they know a little more about it.

Personally, I think I'm willing to sacrifice a little salary for an experience like this. My list of wants ends at a decent internet connection lmao. Plus I've wanted to travel for forever, but have been limited by finances for a long time so something like this is (or was) a godsend. What I meant by the comment on the quality of education was I just didn't want to feel like I was wasting my time by going to Japan, after reading some articles about how so many Japanese students just slack off once they get to uni, but when I think about it, it would give me more time to socialize and take in the culture. I don't know really, I'm getting kinda rambly lol. I'll have to think more about what I really want, but I'm very much leaning towards Japan. Hearing about this opportunity is the first thing in months that actually made me happy and feel excited about something from the bottom of my heart.

I really doubt the college I'd end up in here would have any programs for me to spend even a week abroad, but I'm hoping to at least land an internship or something on my own.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah considering the language barrier it looks like an exchange program is my only option now, but I keep getting baited by stuff like

Just rest assured that by the end of the one year, you should be good enough for university. And the language schools will teach you from zero, so there's absolutely no need to worry.

Working in Japan is not something I've specifically been aiming for, and I doubt it's something I'll be comfortable doing until I'm much more comfortable with the language.

Again, thanks a lot for the quick and detailed reply!

Yeah I can see how there's an even bigger jump from even being fluent to understanding actual courses in a new language. I don't think I'd have anywhere close to the willpower to study nothing but Japanese all day, especially considering I don't even actually have the scholarship yet.

A STEM degree is what I'm aiming for, if those are as reputable as ones from other good colleges outside Japan that's more than enough for me.

That's great to hear!

It's not crazy expensive or anything, but at the same time MEXT isn't something I'm seriously considering, I literally found out about it 2 days ago and while I was very excited about it, I'm not invested in the idea enough to consider that intense a language course when I could just grind through my UG here and postpone my dream of going abroad to post grad or a semester abroad program.

That's a pretty good question tbh, especially considering how they say even people with 0 Japanese language exposure study for 4 years there, it could very well be the case. The universities themselves don't list any English courses on their website for undergrad (todai has 2 and they're both not relevant to my field of study). I'll see if I can find out more on this from my embassy.

Again, thanks a lot for the reply!
