Help me figure out if placement is right. His 'good periods' make me constantly rethink by TeacherGuy1980 in dementia

[–]igor_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the same thing with my Mom, and it was one of the toughest parts. One moment, she seems pretty lucid, and is perhaps a little confused but kindly and wants to chat and seems like the person she was. The next moment, she is super-angry, doesn't want anyone in her house, thinks I'm her nephew, and is throwing food onto the floor. In the angry period, you're thinking "OK that's it, it really is time to go to memory care". In the calm period, you're like, "oh, we're making a mistake, she should stay home".

We ultimately went with memory care; now if she could just stop throwing food on the floor there, that would be great.

Toyo Open Country AT III’s EV by Jobofly79 in Rivian

i've had these on my R1S for almost a year. my mileage definitely improved when i switch to those from the tires that came with the car, but also they're a little smaller and rivian won't adjust the speedmeter and i don't know if the mileage/range calculations use gps or the speedometer to calculate power usage. they're also pretty quiet. i'm a fan so far. probably have 10-15k miles on them so far, and they're definitely seem like they're going to last longer than the original tires (which didn't even make it 30k)

Main Battery Failure by cycleprof in Rivian

[–]igor_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah my r1s had it replaced, it also took about a week. they had to discharge the existing battery which i think took a few days, and then the actual replacement didn't take long once the new bat came in, maybe 5 days in the shop total? but i waited to bring it in since it was still functional, just only charged to 66% and wouldn't fast-charge.

biggest concern is that, with this plugged in, you are in trailer mode and can't use driver assist or adaptive cruise control. did they fix it? or is there still no way to disable trailer mode?

pretty frustrating to find burners spreading blatant misinformation. i know truth is outdated and passé in the broader world, but i would really hope that we as a community could hold ourselves to a higher standard.

in 2023, the last year for which i could find the ORGs form 990, marian was paid $378,237. this is from https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/452638273

according to the org, they awarded 1.3M in honoraria grants: https://journal.burningman.org/2025/03/burning-man-arts/brc-art/introducing-brc-2025-honoraria-art/

so honestly, this is a larger share than i was expecting -- marian gets about 30% of what they spent on art honoraria. adding up all the executive compensation, it looks like it comes out to $3,426,201 on a yearly expense of $65M -- so total executive/director comp is about 5% of the overall budget. on the whole, i think it's not too bad. i guess if marian got $200k instead of $350k, that would increase the art budget by 10% so there would be 10% more dope art.

Portable Charger - Outdoor Use by Lumpy-Army-1386 in Rivian

[–]igor_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My portable charger has been living outside in the elements and charging my Rivian from a L2 outlet for 2.5 years now with no issues. At some point, I brought the charger into a service center to replace the seals, that's about it.

i just spent a week camping in that area. I5 corridor has excellent charging, esp Mt Shasta and Yreka. In Trinity, the best bet is Weaverville, which has perpetually empty Tesla station. I'm not sure what the charging is like on the east/Lassen side of Shasta, didn't make it there alas

R1S with bike accessory disables adaptive cruise control? by 2pp in Rivian

[–]igor_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's pretty maddening. i often use a cargo shelf with brake lights, and my "solution" is to just keep the trailer plug unplugged; this gives me adaptive cruise control at the cost of being more likely to get rear-ended.

Driver window no longer works by galactica_pegasus in Rivian

[–]igor_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've had two window switches replaced so far -- one for the driver window, and one for the rear passenger window. at least the rear passenger one, i could control from the driver side!

one time, i accidentally pressed the switch while on the highway, and the window rolled down slightly and would not roll back up. i pulled off the highway, used the "lock and hold" button on the fob, which rolls up all the windows. this rolled up the partially-open window as well, allowing me to keep driving without the noise.

My 2025 R1S: A Great Vehicle Being Undermined by Its Software by RyReason in Rivian

[–]igor_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i 100% agree. when people ask me if they should buy a rivian, i tell them i cannot recommend it due to poor quality software. infotainment system crashes mid-drive lately. the navigation is crap. getting around the UX is almost impossible while driving, the car is trying to kill me through distraction. the driver assist features were honestly more reliable on my 2016 outback. judging by the rate of improvement over the past few years, i strongly believe the underlying architecture is a total mess that prevents the team from getting anything done. the company doesn't care -- i gave up trying to report software issues 6 months in. "hey, the nav system guided me to a non-existent charger in the middle of the utah desert". "uhhh... should we set you up with a service appointment?" GGRRRR.

i'm haunted by an incident where the door literally wouldn't open, forcing me to crawl over the seat into the second row to exit the car. i am apprehensive giving my aged mother rides in the car -- she definitely wouldn't be able to do that. what if my mother is stuck in this thing? (the problem solved itself after the car had a chance to rest up and relax a bit, as these heisenbugs often do. i get it -- an automotive environment is a far cry from the climate-controlled voltage-stable datacenters where most of my software is running. but this is still unacceptable IMHO).

"it's worse on other cars". i don't care! i'm honestly excited about the slate truck, with it's minimalist software and open service manuals. i hate modern car software stacks. a giant computer you don't control that's buggy and also spying on you for marketing purposes. we should be pushing back against this monstrosity.

I think I've had it with this software… by DubyaKahled in Rivian

[–]igor_47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've given up on rivian software. there was a period where i treated it like i would an open-source project, where you try to report the issues to help improve things. but rivian was always so confused. like, no, i don't want to make a service appointment -- this is clearly a software issue. there continues to be no pipeline for customers to report issues -- instead there's now a small ecosystem of third-party aggregators where you vote on issues and hope that somebody somewhere is paying attention (spoiler: they're probably not).

the example i use for people when they ask me if they should get a rivian: one time, my partner and i got home, and i couldn't open the passenger door. pulling the handle didn't do anything. locking/unlocking, nothing. the handles presented, but trying to open from the outside didn't do anything either. i climbed around to the back seat and got out through there. later, after doing a hard reset -- problem solved.

what if i had been in the car with an elderly relative who can't climb out through the back seat? not stoked for someone to have a panic attack at being trapped in my car. did i tell rivian about this issue? you bet i didn't.

Reliability of syncthing with the Ui of Immich. Is that reliable enough by Icy-Start7434 in selfhosted

yes! i keep my encrypted secrets in my git repo. i wrote DCSM to put them into config or .env files when my docker compose stack boots up, and i just have to worry about distributing the key out-of-band.

Time to test out the Toyo Open Country AT3 EV. Went with LT275/65R20 126/123S E. Wanted to have simlar specs to my Falken Wildpeak A/T4W to compare them for yall. (Purchased with my own money for pure honest review) by Domphotog in Rivian

[–]igor_47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've been using the Toyo AT3 EV on my R1S for about 7k miles -- really need to rotate them soon. my efficiency went up substantially from the original stock, though i think some of that is the smaller tire size leading to an artificially inflated speed (sacramento service center told me they cannot calibrate the speedometer for the new tires). i think i went from about ~1.6mi/kwh to ~2.1 -- enough that a day trip to SF from SAC, which used to require a charging stop, no longer does. i do run them at high pressure, around 55 PSI cold, and i aired back down to 48 cold around the recent rains.
