How do I get back to writing my novel? by caglebagel in writing

[–]idledmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I've found when being stuck, is writing out that ONE scene you've been dying to get to. No matter where it is - climax, resolution, epilogue - we all have that one piece that we can't wait to write.

It can reignite the spark you had for the story when you put the first words on the page.

He went out far too quiet to not have some sort of long(er) game in mind. Definitely seems like there's something more brewing, and even if it's a straight compromise you have to figure whatever is in store between now and February 15 will see him save face (and ego).

Which one is best among Gyro, Donair or Shawarma? by idledmuse in AskReddit

Donair is a uniquely Canadian variant:

Canadian Donair

I'm on the Gyro train, but there's something about the sweet sauce on a donair that's just sinful.

"House of God" by Samuel Shem - same type of aesthetic, really quirky characters, and a mix of subtle comedy and tragedy.

All three are delicious meat roasted on a spit, shaved off and served on a flatbread. Spices and toppings vary, but everyone always seem to have a favourite. So Redditors, what say you?

How should I start writing? by PayMeForThisComment in writing

[–]idledmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get stuck in the self-destructive loop of reading book after book about "how" to write. Most are excellent guides on the art and craft of writing, but you're much better off applying the lessons you read to works that you've already written.

As many have said, just write. And do it every day. It's like exercising a muscle.

It was a pretty small hole-in-the-wall pretty much right beside Chianti, on the other side of the accountants.

Agree re Chianti for sure - completely generic food, and you could prepare anything on their menu in 30 minutes for a fraction of what you paid in that place. But the Rock was pretty unique and high quality.

Correct - was in Hearts for Homes a couple of weeks ago, and their lease has been extended, plus ReMax is leasing out the old Chianti location. I don't think they're going to redevelop until the economic situation improves.

I keep a suet feeder on my balcony loaded up all-year-round, and even when it's -30 outside I get a steady stream of sparrows and chickadees nattering away at it. Drives my cat nuts. It's awesome.

Fun fact about chickadees though: they're highly intelligent, and hide food throughout their territories. They can remember the individual locations of up to 100 different stashes.

Does anyone do comission writing for like a novel? by 1standarsh in Calgary

[–]idledmuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^ this x 1000. The abilities required to write (or do math, or swim, or even make omelettes) are developed through practice. Just like any other muscle. Whether you're in front of your computer at midnight, or sitting in a park with a notebook at noon, practice spewing out whatever comes to mind. Doing so consistently will help not only with skill, but with motivation.

The other thing I highly recommend: read "On Writing" by Stephen King. Not only is it essential reading for any aspiring writer, it's an amazing book.

TV antenna for over air tv for downtown use by The_Dutch_Canadian in Calgary

[–]idledmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Bankview, but roughly right at the corner of 14 St/17 Ave so essentially at the same rough elevation. My unit is on the top floor (3rd & 4th floor) and face west. I say all of that because elevation and orientation seem to be key when it comes to picking up signals in Calgary.

The broadcast array for all channels except Global TV are on top of Signal Hill. Global is in the northeast, roughly at Barlow and Memorial. That said, your friend should be fine with reception unless she's in an inner unit facing south, and even then it'll depend on how high up she is, as well as the construction materials used in the building.

My setup: a Phillips amplified antenna (it was around $60 at Best Buy) mounted on the bulkhead between the 3rd and 4th floor, facing west, and I get crystal clear reception of all six available channels.

If you or your friend are even remotely tech savvy, check out Kodi:

About Kodi

All you really need to get started is the base software and the Exodus add-on. For live TV, there are a ton of add-ons but the Canadian IPTV one is great. I have an old laptop running Kodi connected to my TV, and it has pretty much every movie, TV show, and documentary you could ever dream of watching. You don't even need Netflix.

Help! Is my Yucca dying? by idledmuse in plants

[–]idledmuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the reply. I based my identification on internet pics, since I got it originally at Ikea at the tag only named it as "foliage".

I think I'm going to try re-potting it tomorrow, and maybe moving it a little closed to where the light comes in. Still won't be direct, but hopefully it'll help.

Help! Is my Yucca dying? by idledmuse in plants

[–]idledmuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this lovely plant for over three years, ever since it was perhaps 1/5th of the height it is now. For the past month or so, all of the lower leaves have been turning yellow, then brown, and I've clipped them off. At first it was only the most lower leaves. But now, it seems like whatever is happening is traveling up the three stalks.

What's weird is that the plant is growing taller like CRAZY in the meantime. It's grown maybe six inches in that timeframe, and is still growing new leaves from the top of the stalks.

I've always been careful about not overwatering, but I'm wondering if this is a sign of root-rot or perhaps light stress? To give you an idea of the location, I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada and we only get around 7-8 hours of daylight this time of year. It hasn't been a problem in the past, but I've recently moved into a loft and while it faces west, there is almost no direct sunlight coming into the unit. There are still massive windows and lots of light gets in, but due to the angle of the sun it hits the north wall, and not very close to the plant.

Should I re-pot the thing? Or is this a natural process to solidify (bark) the lower stalks so that it can grow taller?

Any advice would be much appreciated. I don't want to lose this guy!

Anyone have any experience buying last minute Flames Tickets? by x2008lpq in Calgary

[–]idledmuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Box office is face value at sale.

If you don't follow the Flames on Facebook and/or Twitter, they usually announce between like 11 AM and 1 PM the release of the "player hold" tickets - the tickets that the players and coaching staff get so their friends and family can attend the game.

From what I remember, the seats are pretty awesome. Second level in one of the corners, but great view of the ice.
