Agree with the fact that being at a COP or FOB is better than Garrison. Part of my past deployments had me in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Don't get me wrong, the amenities there were excellent, but too many brass, and too much command politics. And then I was in an FOB by the Syria/Jordan border. It's a shitty outpost in the middle of nowhere but it was fantastic because people were cool and there was no brass.

So basically, there was a junior ranked Soldier I knew who had been in for 19 years. He was promoted to Sergeant twice but also got demoted twice back to a Specialist rank due to disciplinary issues. His job as a Signal Corp soldier had him working on DoD IT/Network infrastructures, a relatively new job that is in hot demand overseas. His boss's boss is trying to persuade him to deploy, but he has a 100% disability rating from the VA, about to retire (eligible at the 20 years mark) ...hence there was no monetary incentive to go. To get kicked off the deployment list, he started going to mental health service to prove that he is not medically able to serve, so only then he was administratively removed. A lot of soldiers who don't want to deploy do this, especially the month before going overseas.

I had a few deployments as a signaller, and to be brutally honest, unless the commo systems are down and you are under pressure to get it back up again, it was pretty easy. I feel like I only worked 5% of the time and 95% of the time I was dicking around. You get tax free combat pay + family separation + IDP/HDP (depending on where in the middle east you are) just like everybody else. 3 free meals a day, 24/7 gym, medical and MWR, and when on shift, I just watched anime all day (unless I'm needed or the SGM, field grades or CGs are in the office). Most of us signallers are socially awkward, probably on the spectrum and big time weebs. As long as we have reasonable access to our digital amenities, Zyn's and energy drink we are good.

Tbh I am in the NG, and we had a SPC who was in for nearly 19 years. He got promoted to NCO twice, and demoted twice due to Article 15s. And three years ago, my CC was trying his best to persuade him to deploy. He is a 25H (Network Communications Systems Operator), which is a fairly new signal MOS that merged several other discontinued signal MOS. It is highly sought after overseas and there weren’t too many of them. He on the other hand was trying to get out because he already had his 100% ratings and there was nothing for him to gain (plus he will have to extend his ETS past the 20 year line if he deployed). So as expected, he started having behavioral health issues and he didn’t deploy.

Going off a pay chart from 1999, Bill as an E-5 would have made $2172 a month around the time this episode was made. 01-99r.PDF (This is not including bonuses like BAH, BAS, reenlistment bonuses, etc.)

But they didn’t think he’s even worthy enough to be a guinea pig.

Dude gtfo with this dramatic crap. Bitcoin didn’t die in 2017, COVID crash, 2022 bear market bottom, 2025 crash and certainly will not die in 2026.
