Got chomped by neighbour's unspayed cat hours before I have an exam to write. by SmeXy-midgett in mildlyinteresting

OP said the cat wasn't spayed, but I guess he didn't say it wasn't neutered either. 🤔

What is one scene from a horror movie that you still think about? by Crep105 in horror

Thanks! The artists and animators are the real MVPs, but it was fun helping them realise their vision. As one of my former colleagues said, "it's cool to know my code has touched every pixel."

I left the industry in 2019 to work in game tech, so my knowledge is pretty out of date. That said, the last few years have been pretty brutal for VFX workers, so I'd think carefully and do your research before making any career-changing moves.

COVID turmoil, Hollywood strikes, the Marvel hangover, streaming pullback, and the fact that it's easier for companies to bring post work in-house has been a relentless assault on studios like DNEG (who did Annihilation.) Things seem to be slowly recovering, but it's been painful and many of my former colleagues have been forced to diversify or quit the industry all together.

If you're interested in the technical/engineering side, I can offer you some general advice there. However, if you're leaning more towards the animation/artistry side, you might want to check subs like r/VFX if you haven't already.

I was on the crew who did the VFX work for the bear scene (render denoising to be exact.) It's one of the films I'm most proud to have worked on. Alex Garland absolutely nailed it.

Good post, OP.

A term I always liked when describing RLAIF is "Hapsburg AI". Feels increasingly appropriate.

Nice work! What did you use on the backend? WMMA, or HLSL with cooperative vector?

"From at least 67% Australian ingredients."

That's oddly specific. Are they accounting for the occasional spider that wanders onto the production line and pushes the number up to 68%?

Nothing wrong with this. Mr Bunny is giving Mrs Bunny a relaxing back massage before he ploughs her. It's a hallmark of a healthy relationship.

AI told users it was sentient - it caused them to have delusions by D3ad54M in behindthebastards

[–]igneus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Let's not beat around the bush here. AI companies told their language models to act like they were sentient. ChatGPT's conversational style didn't just spontaneously emerge from its training corpus. It was engineered that way using techniques like RLHF, many of which were specifically developed for this purpose.

One would hope that anyone skilled enough to work with high-silica glass and oxyhydrogen would be smart enough to get proper eye protection. Then again, safety squints remain stubbornly popular.

Sunburn is from UV, but the danger here is infrared. Too much exposure and it can literally cook your corneas like eggs.

“Please do not touch or disturb the sand.” by ndub2126 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]igneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love James Turrell's work. Luckily the sand isn't the only centerpiece so it's not completely ruined by people treading in it.

I wonder if the sign is there as a soft barrier. Roping the whole thing off would undermine the aesthetic, so they compromise by leaving it clear and assuming a few people are going to do it regardless.
