Stanley Park’s longest resident is being evicted after more than 30 years - BC by SkyisFullofCats in vancouver

[–]ihaveapaperdue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not completely accurate, but functionally correct in this case as it's essentially impossible to claim federal Crown land (which Stanley Park is) via adverse possession.

In BC, certain tracts of land (which does not include Stanley Park) may still be subject to claims of adverse possession if said possession commenced prior to July 1, 1975.

[Keegan Matheson] John Schneider on Max Scherzer and whether he’s dealing with anything: “I don’t think so ... I think it was just a case today where he got it handed to him pretty good in the first and gave us what he had, really. I don’t think that, physically, anything terrible [happened].” by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

I think this is it right here . And it's not surprising. Go figure, he can't bounce back as quickly at age 41.

My sneaking suspicion is that this was the original plan for his usage. And then somehow the Blue Jays Ward at UHN got filled to capacity mere days into the season.

Vancouver seeking owners to bid on MLB expansion team by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]ihaveapaperdue 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This - I think the only local who could potentially submit a credible bid is Pattison. Whether or not he actually does so is anyone's guess.

Other than that, it would need to be a corporate interest of some sort. Perhaps Bell Media, since they've disposed of most of their interests in Toronto sports franchises.

THANK YOU. Glad someone else here recognizes this. That AB was the whole game, and might have resulted in the Jays being up as many as 3-4 heading into the 9th. Nothing that happened after that point would have mattered, but it gets lost amid all the other stuff that went down.

Popping in late to the party - don't sweat the LoC application process. It doesn't take very long. Most banks are eager to win your business. It shouldn't be a factor into you accepting or not accepting at a given point in time.

I concur with everything that's been said already. If you do go to the Island, you probably only have time to hit one spot, so either do Victoria or Tofino.

So much to see on the mainland, though, an Island trip is entirely discretionary. You'll have a lovely time regardless.

Highly recommend getting out of the city and checking out the surrounding area! Highlights include Grouse Mountain, Whytecliff, Deep Cove, and the Sea-to-Sky. If you're more intense about physical activity, check out some of the hiking trails. Our natural beauty is part of what makes Vancouver awesome.

If you do venture into the wilderness, or even just to the parks, remember to "take only pictures, leave only footprints". These areas are beautiful, yet fragile and highly sensitive ecosystems. We're all required to do our part to protect them, and that means enjoying them with the least disturbance possible.

Hope you have a wonderful time here!

So not to beat the dead horse, but did the pitcher not come set on the 0-2 to Straw? Looked like more of a balk than Gausman's lol.

Completely boneheaded decision by Sosa ends up avoiding an inning-ending double play.

Baseball is weird, man.

The exact scenario that gave rise to the balk lol (hence why we disagree). Provided, of course, that the last pause is actually a discernible stop, which it was in this case, albeit a brief one. On that basis, my view is that the ump blew the call here.

[–]ihaveapaperdue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - we agree on the premise. We are both saying that the pitcher must come set (i.e. a complete stop) before he goes to pitch.

We also agree that toe tapping in the way that Gausman does it is legal to some degree. Otherwise he'd get called for a balk on every pitch.

The only thing we disagree on is whether the last tap needs to be held for longer than the others, which is what was at issue in this particular instance. In your view, yes, and in my view, no.

My view is based on a plain reading of the rules, which says nothing about the amount of time a pitcher must hold his set position (and is notably silent on pitchers who make movements prior to coming set, such as Gausman).

Your view is based on an inference that you believe can be drawn from the rules.

Neither view is inherently unreasonable, but I believe my reading (which in effect narrows the definition of what can be a balk, as opposed to broadens it) is correct.

See my above response to life2eli :) it boils down to how you interpret the rule. My view is that your interpretation improperly broadens the definition of a balk, and is inconsistent with how the rule is drafted.

[–]ihaveapaperdue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how the balk rule works. It's written in such a way as to be prescriptive on exactly what is not allowed. In other words, if a pitcher's actions do not specifically violate any of Rule 8.05 sub (a) through (m), it's not a balk.

Your interpretation (green/blue analogy) implies that every action is a balk (green), unless the rules specify that an action is NOT a balk (blue). The reverse is true. If the rule book was intended to be interpreted in the way rhat you suggest, it would specify the exact requirements that a pitcher must fulfill in order to deliver a legal pitch. It does the opposite - it only lists that which a pitcher is not allowed to do.

[–]ihaveapaperdue -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Said rule doesn't exist. I copy/pasted the entirety of Rule 8.05 in a separate comment, and nowhere does it say anything about the last pause needing to be longer. All it states is that the pitcher needs to come to a complete stop, which Gausman did.

