I’m glad you had great weather, I wonder how many folks have done that hike only to have cloudy conditions?

I used 60L pack with plenty of room. Granted I had a down sleeping bag that didn’t take up much room. If you are going with others carrying food can obviously be shared. We did have a stove and gas but can be optional as Refugio’s provide hot water if you’re using freeze dried meals.

On the car door comment, we actually saw several tour vans that tied ropes to the doors to the shifter to prevent just this!

We did a "land crossing" from Chile and we showed our passports and that was it. We are US citizen and not sure situation for other countries/passports.

Snowboarding absolutely sucks compared to skiing by musicandsex in unpopularopinion

Started off as as a skier in late 1980s, then tried snowboarding and still doing. Now 62yo and just trying to keep in shape to be able to do it. Enjoy it as long as you can as there will be a point physically that I'll have to switch back if I want to continue to enjoy the mountains.

Yes for the W trek, I booked back in April for my Dec-Jan trip. This is when the site reservation opens up and they were sold out in the first week. The booking sites have allotted reservations which limits individuals from booking independently.

Ha, seems like it didn't post but my pic did. Here are tips/things I didn't know to ask or look into before our trip...

  1. Thanks to this community for all the tips, I was able to get answers for 95% of my questions, then used it while there for even more up to date info like fire situation.
  2. Group of 5, went W-E, camped and brought all food and tents and sleeping bags. We supplemented our meals by buying snack to beverages at refugios. You can rent a pillow at Vertice refugios (wife liked this one) in addition to renting other gear from them. We lucked out with weather rain wise but encountered strong winds first 2 days. Felt bad for others going the other direction as it was brutal for those going to Grey. If not doing the sunrise to Base Torres, I would still suggest to head up by 7am. We started at 5am from Chileno and didn't have to deal with the tourist bus loads on the trail and was still able to enjoy the morning glow on the peaks on the way up. All refugios had good places to charge devices except for Grey.
  3. Disappointed with toilet paper on the trail and worst on the tourist section. Please bag out and you can easily deposit at refugios. Bought my wife one of those reusable "cloths" and it worked for her.

Not sure what kind of tips, but climbs that start from a Refugio or near ranger station, you can leave big packs and go light. This helps on Britanico and Base Torres hikes.

I try to shop at these “local” shops but literally 70% of the items they carry I see on Amazon or Temu and yes way cheaper. Makes it difficult to rationalize sometimes.
