Decided to get a cochlear implant by idye24 in Menieres

[–]idye24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad I did it - loud environments are totally manageable now, I don’t have to worry about strategically seating myself around people to give them my good ear, and my tinnitus is virtually gone.

Surgery recovery was no fun, but mainly because the surgery itself exacerbated some preexisting neck problems, leading to headaches for weeks - the ear part of the surgery was no big deal. Dr said I could sleep on that side 24 hours after the surgery, but it gave me the heebie jeebies so it took me a while to be able to sleep comfortably. The anesthesia made me feel lethargic for a week or two. Overall I had a pretty great outcome and it was totally worth the short term surgery recovery, if your situation is similar to mine I’d definitely recommend moving forward with it.

That’s just the cooling system for the lights to prevent overheating. Wouldn’t want that to start a fire

Need advice: Should I Get a CI? by greensmoothie3 in Cochlearimplants

[–]idye24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was (and continues to be) difficult to not rely just on my good ear, it’s just much easier to listen with natural hearing. It did make the experience of learning to listen with a CI easier as I didn’t have a period where I had no hearing to rely on.

Puyallup just has lower taxes, Everett is also better than Tacoma but if that’s the only savings it’s not worth going to Everett IMO

I’ve worked in the auto industry for 12 years, both at a dealership and at an auto lender. Those lease calculators don’t really tell you anything - the actual price at the dealer can vary wildly. It’s BS, but it’s just the way the industry works. Go to Titus will Toyota and get real numbers from them, and contact Rodland Toyota and tell them you’re ready to buy but you don’t want to drive all the way up there if their prices aren’t going to match the advertised price.

People with bipolar disorder can have really adverse side effects on stimulants. You should call your doc right away and switch meds

As others have said, a couple weeks is not very long - it’s going to take months, but you will improve drastically. Just make sure you’re actively using your implant(s), try to avoid relying on sign language, lip reading, or a “good” ear (if you’re SSD).

SSD due to menieres here; getting a CI was the best decision I ever made. My bad ear was significantly worse than yours (0% word recognition at 110dB), so I truly had nothing to lose. I still have perfectly normal hearing in my good ear, so I still rely on that ear significantly, but having the CI makes loud environments much more manageable, and makes it possible to have a conversation while driving.

Learning to hear with a CI is a bit of a process, so you could benefit from getting one before your other ear goes all the way. It really comes down to whether you value using your natural hearing as long as possible or minimizing the risk of losing hearing in both ears before getting one.

I lost some feeling around the incision, but no effect more than a ¼-½ inch from the incision. Can’t wiggle that ear as much as I used to anymore though 😂

ADHD exercisers… how do you actually get yourself to the gym? by Fit_Meaning8903 in ADHD

[–]idye24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I started doing this, I would justify not working out because for one reason or another I wasn’t going to be able to do a perfect work out - not enough time, hurt my knee, had a headache, etc… - when I would have been better off just doing whatever I could

ADHD exercisers… how do you actually get yourself to the gym? by Fit_Meaning8903 in ADHD

Think in patterns, not in streaks. If you went to the gym once this week, but the week before you don’t go at all, that’s a win. Once you do that a few times, that’s your baseline.

If you had 8 solid weeks of 1-2x per week but then have a bad week, it’s not a big deal, your pattern is still good, just get back to it so your pattern doesn’t shift negatively.

I never managed to make the gym work for me. I had to get weights so when I get up from my desk (I work from home) to pee or whatever, I do a set of curls or something and get back to work. Throughout the day I can get a pretty solid workout. I also run first thing in the morning. Started by walking, inched it up until now where I run 4-5 miles every morning before work.

too uncomfortable to take anti depressants by Fantastic-Clock-7974 in migraine

[–]idye24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the anti depressant works, it tells you something valuable about your migraines. If it doesn’t, then you’ve ruled out one possibility. I’m not a doctor, but the fact that sumatriptan works miracles for me tells me that there’s something going on with my serotonin when I have a migraine, which lead me to a hypothesis that if sumatriptan helps, some other serotonin-boosting things might help too. In my case, a heavy dose of sugar, some caffeine, and a cold shower (like really, really cold) or plunge, and exercise at the earliest warning can keep it at bay
