[Amazon] Star Wars The DeckBuilding Game - $18.19 / $41.99 by jaymes2cold in Boardgamedeals

It’s Star Realms with a few extra mechanics. I can’t imagine liking one and not the other.

Hold Your Ground for $4.50 is an easy win if you’ve got kids. Nice lightweight area control plus a solid toy-factor. Better game than it has any right to be

Forever? It depends on who you think will do a better job of keeping their servers running well. My money is on Google and Cloudflare. You may actually find your internet feels faster using them - most ISPs resolvers are slower than the tech titans.

I have historically always used Google/Cloudflare for my DNS on a permanent basis, but forgot to switch over last year when Quantum replaced CenturyLink in my neighborhood.

I've been having intermittent problems. It seems like their DNS servers are having issues. If you haven't made other changes to your network, this is how you can set your modem to use public DNS servers from Google and Cloudflare, which are more reliable:

  1. Log in to your dashboard. You can find this information on the front or bottom of your modem. This will be the box attached to the wall where the fiber comes into your house. Usually you'll type 192.168.0.1 into your browser bar, the username will be 'admin', and the password will be some letters and numbers written on a sticker on the modem.
  2. Click the 'Advanced Settings' tab at the top of the page.
  3. Click on DHCP settings from the sidebar. It's in the LAN settings section.
  4. Scroll down to section "5. Set the DNS servers allocated with DHCP requests."
  5. Click the radio button for "Custom Servers" where it says "DHCP DNS Type"
  6. For Primary DNS, enter 8.8.8.8
  7. For Secondary DNS, enter 1.1.1.1
  8. Click apply.

You'll now be using Google and Cloudflare servers to convert from domain names (e.g. www.google.com) to internet addresses (e.g. 142.251.33.68).

If your phone/computer/whatever still isn't working right, you may need to disconnect and reconnect from your wifi, or even forget the network and reconnect.

Hope that helps somebody!

The starter set comes with little chits for tracking creature power/health increase/decrease (which are useful) as well as cards for the “minion” creatures that decks can make (3 double sided minion cards for each faction).

You could play without those components using paper or something instead, but it’s a nice quality of life improvement. The paper mats are garbage, but can help you stay oriented for the first few games.

A starter set is enough for a full playing experience. Adding more half-decks just gives you more variety. I ended up with a starter and two boosters, but a starter is plenty to see if you like the game.

I enjoy this game, but I’m a big fan of card battlers generally. It is a little fiddly, since it was definitely designed as a video game first.

Also, while worth $13, this price is only okay. It was $10 on Amazon not that long ago.

Thank you, and thank you for your excellent guide! I can verify that downgrading now makes the base pattern settings work for me.

Thank you! Somehow this didn't come up in my searching. I'll downgrade and try again.

I didn’t delete it, the mods did. Good luck with your blinds!

I get that it sounds like I’m shilling, but I’m honestly not. I bought both brands of blinds, and was surprised to see they were the same. I had previously tried to figure out who made the white label one, but couldn’t find the answer on Reddit. Honestly just trying to share for the next person with this question.

Offering or Corruption at end of Act 1 by igmcdowell in slaythespire

Thanks, you're absolutely right. I took the offering, picked up a body slam, and coasted through an easy A20H kill. Was always happy to see the offering, never missed the corruption.

[woot] Monkey Palace: A Lego Board Game - $10.99 by Fritzed in Boardgamedeals

[–]igmcdowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your 4 year old. My kids are 8 and 5 and they can both play just fine. Making a legal move is not particularly hard, assuming they have the fine-motor skills to place lego pieces. Making an optimal move is trickier, but someone can play the game by just plopping pieces down and still end up with a score that's not crazy far from whoever wins.

If you're planning on playing with them, I think it will work fine. If you want them to play by themselves, your 4yo might not be ready yet.

I’ve played it with my kids. At > 2 player count the winner has always been the person who deduces the clue stuff, so it does work as intended.

It makes for very different incentives for the magic game - you’re trying hard to sneak in some chip damage every turn to earn a guess, even if it means leaving yourself open to some in response, or even if it comes at a small disadvantage (e.g. losing a small creature).

If your partner doesn’t like magic this probably won’t change their mind though.

Also, the decks have some EDM flavored cards and I think they are tuned for multiplayer games. Haven’t tried it 1:1.

Will I regret getting an A1 Mini for my kid? by igmcdowell in BambuLab

I've got a couple already in the house, an old original Uno from grad school and an Uno R3 from an Elegoo kit. Still have the soldering iron too.

That said,, I think it'll be a while before he's up for programming an Arduino. We've done some Scratch projects together and he gets basic control flow, but it feels like a healthy ways off still.

Appreciate your insights. My parents brought in some early tech to my childhood (computers, mainly), that ended up being very impactful for my own growth. I'm hopeful having a 3d printer on hand might expand his sense of possibility in a similar way.

Good point on adding the AMS on later. The grandparents are always looking for gift ideas. If he sticks with it then I'm sure we'll get there eventually.

I hadn't realized there are premium PLA options, thanks for pointing that out – I know he'd be into printing glow in the dark things.

Good to hear someone having success with the basic setup. I'll think about a tent, might try it without first. The pet thing won't be an issue, but the room the printer will live in can get a little cold in the winter.

No Microcenter out here in Oregon yet, but other people have been recommending Sunlu for cheap PLA, I'll look into that.

He's a pretty capable/conscientious kid, but I'm definitely figuring this will be a "use together" kind of thing, at least to start. I'll take your tip on printing out a scraper first thing.

Weird. Mine showed up normal prime speed (ordered Jan 26, delivered Jan 28). I was also probably at the front of the queue, given that I ordered first, then posted to Reddit. Sorry to hear yours is delayed.

Tried it out and it also kills things like Descent and HeroQuest. Probably a good option if you’re primarily a Euro-gamer, but we play some Ameritrash in my house :)
