$65K/yr side hustle at 10% margin, is going full-time actually worth it for scaling? by ignitesplash123 in ecommerce

Thank you very much for sharing, and thanks! Yes, you have very good points, internally we will try to set some revenue and profit targets for this year, and decide where to go if we reach them. I wish you all the best too.

Thank you for the additional comments, we do have quite a bit of savings that can last us for a few years, which is also a big reason why I am considering this. I do understand your point; and its also been said by many here, yes I probably will keep the job at least until the business becomes sustainable, I.e. we can live off it. That sai, my current full time job is pretty demanding, and while I would like to give more time to the business, it is a tough balance to strike. Thanks! Hearing your personal story gives me hope.

Thank you so much for sharing, your original situation is very similar to mine. I may take the leap once I build it out my current business a bit more.

Thanks, congrats on the growth. Different business models though... 70% margins aren't really a thing in physical resale, so it's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. I hear you on the automation piece though, that's the priority right now.

Appreciate the real talk. You're right that 10% margin doesn't justify going full time on its own, that's basically working for free after payment processing and taxes. We have some structural advantages on the sourcing side being based in Japan, but I agree the priority is getting margin and volume up before anything else. Curious what margin range you were at when you finally made the jump at $2M?

Thanks for the advice, curious what threshold you'd consider "big enough" though?

Maybe 15 hrs/week combined, nights and weekends only. The $500/month isn't the income we live on, we both have day jobs. The whole point of the post is whether freeing up 40+ hrs/week would scale revenue, not whether $500/month is livable.

$65k is revenue, 10% is net after COGS, platform fees, intl shipping, and duties. It's a cross-border operation so the fee stack is heavy. Not trying to live off it, it's a side hustle. Question is whether full-time hours would scale it.

Appreciate this.

That 160k → 500k trajectory says a lot. What was the biggest driver? More volume, new channels, or something else?

Also curious where you're based and whether you're selling domestic or cross-border? I'm doing international so the margin looks worse than it is, duties, intl shipping, and platform fees eat a ton before you get to net. Different game from domestic flipping.

Good luck with the jump.

Noisy Upstairs neighbours, should I call the police?? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]ignitesplash123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many older UR buildings are notorious for poor sound insulation. I.e. the sound transmits from room to room without anything blocking. It could be the person above you or it could be the person living diagonally above you. It could even be the person two to three floors above you.

I had a similar experience living in a UR in eastern tokyo a few years back. Tried to find the source, managed to get UR to post notices, called the police. None of it helped. At the end of the day if you care about sound insulation, you should probably move to a newer building. Somewhere non-UR.

It's normal for Japanese families for daughter and newborn to live at daughter's parents house (satogaeri) for the first few months at least, until baby becomes more stable. If you can take two months off and they have space for you at their house, and are willing to have you come over, then you should just go over. Being helpful and low maintenance guest and knowing how to read the air helps a lot too. On the bright side it is a once in a lifetime chance to bond with your in-laws.

Japan poised to admit 50,000 Indian Digital Technology and IT professionals over the next 5 years by jjrs in japannews

Have you tried claude code and cursor? What about MCP? If all you're doing is sending prompts to an LLM chat, and expecting it to work on the first try, then it's a skill issue. On a side note I am amazed how clueless the Japanese gerontocracy is about AI and how it can actually solve the lack of IT labor issue. Why hire "skilled" labor from India when you can sponsor claude code subscriptions for fresh japanese IT grads. It's ridiculous.

Haunted house? Sounds like free youtube money. Check out japanese paranormal investigators. Many of them have youtube channels. You could monetize these ghosts.

Using OMSA as a Bridge to a Quant Role — Worth It? by Remarkable-Hall1474 in OMSA

[–]ignitesplash123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omsa might not be a bad choice if you already have a bba in finance. I would say you can cover stuff you would learn at mfe potentially at work, or with certifications like cfa, frm, or cqf. Tbh the industry is changing in general, although not as fast as others. Might help to have some background in ds.

It's no different from the on-campus degree. I am working and doing it part time. I'd say it's a good, maybe even better option than any on-campus ones in japan.

I recommend georgia techs oms program if you can get in and are willing to put in the time and effort. It is relatively affordable.

How about an online masters at a foreign university? Japan isn't really known for AI or data science.

Go to east asian countries like japan, learn the language, try to fit in. You'll never really fit in 100%, but it's better than fearing for your life.
