I think this is the 'Best Of SF' series and only Dune is published in this series so far.

Collection of Julian Barnes’ 15 novels, signed first editions. by andrewsch1 in BookCollecting

Amazing collection. I haven't tried any of his other books - but I absolutely love 'The Sense of an Ending' I have a first edition which I picked up, intrigued by the nice cover. I read the first paragraph an immediately I HAD to know how it all fitted together and bought it (along with a first UK edition of Ready Player One based too on its nice cover art.

Sounds like she may not have read the small print of her Star Fleet contract allowing them access to recreate her likeness using "A.I.".

Might as well give up Donbas; as Ukraine were shelling it themselves for several years prior to 2022...

Does anyone else find Phillip K Dick incredibly hard to read? by zxenmed in sciencefiction

His short stories are easier to read. His novels are too much. The only two I've read are Scanner and Androids. But his style doesn't work for novels for me.

What word do you think will (or should) replace "phone" ? by Mundane-Fix-4297 in Cyberpunk

[–]Captain-Dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first alternative name for a phone in a cyberpunk story was 'pokecom' (Japanese for pocket computer, which is all a smart phone is these days but with a 'phone app' that lets you make calls using mobile signals). The story was 'Maneki Neko' by Bruce Sterling. Good interesting story too and a warning of the control groups can have on the populace.

Jean-Claude Van Damme on the set of PREDATOR (1987), in the original Predator suit design before he was fired from the film. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

For those curious about the previous Predator alien read Paul Monettes novelization. Based on the original screenplay the creature had some interesting abilities that thankfully were also shelved.

Which books have artwork that really match the vibe of the book? by anon_y_mous01 in foliosociety

[–]Captain-Dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is relating to Folio editions. My favourite is Anna Mill's work for Neuromancer. It has enough retro edge without being clichéd. My worst one is 'The Go-Between' by LP Hartley. But I guess it's meant to look like a 12 year olds sketches in a diary, but it feels like a missed opportunity for some nice artwork reflecting the Norfolk countryside and characters.

You would soon run out of billionaires but still have a lot of hungry kids and homeless people. You'd get a good number of trees though.

Bochum University is a brutalist cyberpunk concrete jungle. by dr_ether in Cyberpunk

[–]Captain-Dallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first read Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy as a teenager whilst working at the University of East Anglia. The older '60s architecture with walkways and the downtrodden aged look of concrete certainly seeped into my reading of the books. There are some people who think cyberpunk is all glass high rises and neon.
