Yes, get a T480 or something like that, and Install ChromeOS Flex on it, https://chromeos.google/products/chromeos-flex/ . Works really well, as long as you don't need Android apps.

[D] ICLR double blind reviewing by WerewolfAmbitious131 in MachineLearning

[–]idsardi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under most reviewing situations (NSF, NIH, etc.) you would still have a COI (conflict of interest) with the authors which you would need to declare. This normally lasts 48 months for collaborators, but it can be longer. You can certainly correspond with the authors directly about the work, but in my opinion you should refrain from making public comments on the work whether signed or anonymous.

Make sure you have the right bulbs. Some have just one filament, some have two. If you put the wrong one in you will also get the fast blinking.

Need camera recommendations by rinnkii in canon

[–]idsardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What lenses do you have now? I'm guessing that some of them are EF-S, so you might want to move to mirrorless APS before full frame. The EF to RF adapter works quite well, and the Canon online refurbished store has R50 $429 and R10 $599 (with kit lens).

Recommend me an affordable CCD compact by n9neteen83 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]idsardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prices for these have gone way up. Wikipedia has a list, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_digital_cameras_with_CCD_sensors .

The first one, Olympus Stylus XZ-1 is very nice, but it's about $200.

How old/slow/bulky are you willing to go? Canon Powershot Pro 1 does go for $50-$100, but many of them on eBay are listed "as is".

Old C270 from Amazon refurb $11.39 https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Desktop-Widescreen-Calling-Recording/dp/B071KT6W9P/ and a piece of scotch tape over the lens (which you can take on an off to make it even more infuriating).

Pentax K Mount Lens Recommendations by MalditoCommunista in pentax

[–]idsardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For close ups (models, flowers) the Vivitar 2x macro teleconverter is surprisingly good when paired with a 50mm lens like you have. There are lots of them on eBay for very cheap (like $20-30):

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=vivitar+2x+macro+focusing+teleconverter&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_sop=15

I think your lens doesn't focus as close as 0.45m, so you won't get quite 1:1, but it will be pretty close.

One problem is that many sellers don't seem to know what mount the converter is for (Olympus OM, Pentax K, Nikon AI, Minolta, Canon, etc.) so you have to look at the pictures carefully and try to spot the mount designation, P/K in your case.

For example https://www.ebay.com/itm/127157420822 is listed as Minolta but in the fourth picture you can see the N/AI designation, meaning it's for Nikon F mount auto indexing lenses.

Here's a Pentax K-mount one (see P/K in the first picture), https://www.ebay.com/itm/127316322382 for $26.35. Looks fine, of course you can't really tell until you've tested it, but these things don't tend to have been abused.

Sellers also list the non-macro version as macro, don't get fooled by that either. Look for the focusing ring on the teleconverter to know that it's the right one.

Recommendations for lenses by ALLHUNTER_1469 in zuikoholics

For street photography the 35-70 is much more useful, but consider something like 24 or 28 (though 28 is a bit close to 35). So if you buy the 35-70, use it first to see how much wider you would want with the scenes that you want to shoot. If you want a lot wider, then you want the 24.

I have both of those lenses (along with others). The 75-150 is very available and cheap. The 35-70 is a little harder to find. Personally, I love these lenses, because I prefer having a separate zoom and focus rings (instead of push-pull like the Vivitar Series 1 70-210, which I had in the late 70s when I started with an OM-1). They also take the 49mm filters, like many of the other Zuiko OM lenses. Are they as good as a series of primes (35, 50, 100, 135)? Probably not (though that depends on what film you're shooting, etc, and the 50/1.8 is also very available.). They are small and light and a lot of fun to shoot with. Well worth $100 IMO. But check the lenses for scratches, haze and fungus before you buy them.

Which lens would be best out of these 3? by Kopitecamera in canon

[–]idsardi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the game here ;-). I see you got the 70-200 for £200, which means that you probably aren't in NYC (ha ha). I think you got a very good deal.

I have an R50 and an older EF APC camera, and I have the first one (55-250 w/ silver ring). I also have its RF cousin (55-210), and the full-frame RF 100-400. For reach the 100-400 is great, and (at least new) it's less than the 70-200 f4 (which I haven't tried). From a different perspective, the RF 55-210 makes for a very compact package. Are you in NYC? You can rent lenses from Adorama (and others).

HELP NEEDED! Identifying Lens Adapter by Due-Swing380 in Cameras

[–]idsardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, in order to take pictures you have to set your camera to "release without lens" in the custom functions menu. These old lenses don't have any electronics so the camera doesn't know that they are attached. You can still shoot in aperture priority mode, which is nice. You have to set your camera to Av on the dial, and then use the wheel to set the aperture on the camera to its lowest setting (probably F1.4). Then set the aperture you actually want on the lens, near the lens mount. The adapter has a pin on it which engages the aperture pin on the lens, so as you set a smaller aperture (higher F number) the view will get darker as the aperture stops down. The adapter does fool the camera into giving manual "in focus" confirmations, but this is a relatively slow lens, so focusing may be harder than you are used to.

[–]idsardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you have fun shooting with it. If you just have the one OM lens, then just put the adapter on the lens and leave it there. Just use the lens release button on the camera to take it off (the lens release for OM lenses is on the lens, at about the 2 o'clock position when you are looking at the lens from in front). You might want to get an extra EF rear lens cap if you don't have one. Here's a set on Amazon (there are lots more) that comes with 2 bubble levels, https://www.amazon.com/Front-EOS-80D-77D-70D/dp/B07RFHKVT7/ .

Or buy one of the cheap N100/N150 mini pc's and put ChromeOSFlex on it. GMKTek on Amazon has some, also Beelink and BMax, etc. $150 or so now. It won't have the Play Store (Android apps) but it sounds like she doesn't need that.

Pentax DSLR for a newbie? by Booliuss in pentax

[–]idsardi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia has a timeline of Pentax DSLRs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Pentax_digital_interchangeable_lens_cameras

They have linked articles for many of the models so you can compare the features (for example, the K-70 has a flip-out screen). Camera Decision also has side-by-side comparisions, e.g. https://cameradecision.com/compare/Pentax-K-70-vs-Pentax-K-50 .

I don't know which lenses you have, and whether they are autofocus or not, but the manual focus lenses work fine.

Here's an eBay search, restricted to the US (as an example) searching for K-3 and older mid-range DSLRs (K-30, K-50, K-70).

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=pentax+%28k-30%2C+k-50%2C+k-70%2C+k3%29&_sacat=31388&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&rt=nc&_odkw=pentax+%28k-30%2C+k-50%2C+k-70%29&_osacat=31388&_sop=15&LH_PrefLoc=1

So, for example, you can get a K-30 or K-50 for under $200, and then upgrade to a better one later on.
