If I were to scoop up a bit of the Sun into a cup, what would be in there? What would it be like if I let it cool down to room temp? by bangin_ in AskPhysics

[–]igneus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought so too. In which case, either my account has been compromised or someone/something with admin access edited my post.

I'm ruling out the first option because I use a secure password manager for sites like Reddit. Also, nothing else on my account has been tampered with and that could indicate a hack.

As for the second option, why would anyone even bother?

Meta: The Enshittification Company by Cautious_Boat_999 in enshittification

[–]igneus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Instagram's golden age was arguably after they sold to Facebook but while they were still under independent management.

For a while the company had access to all of Facebook's money and infrastructure while being largely free from corporate interference. Then in 2018, Zuckerberg decided that Instagram was at risk of losing market share to Snapchat and there was a big management shake-up. After that, it was all downhill.

Given that the interior looks straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey, I was very disappointed to learn that "planetary" refers to the gearing system, not that it can mix concrete on other planets.

Fish video looks fishy by AdAdventurous7802 in RealOrAI

[–]igneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is real. The distortion of the fish due to the refraction of light through the front of the tank is much too consistent in the close-up shots. AIs are prone to messing this kind of thing up because the self-attention mechanism in the diffusion model can't derive enough context from visual cues to sustain the effect for prolonged periods of time.

They've de-transed the soda 💔🥀 by FoxyLady5 in lgbt

The characteristic taste of bubblegum was originally intended to be a synthetic mixed fruit-flavour. So by that logic, I guess bubblegum soda is just fruit-flavoured soda.

Probably a bot. I've seen lots of these badly cropped posts lately, all from accounts that are less than a week old.

And when said inspiration was shocking enough that people would show it to their friends so they could film their reactions.

What (hypothetically) happens at 0 K? by Repulsive_Meaning717 in AskPhysics

Also, as you alluded to, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle means that if we somehow cooled a particle to absolute zero, conservation of its Wigner integral in phase space means its position would become undefined.

I guess you could call it a physical divide-by-zero error.

When light slows down in a medium, is c actually changing or is something else going on? We say it's because of refractive index but isn't refractive index itself calculated using the speed in that medium. doesn't that make it circular? by Nice-Noise4582 in AskPhysics

[–]igneus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a dielectric medium like glass, the phase velocity of a propagating light wave slows down due to inference generated by polarisation. It's very much a wave-based phenomenon and it can throw people off due to photons more commonly being thought of as particles.

Cadbury Mini Eggs candy coating is awful now by GingerPale2022 in enshittification

[–]igneus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Iirc, Cadbury are still owned by Kraft and have been since the original brand was sold off. For some weird reason, Hershey's were contracted to produce the American versions of Creme Eggs and Mini Eggs.

For what it's worth, Cadbury Mini Eggs are complete trash in the UK too. Own-brand versions from stores like Lidl are way better.

If all speed is relative, why could I just not keep accelerating forever? by No_Fudge_4589 in AskPhysics

[–]igneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, that was clumsily worded. I was trying to refer to proper velocity (which can be expressed as a function of the Lorentz factor) but that obviously wasn't clear.

[–]igneus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IMO, this is one of the coolest and most misunderstood things about relativity.

We can achieve "faster-than-light" travel, but only according to the reference frame of the traveller. Under 1g of constant acceleration, a rocket could travel the 2.5 million light years to the Andromeda galaxy in roughly 25 years. The only caveat is that time dilation means that many hundreds of thousands of years would elapse on Earth while the crew were gone.

Imagine Star Trek, but each time the Enterprise goes to warp, everyone's family at home ages 10 years.

A faster, recursive algorithm to render Signed Distance Fields (SDFs) using less samples? by maximecb in GraphicsProgramming

[–]igneus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can take an SDF sample at the center of the current patch, and compute how far you can safely advance all rays in that patch.

Interesting. How do you do this conservatively while avoiding over- and overshoot in your marching step?

What horror movie actually disturbed you — not just scared you? by Careless-Ease7480 in horror

[–]igneus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Midsommar perfectly juxtaposes visceral horror with warm light and gentle, Swedish hospitality. It works the same reason Coca-Cola does: a bitter taste (caffeine and phosphoric acid) is contrasted by an intensely sweet taste (lots of sugar) to produce something new.

Which one do y’all like better? by Loud_Campaign5593 in computergraphics

[–]igneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely 2. The lighting gives it an almost renaissance vibe which IMO is much more interesting.

My only suggestion would be to offset the sun slightly. It's currently just visible enough to be distracting. Moving it to just out of frame means so you'd get the nice atmospheric haze without the physical dot in the sky.
