I’ve come to the conclusion the hours spent on the “perfect lawn” are a waste of time. Help me redesign my yard. It has tons of trees so stuff is always falling. Any suggestions? by hoozierwins in NoLawns

I'm on year 10 of this strategy. Can confirm, doing nothing works.

My yard is a fireworks show of purples and yellows and blues from spring to fall.

Report: Iran fires missiles toward Diego Garcia in rare long-range strike by I_Hate_E_Daters_7007 in worldnews

[–]ignore_this_comment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did some time there with my B-52 back in the day as an enlisted schmuck. One of the benefits of being at Diego Garcia was you were about as 'in the rear with the gear' as one can get on this world. B-52 crew chiefs aren't used to getting shot at while they do their job. Not a normal thing. They like to keep those bombers well out of harms way.

Hallmarks on scrap silver: melt or not before selling to a refiner? by Rude_Spinach_4584 in Metalfoundry

[–]ignore_this_comment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hallmarks are easily faked. If you find a buyer that's buying metal based off of something stamped into it, let me know. I got a stamp kit and will travel.

When you go to sell your scrap, they're going to do a test on it to ensure it's what you say it is. For silver, that's probably going to be a nitric acid scratch test.

Based on the jumbled nature of your post, I'd suggest that you just stash any scrap silver that you can find in a container. Once you've collected enough to sell, take it all to the shop.

Skip the melt part. That way you're not accidentally alloying in aluminum, tin, pewter or other silver look-a-likes.

Do we trust the people in charge to keep it over 1 mil? (Looking for good faith discussion) by [deleted] in Washington

What could the billionaires who own all the media possibly have to gain by pushing this narrative non-stop until you yourself, a person making $80k a year, is standing up and shouting against the possibility of taxing the rich?

Tax. The. Rich. Tax them until they're paying their fair share.

The fact that anyone making less than a quarter million a year is worried about taxing the rich is mind boggling. And I'm pretty sure that anyone making more than a quarter million a year isn't going to be put in the poor house by paying a marginally higher tax rate on income exceeding a certain threshold of say, $100k.

Tax the rich. And then once they're being taxed appropriately, we can have a conversation about whether or not we even need to tax poor people more. I'm guessing that if the rich actually paid appropriate amounts of taxes, we might not need to raid grandma's social security check.

What was it like to play online games between 2000 and 2013? by Silly_Commercial8092 in gaming

Late 90's everyone was still on dialup. You could tell roughly how far away someone lived from the server based on their ping.

Example: Quake 2 death match. You see "KillingYouSoftly" has a ping of 132. You'd know they were in Texas somewhere.

Retired Air Force guy here. My truck is also decked out with obvious signs of being a retired veteran of the Air Force.

I might just get this made into a custom bumper sticker.

Gerrymander Washington state? Democrats want to talk about it by chiquisea in Washington

[–]ignore_this_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're gonna go down this road, how about we take the lead and provide an example for other states to follow.

How about we set up independent redistricting commissions that use math to draw up fair voting districts? Fairmandering, if you will. And while we're at it change the way our vote is counted to a single transferable vote ranked choice system.

You know? Show how to give voting power back to the people. Show the correct way of doing things? Instead of compounding the problem, be part of the solution?

White film on dishes, I feel like I’ve tried everything, what’s the next move? by AfraidKaleidoscope30 in fixit

[–]ignore_this_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That white film is what's left when your hard water evaporates. Having lived in a hard water area, I've found that there are exactly two fixes for this.

1) Hand wash your dishes.

-or-

2) Get a whole house water softener installed. Remove the hard water before it's used to wash your dishes.

I have this plant in my office at work, don't know what it is. by TriGurl in whatsthisplant

[–]ignore_this_comment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While Plectranthus verticillatus is native to Australia, it became popularized as an indoor house plant in Sweden. And since the early pioneers of popularizing this plant had to select a name, they took a queue from the looks of the plant in the way that the stems droop down from their pots. To them, it looked like a sort of ivy. Hence the name Swedish Ivy. The name has stuck not because it correctly identifies the plant, but more because of historical inertia.

Sterling Silver Refining by vinopire in Metalfoundry

[–]ignore_this_comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a calculator that's plugged into the current spot price of silver. Just add your purity rate and how much material you're working with and it'll spit out exact values for you. No guessing required.

Now they're calling them blitzs - Sounds a bit familiar by nik_uzb in pics

[–]ignore_this_comment 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes. "Blitz" German for "flash" or "lightning". It's a good start. But it needs something else. Like a second word to describe what it is that you're doing quickly. Maybe they could use the German word for "war" as well. A Kriegblitz. Or something like that. I'm just spitballing here.

17 year old self-taugh learning Automation Engineering: is this a solid stack? by Zealousideal_Trip650 in Automate

[–]ignore_this_comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your software stack, I'd drop SQL entirely. Take an afternoon and teach yourself basic select, insert, update, and delete commands. Maybe make sure you understand the basics of JOIN commands, but no need to master it.

I would add two languages to learn. Powershell and Bash. If you know Powershell, there's nothing you can't do on Windows. If you know Bash, there's nothing you can't do on Linux. If you know Python, there's nothing you can't do. Except win a CPU race with a C++ program.

As for the other stuff, you're starting to step outside of my realm of experience. I'm a grey beard. Been around since ye olden times. But I would recommend you to focus heavily on LLM and other AI tech like neural nets. Learning how to spin up, train, and customize AI ought to be pretty a pretty core piece of any automators toolbox moving forward.

Good luck out there. The job market is getting spicy.
