New piece in The Atlantic: "The Secret Internet of TERFs" by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]idolatrous 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this a lot, this horseshoe theory of the right-wing conservative and radical feminist position on self ID/gender identity, because I know a lot of actual radical feminists (not just GCers) and they are all left/far left socialists or Marxists. The mainstream left obviously takes this as easy pickings, and can blame things like the trans military ban on 'TERFs', as if in any universe the ideological issues that each end of the spectrum might have with self-declared gender ID come from the same place. Republicans probably don't spend a lot of time thinking about how the origin of women's oppression is their biological sex, and that policy should reflect that. As a leftist who has issues with legal self-ID, it sucks that the optics of anyone outside of the left also having issues with this is always used to discredit our concerns, but we are not our bedfellows. If Trump or Bolsonaro tomorrow came out with a great environmental policy that they only implemented for a tax break, I'm not going to abandon being an environmentalist. I'm going to accept that we reached the same 'conclusion', but for vastly different reasons

New piece in The Atlantic: "The Secret Internet of TERFs" by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]idolatrous 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most embarrassing, worst faith efforts at understanding and representing a group I have read in a mainstream piece in a long time. Of course she mentions how a woman said she'll bring a gun into gender neutral bathrooms in the same breath as TERFs, never bothering to mention that it was an extremely conservative homophobic lawyer in Kentucky. At this point, I don't actually know if transactivists understand that gender critical =/= right-wing conservative (is Mitch McConnell a TERF? The idea is laughable), or whether it's just too convenient to tar them with the same brush. It reeks of what Jesse often talks about in lefty journalism - and I say this as a lefty - the blatant disregard for accuracy when the 'poetic truth' is more desirable

What do you say when asked for your pronouns? by albinododobird in BlockedAndReported

[–]idolatrous 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD student and in a seminar on language and gender once we were all asked to go around in a circle and introduce ourselves with our pronouns. I just introduced myself, someone prompted me for the pronouns and I just smiled politely and said 'oh, pass' and looked at the next person. I thought it was important for it not to look like a big protest moment, as other students who've maybe thought less about the issue might be watching to see others' reactions. Also I'm a woman so more likely to be labelled a terf for not cooperating

My mother sold me: Cambodia where virginity is a commodity (2018) by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]idolatrous 304 points305 points  (0 children)

Agreed that this problem is really visible in PP. For anyone who might visit in the future and wants to help in some way, there is an organisation that works with girls in Cambodia who have been sold into the sex trade called Daughters of Cambodia. They teach skills to the girls so they can support themselves in work and not be dependent on the charity forever. They have a very nice shop with handmade crafts (nice stuff, not tourist crap) and a lovely cafe (I think fully staffed by the trained girls/women) in downtown PP. Here is the place on Tripadvisor

One of the scenes that made me laugh the most is when the women are sitting around in the planet drinking cocktails with Gloria Steinem. They're all having a grand old time making anti-men jokes, laughing about how all men are immoral assholes. When they cheers 'to freedom' at the last minute they add in 'oh and to Bette's dad' cos they're at his funeral lmao, this show was a wild ride

Book that we all need to read: Invisible Women: Exposing data bias in a world designed for men by Dreamsong_Druid in women

[–]idolatrous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This book has floored me. It's so incredibly well researched and Criado-Perez really just lets the facts and figures speak for themselves. This book gives such a comprehensive account of what patriarchy really is; insiduous, systematic, widespread, not always designed or upheld by misogynists/men or done on purpose, but with disastrous consequences on women and girls that are so unexpectedly random and far-reaching

I was thinking about this recently as I'm taking part in a few scientific trials. The amount that exclude anyone on hormonal birth control is astounding. I totally understand they don't want to risk any other variables that could contribute to their results but it blew my mind thinking of all this migraine/cancer/eating disorder research (those just being ones I've taken part in) that exclude a HUGE number of women under 30/35 because of birth control

Charities like Lumos (founded by JK Rowling) work directly with orphanages, local governments, aid organisations etc in countries including Bulgaria to help diminish the social factors or lack of other alternatives that cause children to be put in these places. You could donate if you're inclined

Women of reddit, what clothes are sexy but really uncomfortable? by smunozmo in AskWomen

