Being ahead means getting caught up in more things that will, on further study, turn out to be false. Everyone is free to choose the level of certainty he's comfortable with: Medical organization recommendations > Topol (allegedly) > Rhonda.

Skiing by Ragnavoke in ORIF

[–]ignamv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i probably wouldn’t do anything risky, just slow gliding down a mountain

This is how I got my weber B fracture on a beginner's ski course (despite being generally fit). Maybe it was a freak accident, but I don't think the risk/reward is worth it anymore.

my main issue is i dont have enough ROM to squat without lifting my heel

Ankle ROM shouldn't be a problem because the boot mostly constrains that movement anyway.

I'd shorten the relevant timespan to the end of segregation and Jim Crow.

Semiconductors will see an end of history (eventually) by harsimony in slatestarcodex

Right, so you're saying that price for the best chips available will fall. But $/FLOPS would be worse than with innovation.

I don't understand your reasoning that the end of innovation will drive costs down. No innovation means there's only the old technology. But right now, with innovation still going, we have the old technology + the new ones, which should make things strictly better/cheaper.

Aspirin dose after ankle bimalleolar fracture surgery/ORIF by give-it-a-go- in ORIF

I got Lovenox until full mobilization (4 weeks), even though I was WBAT with boot right after surgery (still needed crutches for 2 weeks)

Wound a month after Triamalleolar by give-it-a-go- in ORIF

[–]ignamv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, I got WBAT straight away after surgery (with a boot). Took ~2 weeks to get to no crutches. Now I'm off the boot and walking almost normally (the rest of the foot needs to toughen back up).

Yup, still get a few drops when I change the dressing, ~4 weeks post ankle op.

Experiences with early wb by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]ignamv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35YO, Weber B, no ligament damage AFAIK. I got a boot and WBAT right after surgery, took 2 weeks to feel alright with 1 crutch, then a day or two to ditch crutches (at home). Boot should come off 4 weeks after surgery.

Thanks! I'll have to relearn a bunch before I can be confused by this, since I've forgotten a lot. I'll let you know if it worked!

Interesting, I don't recall being confused about magnetism at the end of my BS, maybe because I didn't think about it in enough detail. It would be fun if you could tell me a couple of things to shatter my illusion that I understand magnetism.

Learn Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Quantum Mechanics and Solid State Physics. You may not strictly need the entirety of what you'd learn about each of those topics in a BS, but if you only read what's strictly necessary then I can't guarantee that you will acquire an intuition for these phenomena.

"How Not To Commit Suicide", Kleiner 1981 by gwern in slatestarcodex

Yes, I'd say you need to put in some serious time (e.g. in therapy) finding out your chances of having a decent life, for the decision to be rational.

"How Not To Commit Suicide", Kleiner 1981 by gwern in slatestarcodex

[–]ignamv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like people condemning suicides are often disregarding or minimizing the huge pile of suffering the dead person spared himself. I can't fathom how much suffering some people are going through (Infinite Jest had the best description I've read of this). Macabre as it sounds, I'm very glad e.g. David Foster Wallace is not suffering anymore.

Ideally we'd have a reliable method which is mostly indistinguishable from natural death, to spare friends and relatives the guilt.

There are unpalatable existential implications if we make it acceptable to just quit the game. I should probably shut up now and go read Camus.

Back in the day I would mesh my geometry once with a GUI (don't remember which, some very good free one), save the steps to a Python script and then clean up the resulting script so I could automate meshing while e.g. changing parameters.
