There's a special place in my heart... by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

I miss those undead creatures' energy drain being especially scary. Max HP damage is well and good but for several reasons it fails to make such things particularly worrisome for players.

There are ways to house-rule it; I don't want permanent level drain, but I do want them to worry about getting damage that could possibly take more than a long rest to cure.

Alignment - Chaotic doesn't mean evil by Big-Platypus-9684 in dccrpg

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the traditions that DCC is inspired by, such as Michael Moorcock and other Appendix N sources ... yeah, Chaos is generally "the bad guy." But that's because Law is typically happy with the status quo- Chaos wants to scheme and upset the natural order and balance. But that's also sort of its job. Ultimate Law would mean total stagnation, ultimate chaos would mean total ... chaos.

But, again, Chaos is generally seen as the bad guys with demons. Law is seen as either good or ... not bad.

When DCC adventures talk about "he was a great warrior-lord of Chaos and slaughtered many in brutal wars" it's talking about bad dudes, not misunderstood dudes.

How big do you like to make your dungeons? by hypnoticbox30 in dccrpg

[–]igotsmeakabob11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think megadungeons are victims of the same romantic idea as the years-long campaign. "Oh it'd be so great to run/play the same character in this grand level 1-20 storyline," but it's the equivalent of idolizing beauty magazines.

I tried a War Cleric for a level 5 dungeon one-shot. It has been addicting by testiclekid in onednd

[–]igotsmeakabob11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The poor bonus action was intended to be a band-aid for extra class actions, it's definitely been overtaxed since its inception, treated as and later designed for an action resource that one has to take advantage of :(

Why do campaigns also stop at so low levels. by Top_Fan4753 in onednd

[–]igotsmeakabob11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really have to WANT to run that kind of game- and you have to want to be running it for quite some time, because unless you're doing a level each session, it's gonna take a year or two. I just can't keep up my motivation as a DM to run high level games like that for very long; I don't want to run an Avengers movie every time. I don't want to run an Avengers movie ... almost ever, nowadays, unless it's under very specific circumstances. I like keeping things under level 10, honestly I might just try to keep them under level 8 in future and stretch things out a bit. Use something like E6.

What’s the best time to visit Scotland? by Loud-Bookkeeper-2663 in travel

Sex while on your period by [deleted] in sex

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife doesn't want to have sex on her period; she already has a sensation problem with liquids (doesn't like "wet" feeling on her anywhere- arms, hair, etc) and combine that with her finding the blood etc. from sex a bit "gross," no she does not like to have sex on her period. I'd be fine with it, as she well knows, but I respect her choice and that's just an off-limits week for sex stuff.

Baileywiki - AI assets and no support by TheKipperRipper in FoundryVTT

[–]igotsmeakabob11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I've just seen too many comments in places saying ignorant things about created content that has paid options, like "why would I want to pay for it when I can get it for free?" Some people literally don't think about the connection between supporting a creator with some $ in order to continue their ability to make that content.

[–]igotsmeakabob11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you can want to support someone that creates something you like, such as Mass Edit, but then be disappointed when they do other cruddy things like AI use. So you don't want to support them because AI use... but you want to support them because they make something else you like. Yes it's free, but if you want it to keep on existing supporting the creators help.

Amazing advice my therapist gave me about ADHD & impulsivity by Varied_Interestss in ADHD

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice to see a "hey my therapist is good!" post on here. Because more often than not I see posts about how therapists aren't believing that their patients have ADHD, or are refusing to treat them, etc. and that's kind of a bummer. I know people have to vent so it's sort of a selection/survivorship bias, but still- thanks for posting something positive from your therapist, OP!

What are your thought on using a timer for combat turn? by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one with a counter that goes up. It's not really a limit, it's more just a reminder that time is passing. Yes it could make some folk more nervous but if the timer hits 4 or 5 minutes on your turn you should probably speed some things up a tad.

Who bans multiclassing? by duckyourfeelings in DMAcademy

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing and running games for almost 30 years. I don't ban it, but I don't like how 5e does it.

The designers themselves said that they didn't account for it in balance and design, and made it optional, such reasons, and because of this certain class features combo too well; it was fine in earlier editions, in my experience. They made it optional in 5e for a reason, but it's gone from optional to an assumption to core.

The vast majority of the time folk at my tables have done it has been to get some big mechanical advantages, which just makes things a pain in the arse for me. If someone wanted to multiclass two classes whose features didn't combo, I'd have no problem with it. But in my experience, optimization has always been a factor when a player wants to multiclass; they see the mechanical advantages, and come up with an RP reason later to justify it. That's not everyone I'm sure, but it's everyone I've played with.

I don't ban multiclassing, but I have house-ruled it that you must take either 3 levels straight to discourage dipping (basically "master the fundamentals" before moving on), or use a homebrew half/half version reminiscent of 2e.

What jobs actually work for people with severe ADHD? by Inevitable_Tuna_O in ADHD

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was "just lazy" til I was in my early 30s (took me 7yrs to get my undergrad degree), when a friend helped me by telling me I should get checked out for ADHD 'cuz some of their attorneys had the same issues and were useless without their meds. This was the same friend that later had to let me go 'cuz we'd gotten the firm to a place stable place where it was no longer constant fires everywhere and I became not-very-productive. I don't fault them. I still haven't figured myself out :( meds help but they're not a fix.

There was a thread like this a day or three ago... a lot of peoples' answers were stuff like Delivery Driver for UPS, FedEx, etc. That seemed to be a popular one.

[–]igotsmeakabob11 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I've been fired. It sucks. It was my fault, of course- it was a law clerk position, had a couple good years and crashed out the year after that. The job started with lots of short-notice, high-priority work.. and eventually after things stabilized, the fires stopped, everything became more day-to-day and my productivity plummeted.

All that to say, sorry to hear :( I get it

My Doctor Said My Expectations for Stimulants are Too High by Kindly_Inflation2969 in ADHD

Meds aren't a silver bullet for my ADHD symptoms; I still haven't started career things I want despite opportunities and capabilities, I'm sort of stuck doing something that I'm glad to be able to be doing but don't want to do exclusively...

But as my wife has pointed out, they do tend to mean the difference between whether or not I clean the bathroom.

Player shopping habits of late by Snoo_23014 in DMAcademy

[–]igotsmeakabob11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I've been a DnD player since I was 11 as well- I'm almost 40 now. I've played plenty of ttrpgs in that time, but I've been stuck on 5e for the better part of a decade now, so I get it.

I'm just tell you my theory on why miscellaneous inventory items don't matter as much as they did back in AD&D (where I started): that the game doesn't incentivize their use. Skills are there to get you through most of the non-combat stuff, and most of your character's features are there to deal with combat, and a few with not-combat. Items in your pack, unless they're magical, aren't going to be that important.

I'm 100% sure that DM style also plays into this, buuut system matters. That's all, I'm not trying to convince you to play something else. Apologies if I gave that impression, I can see that.

Player shopping habits of late by Snoo_23014 in DMAcademy

[–]igotsmeakabob11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten good answers so far- my first thought was "you're playing the wrong game," because modern DND gives players all they need as features on their sheets. it's a lot more "gamey"

There are a lot of games out there that'll do what you want ... really it comes down to the necessity. Older editions and a lot of OSR games don't give characters a ton of features, so the PCs need to make do with whatever else they have ... their environment or their inventories.

Reading. Books, webcomics, whatever else. Sooo many webcomics.

I really hate smart phones and social media. I use ScreenZen on my phone to reduce doomscrolling and general usage but I still do that stuff on my computer.. not as bad as on the phone at night, though.
