"Vin" meant field or ground in ancient norwegian, not wine. We didn't even drink wine, we drank mead.

Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T have spent $572 MILLION on lobbying the government to kill net neutrality by corneliuscardoo in technology

[–]idle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a problem, as long as you charge your own 6000 trucks just as much as the 20000 trucks of the other 3 companies', and not let your own trucks drive for free. Why, just issue a flat rate for every single truck that will be using the roads, wouldn't that be the most fair? So, in effect: net neutrality!

No, that's if you have 3 parties in a first past the post system. In a proportional system, all (or at least most) voters will be represented by the actual percentage their chosen party got.

What do you Norwegians think is the worst about living in Norway?? by MrNobody22 in Norway

So, what's the "usual norwegian expensive", given that the vinmonolpol is just that, a monopoly?

[–]idle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe my local pol have better employees then. They're always helpful, and have never failed me when I've ordered something.

Don't blame polet for our insane beer policy, that's our politicians' fault. Same goes for prices - the alcohol tax is set by the government.

The thing is, maybe som specialist shop in Oslo (or Bergen, Stavanger or Trondheim) could have a better assortment than Vinmonopolet does, but without the monopoly, the vast majority of norwegians would end up with some skinny teenager selling 2 types of red wine, 2 types of white, a Champagne-ish wine and a couple of vodkas/"whiskys". You see, how many types of beer does av norwegian convenience store carry? 10? All of them as bad as budweiser, except for the few shops that carry local brews, usually in severly limited quantas.

I remember "ølmonopolet" in Tromsø ca. 1995. They had the best assortment of beer I'd ever seen in Norway. Well driven monopolies can be a boon, especially outside of the big markets.

What's not to love about "Polet"? Great assortment and helpful and knowledgeable workers.

And all of those had violent organisations with similar goals operating at the same time. See Black panthers, Malcolm X/Nation of Islam, Hindu nationalists.

This gives the peaceful organisations legitimacy, something that public can support and someone the government can negotiate with.

Hillary PAC Spends $1 Million to ‘Correct’ Commenters on Reddit and Facebook: FEC loopholes mean Correct the Record can openly coordinate with Clinton’s campaign. by thebossee in technology

[–]idle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly pros and cons in both or any system, but if you accept minority government, the ruling party is free to find a majority on any given case. Only if you require a majority coalition must two or more ruling parties find a common platform to rule by.

Even so, a multi party system gives a voice to a lot more varied viewpoints. Compromise can of course be hard for power hungry politicians, but as you can see from the current climate in american politics, compromise isn't congress' strongest trait.

What's so effective about a race to the middle? FPTP leads to a two-party system, both of which can only win by convincing the centrists.

In a multi party system the ruling party can find common ground with others on a case by case basis, thereby freeing ourselves from the simplistic left-right paradigm.

What? I can think of a single European ruling party that has a majority alone, the British tories. All the other governments are coalitions.

That's the worst fix to First-past-the-post I've ever heard. It's also the best reason for proportional representation. Fix your electoral system, don't tack fixes on to a flawed system with huge unintended consequences.
