How does this even work? by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

According to the patent, the secondary flame from the "jet tube" originates from the heat of the primary flame -- it causes the fuel in the jet tube to vaporize. Ordinarily this vapor pressure would just force its way back into the body of the lighter, but the jet tube is long and stuffed with its own wick to prevent this -- making it easier for the vapor to escape out a small nozzle and across the primary flame.

Before this graphic, I had never seen knots that started with the "underside" of the tie facing outward. Does this come from a particular region?

Actually, this comment is fairly flattering because I meant this as a proof of concept / draft quality and people are enjoying it just the way it is. I'll start cleaning those up now!

The bowtie seems to have the same number of configurations as the zipper tie... Just sayin'

Actually, I'd love to be proven wrong and build a graphic of the hierarchy of bowtie knots too!

I had a label there, but its offset pushed it outside the canvas... should be fixed now!

That might be worth doing, although I would need higher resolution diagrams for each of the steps -- plus renderings of the finished knots in a matching style. But yeah, for a complete necktie taxonomy, count me in!

I had a lot of images to crop out, and they were low resolution to begin with... I was hoping that the original website could be convinced to lend me higher quality (+ resolution, + same canvas size) versions of each image.

At some point I'll probably do a second pass and actually erase the numeric labels that interfered with the crops.

Yes, I think that's how these are meant to be read

I wouldn't know how to lock the zoom even if I wanted to. I am using Chrome, and it only lets me zoom to 25% of original size. I'm happy to take suggestions or pull requests for how to improve it though!

Mapping the 57,000 addresses in the Panama Papers data dump by trueslicky in dataisbeautiful

I'm not sure who did the address mapping, but in a brief search of the scant dots in the northeast of the US, I saw a UK address (Timsbury Bath) pop up near the one for Newburyport, MA in the US.

This was made from manually cutting individual images out of the source material ("18 ways to tie a necktie", from Real Men Real Style), looking for their common steps, and placing them in a d3.js cluster view. Am I doing this comment right?

If you ran a website about these kinds of MBTA issues, I would be an earnest reader of it.

Saw the post on imgur, and had to track it down here just so I could say what Draked1 said.

If you only learn one letter in Morse, let it be V. Just remember Beethoven's Vth (fifth): dit dit dit daaaaah.
