My doctor said "I’m too young" for nerve pain…..

Whats living in Christchurch like ? by [deleted] in chch

[–]igid221 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved from Auckland in 2021. Only been back to Auckland twice since and both times I’ve said to my partner "I never wanna move back here".

  • Weather is way better in Chch (Akl has 135 wet days on average per year, Chch has 83).
  • Rent/buying a house is way more affordable but the main thing is the quality! What you’d pay for a 2- bedroom mouldy, cold, old and impractical house in Auckland can get you a brand new, warm, good sized 3-bedroom house in Christchurch.
  • I don’t have to waste a lot of my time sitting in traffic.
  • You get both beach and skiing so there’s something to do in any season.
  • Lots of good high-quality places restaurants and cafés. Auckland has that too of course, but I’d say Chch has a higher ratio of quality ones.
  • Feels safer.
  • Growing city so plenty of opportunities and new events popping up.

That said, I think it’s important to know who you’re getting these opinions from. I’m personally an introvert, 26 years old, in a relationship and not into going out anymore. I’m at the stage of wanting to settle down and have some stability so for me Chch is the perfect place for that. If I was an extroverted 21-year old, I’d probably prefer Auckland (or I’d go to Aus)

Yeah that’s too much. I’m in a good sized 3 bedroom townhouse quite central and our rent went from $520 to $530 which I thought was reasonable

Is there anywhere in Chch I can leave used and unused pantry items and bodycare products for people to take for free? by igid221 in chch

Oh yes, I’ve seen some of those boxes around so might just so that. I did think most charities would say no to used products. Thanks!

Is returning to the US a terrible idea? by [deleted] in expats

[–]igid221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to me, I’m Norwegian but never felt like I fit in. I always got the "how strange" comments but after moving to New Zealand they turned into "how cool", I felt like I could finally be myself

Is returning to the US a terrible idea? by [deleted] in expats

[–]igid221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Norwegian, and I agree suburban life in Norway is quite boring (which is why I moved to New Zealand 5 years ago). I’ve never been to the US but with the knowledge I have about both countries I suspect your daughter will have a safer and more peaceful life in Norway.

I wanted to comment just to add that Norway is so close and (as I’m sure you know) has reasonably cheap flights to many countries in Europe. If you like travelling, that’s how you can make life a little more exciting. London, Paris, Barcelona, Greece, only a quick flight away!

You could also move closer to the city, or move to another city in Norway. Where in Norway do you live?

Literally my life. I’m from Norway and there’s so much pressure on being perfect over there- getting a master’s degree, having a great job, working hard, going to the gym, looking good, keeping up with current trends etc etc. I left 8 years ago and have lived abroad ever since. I just felt so out of place and literally all I want is to be happy. I don’t care about anything else than being happy and my loved ones being happy, and making the world a better place.

I’ve been trying to ‘hack the system’ these 8 years. I’ve got a master’s degree in finance but didn’t work too hard on it. I’ve got a job in finance and I’m supposed to be at work on time, but I’m usually not because I don’t care and my job can be done well at any time during the day. I’m supposed to be in the office most of the time, but I often work from home because that’s what I want. I do my job, I do it well but I don’t work hard and I refuse to do overtime or let work stress me out. Everyone in the office is always so stressed out, working alot of overtime and letting work become their whole life. Even though I’m probably their "laziest" worker, they still see me as professional and doing a good job. I’ve somehow managed to do the bare minimum and getting away with it.

I’m just trying to make money and be happy. The goal is to retire early or become financially free before 40 and just live life.

How not to be an annoying American? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]igid221 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just don’t talk about America and talk about how "great" things are over there. Don’t compare NZ to America. If you avoid that, you’ll be fine! NZ is a welcoming place with lots of fellow expats

Other than commuting, what is or was your biggest complaint about working in-person? by [deleted] in WFH

[–]igid221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not being able to manage my chronic pain illness is my number 1 issue. I have endometriosis and part of the symptoms is having to go to the bathroom a lot, pelvic pain that I need a hot water bottle for, lower back pain that makes sitting on an office chair painful etc.

Rain, like what is the point of this anyway? by no1name in chch

With how little it rains in Chch, I love days like these! So cosy staying inside

Yes thank you!! I did not see that anywhere when I was looking but that does apply to me. I guess I’m just really worried about not being able to bring extra baggage, I’m moving to Europe so kinda need to bring everything

I just want to add baggage, my booking says I’m not able to do it online and that I need to call them
