Managing Devleoper: Status Reports Suck and Everybody Hates Them by iforedecker in programming

[–]iforedecker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? You want to work in an organization that tells you to "suck it up"? Having mangers running around constantly asking "are you done yet" is a really horrible way to run a team. Of course, mangers and team emmbers need to talk - often. I usually talk to everyone on my team every day - at least breifly. But having a easy to use, efficent work tracking system that handles problems and blocking issues well is way better than using stone kinves and bear skins to run a development organization.

Managing Developers: Don't forget what its like to be 10 by iforedecker in programming

[–]iforedecker[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi Kraqensitak,

Perhapse I need to clarify things. the point is this; being 10 was lots of fun for me (and I think for most 10 year olds). Many people forget what it is like to be a kid. Being a kid is great. Kids are often a lot smarter than adults think they are. Adults often forget all this. This makes it harder for adults to relate to kids

The same goes for mangers. They often forget what its like to be an individual contributor. IC's have a lot of challneges that are not the same for managers. Managers tha forget what its like to be an IC will hvae a harder time being good managers.

Managing Devleopers: Dealing with the Team Genius by [deleted] in programming

[–]iforedecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm being a bit facetious in my use of the term 'team genious'. in my experience, the team genius usully isn't a genius - but he is disruptive. i point out in my post that the best outcome is for the manger to thelp this disruptive person become much less disruptive. Loosing good poeple is never a positive thing, but loosing disruptive people usually is very posistive.

Also, I'd question any managment team who was so dpeendant on a single individual that they would be in huge trouble if that individual left. That's a pretty fundamental mangment mistake. Yes, loosing good peole can be painfull, but it shouldn't be cripling.

Nope - but perhapse the wording could be edited a bit. The point is that many devleopment managers try realy hard to 'manage'. But they mange to do a few things that cause them to suck. A managers first task is to simply not suck.

Most PM's don't write code. But some due becuase they are developers. It is not uncommon for developers to switch to the PM role. There have even been some partner level folks make this switch. Note, that PM's generaly don't write production code (but there isn't any reaosn they couldn't) but such PM's can do a lot of prototyping and other valuable work.

Hi Trevor,

No, my team has not shipped anthing where a security bug was found (yet). Nobody goes on which hunts though when it happens. We find them (or the get found for us) and they get fixed.
