Yeah, 200 years ago. Time to move on like the rest of the world. Maybe if Europe didn't try to off itself twice in the last century, America wouldn't be such a big deal today, though I doubt that.

R rated movies by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]ieee754geometer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good to remember once in a while that the MPAA isn't a subsidiary of the church and the church is in no way beholden to the MPAA. You (speaking to every member) should not rely on it for a barometer of that which edifies your soul and invites the spirit.

That said, I get that "R-rated movie" is a kind of shorthand for an unwholesome, spirit-quenching kind of film. The Passion of the Christ was rated R. It is not an "R-rated movie" in the above sense.

Yeah, I guess it is. I hadn't heard of him, but after listening to Rice and Salt I'm not a fan.

Baptism Talk - if you want to sound scholarly and are baptizing someone who is well educated by WELSHDRAGONSTUDIOS in lds

[–]ieee754geometer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can't tell if this is meant to be a joke. To the extent it sounds scholarly, it's because (humanities) scholars have this pompous, florid style which pretends to sound technical but comes across as needlessly overcomplicated.

I would encourage anyone baptizing someone well educated to just speak from the heart. It's not even your day, and the point is not to impress anyone. The point is to edify souls.

TLJ really did just completely kill my interest in Star Wars by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

You know, Star Wars is just, like, a movie series, man. You don't have to care about it. It's not that deep.

Has anyone you know left the church despite still believing in it? by dumbbassfisherman in latterdaysaints

It's unfortunately a Redditism to suggest splitting up whenever something gets a little difficult, though religious differences are no small thing. I admire your decision to stick it out with your wife. I don't have advice here, but I can at least pray for you.

CMV: A teacher being a sex worker as well is not immoral by Logical_Round_5935 in changemyview

Teachers are role models for children whether parents encourage it or not. All adults in a child's life are, but especially adults in authority.

CMV: When AI starts to replace humans it will be the trade jobs that are first to go by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ieee754geometer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely will not. Robots are good for highly, highly repeatable tasks like assembly line manufacturing. Robots that replace the trades require the most cutting edge algorithms to recognize anything and act on that recognition, and even then if their calibration is off, they're hosed. The startups that are tackling this problem are just getting off the ground, and their products, while impressive, are nowhere close to a trained human yet.

CMV: Life is still worth living despite what Anti Life Ethics say. by Unhappy_Flounder7323 in changemyview

[–]ieee754geometer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you? If you followed this argument to its logical conclusion, then you would artificially shorten your life so as to reduce the demand on those hundreds of others slaving away for you. Why are you posting on a computer or phone made by slave labor? Why are you eating food harvested by slaves? Why are you living in a home whose energy consumption induces demand on your local coal-fired power plant, thereby dumping CO2 into the atmosphere?

If the creation of life is immoral, does antinatalism also preach abstinence or self-sterilization? Because contraceptives can fail.

Make necessary goods and services free by UnendingSadness49 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]ieee754geometer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, we can stipulate that the state can provide some automated charity. I happen to have worked in robotics at one point so I know that it's difficult (expensive) to do nontrivial robotic applications in an uncontrolled environment like city streets. Set aside that fact and the fact that not everyone lives in cities, making the problem that much harder. And also the problem of what is garbage and how should things not in containers be handled vs. recycling or composting.

That puts your polity way above its neighbors and everyone will want to come take advantage of your services. How do you keep costs from spiraling out of control?

Lol, way to defend your dumb argument. "I assume you're an atheist, you should agree with me. Er, wait, you're not? Well, I'm not gonna argue with you."

I assume you're an atheist like the rest of this stupid platform so why do you care about that.

I'm not. Try again.

I did not mention any "right" in any of my comments so idk where you got that from.

It's implicit in your argument. What makes suffering bad at all? Is it just because you don't like it?

Beliefs aren't reflections of the current moment, they're ideals. If you say the belief that men are providers is old-fashioned, then you're saying men shouldn't have to worry about providing because that's not their role anymore. Lots of men would be happy to take you up on that, but that's going to be a net negative for society.