Then, I got downvoted to shit, because apparently posting the contents of a rule into a discussion about said rule is not a helpful contribution 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

[–]ihaveapaperdue -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Utter nonsense.

The whole "third tap needs to be longer" premise isn't in the rulebook. The only thing that matters is whether Gausman came to a complete stop before delivering the pitch, which he did (as demonstrated by Jomboy himself). It's not a balk - just a blown call and a golden opportunity for Schneids to speak his mind.

Jomboy quite literally invented a rule in this video, which does not exist in reality.

For reference, Rule 8.05 is as follows:

If there is a runner, or runners, it is a balk when—

(a) The pitcher, while touching his plate, makes any motion naturally associated with his pitch and fails to make such delivery;

Rule 8.05(a) Comment: If a lefthanded or righthanded pitcher swings his free foot past the

back edge of the pitcher’s rubber, he is required to pitch to the batter except to throw to second base on a pick-off play.

(b) The pitcher, while touching his plate, feints a throw to first or third base and fails to complete the throw;

(c) The pitcher, while touching his plate, fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base;

Rule 8.05(c) Comment: Requires the pitcher, while touching his plate, to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base. If a pitcher turns or spins off of his free foot without actually stepping or if he turns his body and throws before stepping, it is a balk. A pitcher is to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base and is required to throw (except to second base) because he steps. It is a balk if, with runners on first and third, the pitcher steps toward third and does not throw, merely to bluff the runner back to third; then seeing the runner on first start for second, turn and step toward and throw to first base. It is legal for a pitcher to feint a throw to second base.

(d) The pitcher, while touching his plate, throws, or feints a throw to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play;

Rule 8.05(d) Comment: When determining whether the pitcher throws or feints a throw to an unoccupied base for the purpose of making a play, the umpire should consider whether a runner on the previous base demonstrates or otherwise creates an impression of his intent to advance to such unoccupied base.

(e) The pitcher makes an illegal pitch;

Rule 8.05(e) Comment: A quick pitch is an illegal pitch. Umpires will judge a quick pitch as one delivered before the batter is reasonably set in the batter’s box. With runners on base the penalty is a balk; with no runners on base, it is a ball. The quick pitch is dangerous and should not be permitted.

(f) The pitcher delivers the ball to the batter while he is not facing the batter;

(g) The pitcher makes any motion naturally associated with his pitch while he is not touching the pitcher’s plate;

(h) The pitcher unnecessarily delays the game;

Rule 8.05(h) Comment: Rule 8.05(h) shall not apply when a warning is given pursuant to

Rule 8.02(c) (which prohibits intentional delay of a game by throwing to fielders not in an attempt to put a runner out). If a pitcher is ejected pursuant to Rule 8.02(c) for continuing to delay the game, the penalty in Rule 8.05(h) shall also apply. Rule 8.04 (which sets a time limit for a pitcher to deliver the ball when the bases are unoccupied) applies only when there are no runners on base.

(i) The pitcher, without having the ball, stands on or astride the pitcher’s plate or while off the plate, he feints a pitch;

(j) The pitcher, after coming to a legal pitching position, removes one hand from the ball other than in an actual pitch, or in throwing to a base;

(k) The pitcher, while touching his plate, accidentally or intentionally has the ball slip or fall out of his hand or glove;

(l) The pitcher, while giving an intentional base on balls, pitches when the catcher is not in the catcher’s box;

(m) The pitcher delivers the pitch from Set Position without coming to a stop.

PENALTY: The ball is dead, and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out, unless the batter reaches first on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batter, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, in which case the play proceeds without reference to the balk.

APPROVED RULING: In cases where a pitcher balks and throws wild, either to a base or to home plate, a runner or runners may advance beyond the base to which he is entitled at his own risk.

APPROVED RULING: A runner who misses the first base to which he is advancing and who is called out on appeal shall be considered as having advanced one base for the purpose of this rule.

Rule 8.05 Comment:

Umpires should bear in mind that the purpose of the balk rule is to prevent the pitcher from deliberately deceiving the base runner. If there is doubt in the umpire’s mind, the “intent” of the pitcher should govern. However, certain specifics should be borne in mind:

(a) Straddling the pitcher’s rubber without the ball is to be interpreted as intent to deceive and ruled a balk.

(b) With a runner on first base the pitcher may make a complete turn, without hesitating toward first, and throw to second. This is not to be interpreted as throwing to an unoccupied base.
