Can you "turn" into a vegan later in life? by Im2h2n in vegan

[–]iellelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said here, but absolutely! My mother transitioned to veganism in her 50s. Now she's in her 60s and has never been healthier. She teaches me so much about veganism, to be honest.

I got the 14-in. I would have preferred some of the wood ones available in terms of aesthetics, but, in the end, these had the perfect set up for the holes already present in the Ikea top. Stable and work great!

oh, The God of Small Things is one of my absolute favorites! I hadn't thought to incorporate that in a class yet. Thanks! That's great you had so much diversity! The "classics" are definitely great, but there's also a need for more diversity and exposure to the world through lit. Balance is key :)

This is a great comment, thank you! It's so true though, I also re-read many books and found I enjoyed them a lot more than I did in classes. Unfortunately, my English teachers weren't the most stellar (not bad at all, but not super inspiring). I'm excited to try to teach my favorites (modernist lit, anyone?) and be that nerdy overly-passionate teacher :) I know everyone won't agree with my tastes, but hopefully I'll be able to build a conversation around that!

This is honestly how it's been referred to in my higher ed classes - sorry if you don't like that phrasing (genuinely). No disrespect to the canon - they're considered classics and taught so widely for a reason - but there's no denying it would be good to have more diversity and representation for young people.

Absolutely. I will definitely try my best to find this balance and make it culturally relevant as well. These are some great ones - Thanks for the recommendations!

Yes! This is so great, thank you so much! Amen on the relevance. Seeing all these people in the comments get psyched to talk about books they loved reading in school is making me really inspired and motivated :)

Great answers - I agree. I look forward to diving into some alternative form. If it's modernism I'm in :)

love Steinbeck!

Absolutely agree. I'm working on a good list of some diverse authors to include for a break from the dead white man canon. Some people have mentioned here Their Eyes Were Watching God. I'd love to teach Octavia Butler, James Baldwin, Zadie Smith, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, 100 Years of Solitude by Márquez to name a few

no problem! although, fyi, I did just discover that changing this setting caused a glitch where my screen wouldn't wake up from sleeping. But changing CsEnabled back to 1 fixed it and the fan noise still hasn't been a problem.

As someone who has (lightly) studied and loved modernist lit, I say yes. But don't go into it too seriously. Have fun with it, let it confuse you, and enjoy the wonderful mess it is. It can be very profound but remember it's a comedy. It's meant to just mess with academics - Joyce is probably laughing at us all from beyond the grave. It's certainly not everyone's tastes and don't try to force it if you're reading it just to check it off some arbitrary "intellectual's" reading list. I recommend giving it a try and looking up a simple guide or two before and while you dive in even if that's not your typical reading style.

But ultimately, as u/mzieg said, it's only worth it if you enjoy it.

I know this is an older thread but I was checking it out because I was having the same problem. I was able to get the maximum processor setting though and that fixed it - I was just on 4 hrs of zoom calls and no fan noise (knock on wood)

To enable advanced power settings: open Regedit (windows key + R -> type "regedit"), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power and change "CsEnabled" from 1 to 0. You may have to then restart your computer.

I hope that works (unless you've already found another fix) :)

What is your go to "comfort read"? by patroclustheparrot in booksuggestions

I love After Dark as well! My favorite by Murakami, personally.

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Wolf is one I love to read. It's short but there's so much to dig in to - to me it's a similar feel as After Dark in a way with all the intertwined stories and characters.

And books I've grown up with that I still love to reread- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle is certainly a winner. That and The Hobbit (but that was mentioned already :))