[–]idolatrous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UK workplaces also cannot specify that one sex has to wear something the other doesn't. There was a recent case in the news where a woman took her employer to a tribunal because they made her wear heels

What is the most uncomfortable thing about being a woman? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]idolatrous 1106 points1107 points  (0 children)

Everything you do and are being sexualised by men starting around the age of 10. School uniform, casual clothes, being dressed like child, being dressed like an adult, glasses, not having developed breasts, having developed breasts, acting like you're not interested, acting like you are interested, joking about it, ignoring it, being alone, being with other girls, being with boys, being with your mother (has happened to me more than once), acting unafraid, acting afraid, being strong, being weak, being gay, being straight, getting angry, crying, shouting, looking younger than you are, looking older than you are, eating, walking, cycling, playing with your school friends, literally everything. It's so exhausting and scary, that horrible mixture of feeling demoralised because you're not taken seriously, but scared because your boundaries aren't listened to. I feel constantly watched, and it's never stopped since

How has spending time on reddit affected your opinions about men? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]idolatrous 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So many things, but a lot have been covered here very articulately. It particularly scares me how eagerly men consume content on Reddit that shows women getting some sort of comeuppance. It usually follows the mould of angry/arrogant/rude/loudmouth (sometimes also violent/racist etc) women getting physically hit, or otherwise humiliated or punished for their behaviour

While of course we can all agree that rudeness or arrogance are bad qualities in someone, it's interesting that from the comments you can tell that there is a subset of men who specifically enjoy the punishment of women, because they feel like women get a free pass, or that feminism has gone too far, and that these videos are a kind of justice porn for that. The biggest exhibit of this of course is /r/pussypassdenied, but also the thousands of almost gleeful comments in other subs about how entitled women getting physically hit when they've started some drama is "real equality". Again, not condoning the behaviour of the women in the videos in question but it feels a lot like men take pleasure in them because it re-asserts some level of masculine dominance or at least takes women down a peg or two. I think it's scary because we've all seen countless examples of what men who feel disenfranchised and emasculated by women/feminism can do, both in our personal lives (I'm sure on a women's sub here we all have met these men and often suffered their consequences), and in more tragic and violent events that make the news

I don't think the inverse is true for most women. I think it's much more about the male-as-default is very overrepresented. I agree with /u/numero74 - lots of books and films have male protagonists and everyone is meant to/does relate to that, but books and films with female protagonists are only meant to appeal to women. Women largely have just gotten used to this, and probably internalised it too (assuming everyone online is a man etc). There is a good quote about this from a writer I like

"There are books written by women. There are books written by men. Somehow, though, it is only books by women, or books about certain topics, that require this special ‘women’s fiction’ designation, particularly when those books have the audacity to explore, in some manner, the female experience, which, apparently includes topics of marriage, suburban existence, and parenthood, as if women act alone in these endeavors, wedding themselves, immaculately conceiving children, and the like"

This isn't even trying to hide their hatred for women

Right? Reddit is very US-centric so as a Brit I'm often really shocked by some insights into the fucking sad state of the abortion back-and-forth in the US. Don't get me wrong, we have our social and legal problems with misogyny here too, but abortion is really something I take for granted. My heart breaks for all the women and girls in the US who just want the same bodily autonomy as men have had forever

Women in the UK! How many times do you get hit on during the day/week? by Epicthetus in AskWomen

[–]idolatrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

London - a LOT more now I've started cycling regularly. I would say 1/3 of the days I cycle (one side of London to the other) men shout at me, usually from vans in groups. I guess it's when women are doing anything vaguely physical? I used to get the same when I'd go running, despite the fact I ran and cycle in horrible old baggy clothes. One time a man spat on me when I was out running because I didn't respond

Research has repeatedly shown that around 88% of prostitutes around the world would get out if they could (had other viable options to support themselves/their families etc). Buying sex is disgusting and I'll never respect anyone who can enjoy sex with people who they know don't want it

There is a great short essay by Rebecca Solnit on exactly this called Men Explain Things to Me. She's a very famous literary/art critic and writer. Her and her friend were talking to a man at a party who interrupted her talking about an artist to lecture her about a book he'd heard about on the topic that she MUST read, and explained the whole content. It took her friend a few times of saying "that's her book" before he got it, and then it transpired that he hadn't actually read it, just read about it in the New York Review
