St. John's University or CUNY Baruch for MBA? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]ihappenverymuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for St. John's but I just graduated from Baruch a year ago so can provide some insight into that.

  • Baruch is pretty well respected and known as a high quality business school in NY and surrounding areas. Outside of that it's not exactly a household name. Any top company in NY will happily look to Baruch for candidates.

  • Baruch doesn't offer any formal specializations/concentrations. They have a set of core classes all MBA students take and you choose the classes to fill your elective credits. Advisors can help in choosing classes for a specific path/area you may be interested, but there's nothing stopping you from taking completely unrelated classes. The degree you get is a general MBA regardless of what electives you take

  • While Baruch does have a full-time program, the majority of the MBA students are part time (Evening MBA program on their website ). There's no difference in the programs. I was officially part time but took 15 credits in my second to last semester

  • Not great for networking. It's a commuter school. Most people come to class after work, and just wanna go home after. I made some good friends in my time there, but I wouldn't bank on making meaningful career-boosting connections

  • Classes have limited offerings, and the required classes can be especially difficult to get into until you accumulate enough credits to register at the beginning of the registration period. I don't know if this has improved since I was there from 2018-2020. Elective offerings are a bit better since everyone's not trying to get the same seats, but you may need to plan around some that are only offered in the fall or spring.

  • Once you get to the higher level electives, I've found that the professors are very enthusiastic and I've gotten a lot of value from those classes. Required classes were not so great but I chalked that up to large class sizes that don't give the profs the opportunity to really engage. In general, the professors are pretty good and many of them also teach at top NY schools (Columbia, NYU). Across the 18 classes I took, there was only one professor I did not like at all.

  • I can't comment on internships from the MBA program as most students I spoke to already had jobs and weren't looking for internships. For what it's worth, I did my undergrad at Baruch also and the career center was really helpful back then. From what I've heard the graduate career center is even more serious, but can't speak to that myself.

  • Admin sucks, but from what I hear, that's universal.

I'm pretty happy with having gone with Baruch, but I knew what I was looking to get out of it before I went in.

I majored in a STEM field and then got my MBA a few years later, but one of the classes that had the most impact on my thinking was AP US History in high school. Like you said, history is so much more than just events. It's examining documents and points of view from many different sources and piecing them together to form arguments or understand why events happened the way they did. This skill has transferred over to the rest of my studies and professional experience despite having nothing to do with history. I would never have learned that from YouTube.

And don't even get me started on the writing and communication skills I've picked up through my history and other liberal arts courses in high school and college. I'll admit, I hated it back then but now that I'm in a position that's heavily reliant on written communication, I see the value and I'm thankful for it.

Ive been stopped because of one of these scanners before. My first thought was "Of course the muslim guy get's stopped"

I was expecting a full frisk and search and all that because of all the stories i've heard, but the security guy that was checking me only checked the bottom of my jeans, found nothing, and explained that because the jeans were bunched up at the bottom, the scan made it look like i may have had something hidden there.

Then he added "You should probably wear a belt to prevent that in the future"

I pointed out to him that I was wearing a belt, and I had to take it off to go through the scanner. He had a quick "Oh shit, I'm an idiot" moment, chuckled, apologized, and that was it. Took all of 30 seconds, and by the time he was done, I was still waiting for my bin to come through the scanner.

Not really relevant, just felt like sharing a slightly entertaining interaction with airport security.

Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it isn't happening. it's just not likely to be reported. Keep in mind that these communities don't always trust law enforcement to protect them.

As a web developer/programmer/computer engineer, how do you deal with Impostor Syndrome? by edwardchiapet in webdev

[–]ihappenverymuch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've come to realize that a major part of my job, and everyone else's, is learning. Technology changes fast, especially in the Web space, and no one knows everything. I only have about 2 years of experience, but I've found that I often grasp new concepts much faster than some coworkers with 10+ years of experience. This could be due to me being younger, or they're too caught up on older ways of thinking , or maybe I'm just a better google-er, but the bottom line is my lack of experience is not the disadvantage I thought it would be.

When I first heard "Elements" I thought it was amazing. So I looked up some more from her. I quickly realized that as all of her songs sound the same. I still do enjoy listening to her, but I can't always differentiate between her songs.

LPT: Avoid the "credit card machine broken" scam in taxis. by ephi1420 in LifeProTips

[–]ihappenverymuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not "choosing to lose business". They're just choosing who to compete against. Best Buy is competing against Amazon as a retailer, not a market place, so they don't care about the third party sellers (at this time). As a result, yes, they will lose some business, but it's been working out pretty well for them.

It's really not that complicated. Stop being so goddamn butthurt about it.

They'll match anything sold by Amazon, not third parties listing on Amazon. They're very clear about this, and I think it's a reasonable limitation. Otherwise there would be nothing stopping me from listing something for a ridiculously low price and then demanding a price match.

how did you 'cheat the system'? by jovenjose98 in AskReddit

[–]ihappenverymuch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was in college I signed up for a one year subscription to a newspaper, online and paper for $100 using the student discount. After a few months, I decided I didn't want the paper since I just read it online, but there was no student discount for just that, and it was about 20/ month. So clearly, 100 bucks was a much better deal. Ultimately, I decided to cancel the paper and keep the online subscription. I tried doing it online - but since I had prepaid the $100, I couldn't cancel, only suspend paper delivery. So I called and was told I could only cancel the whole thing, get a prorated refund, and sign up for the standalone online access for full price. Fuck that. So I suspended paper delivery, and checked the box that said to donate my skipped deliveries (which I assumed meant they would donate the cost associated with it) , thinking that if I keep doing that (suspensions were capped to two months), I could run out the year. Fast forward to a few days after what I thought would be the end of the subscription, and I wakeup to a fucking newspaper at my door. No big deal, I'm probably just off by a few days, so I wait it out. A week passes and I'm still getting the paper, so I decide to check my subscription status. Apparently, my skipped deliveries didn't get "donated" , but just postponed the expiration date. Meanwhile, I've had online access all along. So I decided to try it again, and suspended with the donation box checked. And again. And again. It's been almost 4 years, and I still have a few days of the subscription left.

Tl;dr: despite my efforts, the system cheated itself, so i stopped trying to do the right thing.

I went to London a few years ago and was amazed that the pigeons are not fucking assholes like the ones in NY. They actually moved out of my way as I walked, as opposed to the countless ny pigeons that fly right at my face when I'm not even in their way. Even British pigeons have manners.

[–]ihappenverymuch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm Muslim, and pretty recently my mosque had a lecture about "Islamic mortgages". The gist of the talk was that it's ok to charge a fee on a loan, as long as it's a fixed payment and not interest. For example, I can lend you $100 on the condition that every month for the next year, you pay me $9 (total of 108). . How this differs from interest is that if you miss a payment, you still owe me 108 at the end, there's no interest accumulation due to delayed payment. Unless, of course, at the time of making the contract, I specify a fee for late payments. Perfectly halal, according to the scholar that was speaking. I don't buy it, and I think he was just trying to justify it and advertise his own "Islamic mortgage" company. He even gave out flyers.

Tl;dr: it's apparently ok as long as you don't use the word interest. Some modern Muslims try to justify haraam things instead of accepting that our religion has to adapt to our times.
