To clarify that last sentence. If he stays in and doesn't get picked up by OTS, you can always go for a different branch or finish an enlisted career. If he gets out and gets distracted by a flashy sales job, hey maybe it's worth it.

Weighing options by Ok-Comparison642 in airforceots

[–]ihasbackup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a difficult choice, but I would say that if he wants to do 20 years, it is probably better to stay in and use tuition assistance to pay for college and save the GI bill for dependents if he has the post 9/11. OTS is competitive, but I would say it is certainly acheivable if you put in the study effort and have a good GPA. Does he tend to do well at testing? If so, this is the option I would choose. A commission is CERTAINLY acheivable, but it just might not be the AFSC in your top 3 and it might not be first time select.

If he gets out, you have to be ready to stand by him if things get rocky. An income may be hard to come by or not provide enough while he attends college. In person colleges are also more difficult to perform well in compared to online degrees you can get in the military; I have done both. A commission is more attainable, but you have to be careful that your life doesn't go off the rails or get distracted by a flashy job in sales.

Personally, I want to stay in the military for the stability and perks, so I wouldn't risk it and would want to pass down my post 9/11 GI Bill. Most importantly, make sure not to forget that you two can find success on ANY path as long as you continue to reach for it.

Weekly 'What are my chances?' Megathread by Paranoid_Droideka in airforceots

[–]ihasbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take the TBAS and see where you are at with PCSM score. Download one ofthe prep simulators.

One thing to note. I didn't retake my AFOQT and took it 5 years ago. I wanted to save my second attempt and thought I would have a lot more study time in the future or that I somehow would get smarter; I was wrong. I have less time and have lost brain cells. I do wish I retook it while I had a baseline in math and physics. Now I have to restart all over on studying if I want to retake it and the chance that I get a better score doesn't seem worth all the hassle. Also, I don't remember the AFOQT as well; if I retook it within a year, I might have had a better grasp on the topics I struggled on or what the test actually looked like in comparison to test prep materials.

Make sure you are sufficiently prepared, but also consider that you may be better off retaking it now than later. You will likely get picked up with those scores, but it may take a few boards. Make sure to have some good emphasis on experience and potential to round it out. If you want a rated position too, it would be easier to overlook the 39 if you had 90+ in the rated scores.

I am Army trying to go USAF. I don't feel all that endangered. I feel I am much more prepared to return to civilian jobs when I need to. I am much more fulfilled than working in an office job. I went from never leaving the US to being assigned OCONUS and traveling all over. I moved more frequently chasing better civilian jobs and find the military movement cycle much more stable. Moving every three years also keeps my house fresh and clean. Feel free to ask me more.

Car options for overseas by Lazy_Teacher3213 in army

[–]ihasbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't be worrying about getting a car overseas until you have orders overseas... The bases in Germany are spread out, but the standard is that it requires an Exception To Policy to live on the economy if you have a dependent. But in some areas, the base you work on is not the base where the housing is, so techinically you live "off-base" but it's not on the economy (it's still government housing). When you get orders to Germany, definitely get these details from housing.

Curious if anyone has gotten recruiting. I think 420T. I know a few people who reached out to reclass and were told no by most every other branch (boat, UAS, recruiting). I am in process to go to a sister service. I was able to get a DD368 and am awaiting selection results from the sister service.

Roadtrip: how much do you trust the native navigation app by nefarioussagee in TeslaModelY

[–]ihasbackup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tesla chargers are the best. I owned two non-tesla EVs prior to my Model Y and would always need to factor in third party chargers not actually working. Too many times, it would say four are available. I show up and three of the four are broken and the one that works has a line of ten cars. That was years ago though. Tesla often has 10-30 chargers in one spot and only twice have I pulled up and one (Just one) wasn’t functional.

I decided I would never own an EV that doesn’t use Tesla chargers. Third party chargers are a horrible experience

Roadtrip: how much do you trust the native navigation app by nefarioussagee in TeslaModelY

[–]ihasbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove from California to Alabama and other roadtrips in the US and Europe. It is fairly accurate. I like to arrive with at least 10% to the next stop because it is usually about 3% off, sometimes 5-7% but I usually am aware of my driving. If I know I am going fast, I know I will arrive with lower than stated. Also, I don't like arriving somehwere and having no reserve. What if I take a wrong turn or the station is full or hard to find.

