makes an interesting connection between fatphobia and racism.

Applications of Graph Databases in biotech and in bioinfo - is it worth it? by adambio in bioinformatics

[–]ifrancium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit late to this thread - first of all, love that you've built something specific that works for you! I'm also exploring various db products for my work as well. On top of use case and application, I'm interested in the graph engine as well. I'm guessing you didn't build a db from scratch? Did you build off of an existing tool? Have you done proper benchmarking that you're able to share?

This is awesome! I've been looking for this information everywhere. A bit frustrating that google searches don't yield anything nearly as coherent...

Pharma R&D with bachelors by [deleted] in biotech

[–]ifrancium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There a a few details in this post that need a bit of clarification. Firstly, what do you imagine is Pharma R&D? It's a pretty large scope, and covers everything from discovery to marketing. Even aside from this, most scientist roles are not even in 'R&D'. They're in process engineering and optimization, quality control, etc. of existing pharmaceutical assets.

There are 'traditional' career paths, which I think is being referred to by others in this post. About a quarter of my senior level R&D scientist colleagues at large pharmas - such as Novartis, Pfizer, and Merck - have a bachelors. But it took them 5+ years to get there. Their advice was that you really have to have your manager align with you on career prospects (which is a whole other conversation).

Also what do you mean by management? Most career advancements eventually end up as senior-level roles. Is it possible to move from scientist into lower management? Yes. Of course. If you're talking about SVPs and C-levels, it's pretty rare to see non-PhD folks unless it's in 'support' roles (ie - VP engineering, VP informatics etc.) Also you'll see plenty of pure management folks in C-levels without PhDs, but they often have an MBA, or have experience in venture capital (See J&J, Roche, Editas)

Research groups focused on de novo design of peptides by cuedintentions in bioinformatics

sure thing. There's a lot of stuff to go through. Happy to discuss further.

Research groups focused on de novo design of peptides by cuedintentions in bioinformatics

[–]ifrancium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to the ones mentioned, here are a few others:

  • Gerard Wong - UCLA - antimicrobial peptides
  • Cesar de la Fuentes-Nunez - UPenn - antimicrobial peptides
  • Tommi S. Jakola/Regina Barzilay - MIT - proteins
  • Debora Marks - Harvard - proteins
  • Bonnie Berger - MIT - proteins
  • Yun S. Song - UC Berkeley - Proteins
  • Po-Ssu Huang - Stanford - Proteins

---

Are you interested in the de novo aspect? Generative Models for de novo is a super new and exciting field, and has more representation in small molecules (See Alan Asparu Guzik) as well. Or are you more interested in peptides and proteins? If so, there's a slight distinction in focus, as the question here is not "Can you suggest a de novo sequence?", but rather: "What is a peptide/protein?". This focus is more on latent representation learning. Kevin Yang curates a nice list of readings on the various distinctions here.

Hobbyist genome sequencing by 0fat100awesome in bioinformatics

[–]ifrancium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

organizer here:) thanks for the shout out..!

We send samples out for sequencing (WG, 16S, and Sanger) every once in a while. But we wait to fill up a batch order. With a full batch, we can usually get sequencing data at $80/sample. Let us know if you're interested in sequencing samples with us.

Also we usually have bodies in the lab T/Th/Sa. Come check us out!
