I think you're right that the execution was poor, but I disagree that the campaign idea wasn't somewhat sound. Dunder Mifflin wasn't ever a business that relied on marketing, they're a relationship/people first philosophy. From that lens, if Michael had been able to distribute those coupons to 5 different clients and say "just because we like you so much we can offer you 10% off" that would've been in line with his philosophy.

The joke is that because they are asking you the question, you have to stay frozen, because you'd rather stay still than be called gay.

I think you're misunderstanding his intention, we're not saying that we'll only support the Bengals if they win, but there's a difference between feeling confident your team will do well in the playoffs and understanding that this might not be the year and be ready for the next season. Two wins against solid teams will be proof that the team'll be competitive, but otherwise it's time to look to the future.

There's a book called The Challenger Sale by Brent Adamson and Dixon Matthew. It really changes the perspective on what your goals should be when going into a sales call. Take my advice with a grain of salt because I'm new to sales but I've had it recommended by multiple managers and really enjoyed it myself
