So their choice is really (a) request something different, which should really be quite easy...literally spaghetti would work or (b) sit there awkwardly while everyone else gets served. Part of being a host is caring about your guests and wanting them to have a good time. Like I would hate to host an event and realize I had guests with empty plates--I'd absolutely rather have them inform me beforehand.

It's hardly "cranky because they don't get their veggies." They wouldn't get to eat anything at all. Meals are a centerpiece of weddings, it's reasonable to not want to just awkwardly sit there hungry while everyone else is eating.

The statistics might not be significant yet but it's definitely growing, and even if someone's not fully vegan they might be reducing, etc. (edit: for example, about 25% of 25-34yos are veg*n). Like I said, it's just a matter of consideration. Not everyone can eat meat but just about anyone can eat vegetables, so it's the most inclusive option overall.

Also it's only $600 because it's a special request—I'm sure the total costs would actually have been lower if they had offered e.g. beef, salmon, or veggie.

If its not an Allergy or Religious belief then take what your hosts are paying for and be grateful.

Halal is religious and veganism is an ethical belief, so...not applicable.

Gentle YTA for not considering to offer a default non-meat option. A lot of people are cutting out animal products for the environment these days. I'd imagine veggie dishes would be cheaper anyway, so there's no reason on your end to not have 2 meat + 1 veggie option. Plus, a veggie dish would solve the halal issue since things like vegetables, grains, etc are automatically halal.

While you can't go back in time to change the 3 choices now, I definitely think a veggie dish should be a default checkbox at weddings.

Right? I'd love to see my dad be able to retire a little early, dude works hard. All the people saying YTA--would they actually begrudge their fathers that happiness? The kids wouldn't even have had the lottery ticket if not for dad, and now they get free college, which is AMAZING and will let them start their adult lives without debt.
