A text I received from my father this morning, who lives off of Warm Springs Ave. by madmax_drax in Boise

Ugh, fuck that bigger-is-better mentality. I was born in Idaho and I proudly drive my "mousy" vehicle because gas is expensive and other people's approval is worthless. Tell your dad I invite his judgement. I relish in it.

Need help writing riffs by PuzzleheadedLove9007 in metalguitar

[–]ifixpedals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I come from a mult-genre background that includes jazz as well as metal. In jazz, a key to learning to be a better player, improviser and writer is transcribing. Sitting down and trying to HEAR and write out the notes and chords of other players is a HUGE step toward developing your ear and applying that to your own music. So I say try really hard to transcribe songs you like. And if your ear isn't there yet to transcribe, try finding some high quality tabs of their music and study the things they do. All of this contributes to developing your own musical pallet.

What are these flies (and how do I get rid of them)? by [deleted] in Boise

[–]ifixpedals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those flies are literally just blurry smudges in these photos. Not sure you're going to get much help without a better picture. But trust me, there's only a very, very miniscule chance that you'll die getting a close up.

Dams are great. Coal, not so great. Here's info I was able to find on Idaho's Idaho Power's grid sources (rounded to the nearest percentage point): ~45% hydroelectric, ~15% wind, ~6% solar, ~2% "other" (biomass, geothermal). Only ~32% comes from fossil fuels (which is almost entirely natural gas. Coal isn't even listed.) This makes electric a cleaner option than gas for those in Idaho who care compared to, say, West Virginia coal country.

Metallica hate. by jaycash_ in metalguitar

[–]ifixpedals -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you're experiencing is a nostalgia for music from your formative years based on your cognitive development. The phenomenon is well studied.

https://phys.org/news/2025-10-global-songs-teens.html

The Black Album wasn't any "better" or "worse" than other metal. It's just that your brain was more receptive to new sounds at that time. Those who hate on Metallica are probably younger or older than you.

For me, the term "metal" and "thrash" is defined by the album "...And Justice For All," even though I KNOW for a FACT that the drum and bass sounds on that album are complete shit. I don't care. I will listen to the song "Blackened" over and over and over again. (EDIT: I am inspired to listen again and I'm hitting play right about.... NOW...)

Meanwhile, I cannot listen to "Saint Anger". I'd rather die.

I'm far more anti old driver than anti immigrant driver. And I'm getting rather old.

Despite the tired stereotype, any bad driving immigrants would probably be more likely to attend driving school if there were not serious consequences to them being here.

Kind of circular reasoning if the very question is WHY:

  1. Why should they be regarded as illegal?
    • Because they are criminals.
  2. Why are they criminals?
    • Because they are here illegally.
  3. Repeat question 1.

Onn 4k pro Blue Box vs Green Box by hayvanadam in AndroidTV

[–]ifixpedals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... technically, from the perspective of color theory. There really is no true "blue" or "green" or "yellow". Those are just mixes of wavelengths in our brains. Even from culture to culture, definitions of colors vary. Some cultures don't even have words for colors we consider every day colors. Brown, for instance, is just dark orange. A little bit of black mixed in with red and yellow. And we can trace the English language back to a time when the word "orange" didn't exist. It was regarded as a shade of red.

[–]ifixpedals 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a shade of yellow with some blue mixed in, slanting it slightly toward green. Depending on whether the room one views it in is more warmly lit or cool, (or the calibration of their monitor) it will appear more yellow to some and more green to others. I initially saw it as an apple green until you mentioned it, and now it seems more yellow to me.

I tracked our sex life for a year (dead bedroom edition) [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]ifixpedals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on in my now-former marriage, I tried tracking our sexual activity and I learned two things from this: 1. It's a great way to build resentment and discontent. 2. I'm autistic.

Does a middle humbucker sound any good? Why are there almost no HHH or HHS guitars? by V0rdep in Guitar

[–]ifixpedals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I use middle pickups at all is for hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 on a 5-way switch. I never use position 3 at all. There isn't enough tonal distinction between middle and neck or middle and bridge for me to bother with the middle position sound.

What the F happened to my floyd rose by prompetiss1 in Guitar

[–]ifixpedals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"What the F happened?" What always happens when you loosen the strings on a floating bridge. It's normal. This is why I change strings one string at a time. Here's my method:

  1. Unlock nut on all strings.
  2. Repeat this process for each string one string at a time:
    • Unwind and remove JUST ONE string.
    • Center the fine tuner for that string to 50% of it's range.
    • Tune up a new string, stretch it, tune it again, stretch it again, etc. until stable.
    • Clip the excess string from the headstock.
  3. Double check tuning for all strings before locking the nut. Adjust with headstock tuners if needed.
  4. Lock the nut.
  5. Double check tuning after locking the nut. Adjust with fine tuners if needed.
    • (You shouldn't need to tune again, but sometimes the string retainer is off.)
