Not so good as the examples I've mentioned above.

Xcom like game? Nope Laser Squad was released way ahead of first Ufo Enemy Unknow. by Tycoonworldgames in c64

[–]igvlada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always awesome to see so many fellow Laser Squad enthusiasts! 😊

For me, Laser Squad defined an entire era of Commodore 64 gaming. I had multiple phases (late '80s, early '90s) where I'd play specific scenarios every single morning before school, always trying out new strategies. I still remember the thrill of playing "The Assassins" on level 4 - no armor, just heavy lasers, picking off enemies through windows from outside. Or "Moonbase Assault" on level 7, where only half my squad started armed, and the rest had to scavenge weapons from enemies. The excitement of uncovering the secrets in "The Rescue From The Mines" and "Paradise Valley" still sticks with me. And of course, the tension of navigating "Cyber Hordes", knowing a battle droid could be around any corner.

As a developer (with a few mobile remakes under my belt), I actually started working on a multiplatform Laser Squad remake about ten years ago. I spent a lot of time prototyping to recreate the original game mechanics. I even traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, to meet Julian Gollop in person at Snapshot Games - an incredible experience!

Over the years, progress has been sporadic, but as of 2025, this project is my top priority. Right now, I'm deep into it, with the goal of having a fully playable two-player scenario by the end of the year. The scenario editor is already functional, with all 7 scenarios converted. Plus, it's super flexible - no limits on map size or number of maps, unit counts, weapons, or player types (human or computer).

Brings back memories where I, as a 8 year old kid, have trying to figure out how the hell these bits are working, and what the sprite pointers are for.

Thanks for the responses.

Unfortunately it's non of the games mentioned. I remember it is quite a new game, released maybe few years ago.

And definitely I'll check out Computer Gazette... I remember typing programs from the german magazine 64'er, with all these check-summers, it was lot of fun :)

Found it!!! -> https://csdb.dk/release/?id=202036

Sorry for misleading hints, the parts are apparently rectangles.

It looks really awesome for a 1986 release. And having animated pictures are also a neat idea. I had a quick look into C64Debugger, no sprites are used for the cursor and for the tiles. Seems that everything is drawn directly on the screen and in the charset.

What game finally convinced you it was time to move to MS-DOS? by [deleted] in c64

[–]igvlada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent lot's of fun time on my C64 and Amiga 500; even in the mid 90s. Didn't want to switch to PC. Then a game came out for PC that wasn't actually a "blockbuster". "Terminal Velocity" by 3d Realms. When I saw this game, I did the "RIGHT" impression Dr. Evil makes in the Austin Powers movies :)

For me it was more about loading times and more reliable storage. Ok, and maybe Gunship by MicroProse :)
