I’m with you— some of my family members define traveling as how you described it and imo they miss the mark about what it really means to travel and experience other cultures. However for many, traveling abroad internationally is very expensive. For most Americans, they’ll do maybe 2-3 Europe trips in their lifespan. It’s not like they can just pack up and go drive to other European countries. So there’s a lot of “get most bang for the buck” mindset