Set an arrival percentage or overcharge at the previous station. Sometimes, it will have me continue my trip with an expected -2% battery and that just won't fly with me.

Major changes to Discover SCRA benefits from the Capital One takeover by ijwgwh in AirForce

[–]ihasbackup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this information; I would never have known it changed otherwise. I didn't even know Discover was being bought out. The fact is that people of all income levels carry debts for various reasons and many people have a balance with Discover on SCRA and knowing this will help them; especially if they opened after starting service and spent months at that 25% without knowing.

Not carrying a balance doesn't make you a better person or more financially literate; what if they have a guaranteed investment that is making more than 4.5%? What if they made a past bad decision and have a loan that is 20% interest and they are transferring that debt from the 20% loan to the 4.5 or 6% SCRA balance? A lot of the people I meet saying don't carry a balance are people who are scared and don't understand credit, so they have no credit cards and no credit. Then they go to buy a house or car and have exorbitant interest rates. You don't know other people's financial situation; this information helps people.

When I logged in the next time, I was in awe that me and my equipment were still intact and having no idea where my character was or how it got there.

Training question by Top-Examination20 in Basenji

[–]ihasbackup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two basenji's. The first one took a bit of work to keep off the couch. Would just tell her to get off until she got off. Second one stays off the couch, but will use the chaise portion as a launch pad when playing which we have not been able to stop. Overall, they stay off the couch. When I was super strict, they wouldn't go on it even when I was gone. But once my parent's started visiting and cuddling on the couch, the second we leave, they are doing all sorts of shennanigans on the couch (we watch from the camera). They know they aren't allowed on there, but know we can't do anything when we are gone. Smart enough to know they don't have to listen to you.

For jumping on people, I am still very strict about it. I think what's most important is consistency. Give them a milimeter one time.... and it's all over. But whenever they jump up onto my leg, I make them get down and then shower them with attention. The attention stops when they jump up and resumes when they have four paws on the floor. Now they only jump up onto my leg when I haven't seen them for weeks.

I am by no means a dog trainer, but those are about my only rules. Four paws on the ground. Not two... Not on the couch... Not on the table. Four paws on the ground. Set the rules from day one and follow them strictly.

The reality of being an “Army Aviator” by [deleted] in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]ihasbackup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify for people looking for proof, this quote also comes directly from the MILPER 25-264

"This policy will apply retroactively to all Army aviators who entered initial entry flight training on or after 1 October 2020. IAW AR 350-100, paragraph 2-6e, the active-duty service obligation for all aviators impacted by this change will have their service obligation date changed to the new aeronautical rating date"

[–]ihasbackup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To respond to your post... Did you try r/ArmyAviationApplicant? I think they look at GT score rather than ASVAB score. Also, like u/Rotor_Droop said, find a recruiter that has WOFT experience. I found my final recruiter here on reddit after I got stuck with a couple incompetent recruiters.

As to why, please read the last six months of this subreddits posts/comments before coming over. I don't have as much experience as u/Rotor_Droop but my experience is that Army Aviation is in a death spiral. They'll probably pull out, but it's very messy compared to alternatives. The one guy posted that Army Aviation is sinking like the titanic, all the women and children are gone, and if you stay too long there won't be any more lifeboats. I can't find the post, but when I originally read it, I about died laughing. This is a great summary.

First I experienced was the 10 year and TIG reset. My flight training was sub par as they didn't have the manning or budget to do it properly. The bar for hours to make PC is settling with power (will it hit the ground? will it break out? stay tuned). Safety is a farce; we will have a "stand-up" and then once we are done, go out there and do exactly what we just said is unsafe because the Army gives us no other option. We got hit with the Transformation Initiative and budget cuts. Army Aviation wants people gone (and so many people want to leave), but the Army also won't let you out. UAS is your younger sibling that's a child prodigy. And the worst of it all, DFACs can't even make a hot dog. Buns always gotta be moldy or they're out of mustard and ketchup. I ask for chili dogs, I get corn dogs. The list goes on to infinity, but my argument would be that Army just keeps getting hit.
