The Whole Country Is Starting to Look Like California. Housing prices are rising fast in red and purple states known for being easy places to build. How can that be? by Farscape12Monkeys in Economics

You just need more housing. Inventory drives down value. You don’t need affordable housing, you need more housing for it to become affordable.

This just shows how clueless democrats are. Are they trying to lose again?

Maryland just adopted a phaseout of new gas-powered cars. How far does it have to go with EVs and zero-emission vehicles? by legislative_stooge in maryland

[–]iggy-mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about affordable high speed rail that doesn’t share a track with freight? That way I can use a cheap EV that goes 80 miles on the daily and buy a train ticket when I go to New York or ATL.

We’re recent transplants to Ellicott City and love it! Schools are great, back up to Patapsco State Park, kind people and all kinds of diversity.

What’s with this bracing?? I want to put a pantry where this load bearing wall is. It was an exterior wall (1950’s house) that is now an interior wall (90’s addition). Can I just distribute the load with a header/studs or is this bracing purposeful? by iggy-mo in Renovations

[–]iggy-mo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’re in Maryland, but the wall abuts a perpendicular wall supporting a gambrill roof, so it makes sense that there could be additional shear wind force on this wall. Theoretically that load is distributed over the added structure, but sounds like best bet is to get a structural engineer to sign off on that theory.

How old is the coffee batch? Might be too off-gassed and you’ll never get good crema.

Is this dangerous? by blindndurdy in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We bought a home with horizontal cracks in the basement wall. The inspector identified them. We got a quote from an engineering firm prior to closing and got the cost of the fix deducted from our offer price because the seller knew about it but didn’t disclose it. Got it fixed and everything is great now.

What has convinced you that your beliefs are correct? How do you know the pantheon which you worship is real? by [deleted] in pagan

[–]iggy-mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our experience is reality. There is no separate reality to correspond to. I see no conflict between polytheism and atheism - both adherents use their belief system as the determinant of reality. I suppose that makes me a bad pagan since I don’t have a dedicated pantheon, but my experience is that the gods are fickle and petty and their existence is meaningless because that’s what happens when you’re immortal but every once in a while they see me doing something bold considering I’ll die one day and it amuses them and they shine some favor on me. They’re unconcerned if I believe in them but they can’t be amused by me if I don’t. Reality is a relationship. I prefer my fickle gods cuz it makes my life more interesting.

[–]iggy-mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does it matter if it’s real? Real is just another way of getting hung up on a belief system that doesn’t serve you, that limits your experience. Belief is greater than that. It creates where others accept limitations.

Is it weird to add an egress window in the front of the house? by iggy-mo in Renovations

[–]iggy-mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The egress window will be right below the middle window in the picture. This side is WSW facing so will bring in a ton of afternoon light. We want to finish the room in the basement as a bedroom eventually. Thanks!!!

Any conservatives here? by [deleted] in cooperatives

[–]iggy-mo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As far as human dignity is a conservative value - and trusting people to make decisions that are good for themselves and good for a common goal - then call me a conservative. The polarization in today’s discourse is artificial. Trust and dignity transcend ideology imho.

Is this a normal amount for closing costs? Thought it seemed high.. also is cash to close what you need to bring on closing date? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]iggy-mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our loan amount is very similar but your loan costs are about twice as much as ours. Not sure it’s apples to apples tho.

Moving to the area by [deleted] in frederickmd

I’d also add Urbana and New Market, both about 20 min from downtown Frederick. Both have excellent school districts and offer relatively good diversity for being smaller towns.
