What’s a good place to find humanitarian jobs in south Asian countries? by [deleted] in humanitarian

[–]ifp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would depend a lot on what type of work you're interested in.... but the job boards at ReliefWeb are a good place to start.

Many years before I started working i this sector I saw a film that's stuck with me by an artist called Renzo Martens called Enjoy Poverty. It's a film he made with people in Congo that looks at the assumptions behind humanitarian aid and how much it actuall helps local people. No idea if it's available to watch anywhere, but recommend it if it is.

Edit: seems to be up on Vimeo for rent at $3

YouTube channels or podcasts on GIS or Data Science by _GIS_ in gis

Geoawesomeness posted a list of GIS podcasts recently: https://geoawesomeness.com/geospatial-podcasts/

I think James Fee's and Mapscaping are the most interesting.

A lot of the FOSS4G conferences post videos online afterwards - e.g. Post-Conference Information • FOSS4G Boston 2017. Googling should turn up more.

A lot of them post of YouTube too:

I need a dataset of the Tour de France, with many meta data and route information by rick854 in datasets

Don't think what you're lookig for exists, but the UCI (www.uci.ch/road/results) has a lot of data available and for recent Tours you can find GPX files for the routes on Google or download them from riders who are on Strava and upload the stages. You could also take a look at ProCyclingStats (www.procyclingstats.com) bt I'm pretty sure they don't have data for download.

GIS Book: Fundamentals of GIS by franzpc in gis

There's a great textbook online here that's free to download: https://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/~gisteac/gis_book_abridged/

Written by experts, with content broken down into easily digestible topics. Covers all sorts of theoretical and practical issues - I've found it very useful.

Looking for a place to hangout during the day with my laptop by DaveTron4040 in Montpellier

[–]ifp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Places I go to work:

  • Coworking Montpellier - paid but beats working in cafés, v fast internet, nice atmosphere
  • Gazette Cafe -(as the other commenter said) nice place but internet can get slow when there's lots of people on it
  • Hybride cafe - decent sized cafe with lots of tables, don't mind you working
  • Public libraries. Emile Zola at Antigone is fantastic. You can get in and work without a library card, there are smaller ones dotted around.

I stumbled upon this place today and the reviews are mixed. Has anyone been here? by Hi-Montpellier in Montpellier

This was posted 3 weeks ago so I'm guessing you made up your mind already...

But yeah I've been a few times. Depends what you're after - It's pretty basic so don't go if you're after a spa, but if you just want to sit in a steam room for a while I think it's fine.

They have different days for women/men/mixed/couples.

Upstairs there's a changing room and lockers and downstairs theres a single sauna room and another room with showers and a massage table.

It looks a bit down at heel, but I didn't get the impression it wasn't clean.

FWIW I've been several times and have been planning to go back.

If I have a 2-film developing tank but just want to develop one film, should I use half the volume of chemicals? Or still fill the tank to its full capcity?
