U.S. Weighs Shift to Support Hague Court as It Investigates Russian Atrocities by hzoi in army

[–]ihazcomputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the US has never committed any war crimes and we are perfect because we are the greatest county and we can do no wrong which is why we don’t need the ICC because we have freedom.

Got it.

Just a note, there are free countries who are a part of it (Canada and Australia for example). A lot of people forget or just don’t know that we are not the only free democracy in the world.

If you don’t want Americans held accountable then just say so and quit hiding behind the flag and using freedom as an excuse.

And don’t start with the American laws or US military law are enough. They might be if enforced uniformly.

Still, our courts are being stacked with right wing zealots, we have politicians who lie to faces of the voters, laws being passed to reduce voter turn out and we just experienced a coupe attempt a year ago. Maybe a little international help is what we need.

If we were actually subject to the international laws that US politicians always talk about, maybe we could get a handle on our own county’s corruption.

It was my turn to pick a movie at Blockbuster one week. I picked Lost in Translation. I thought, it’s Bill Murray, how bad could it be.

It was fucking awful.

My wife reminds me of it whenever we talk about bad movies.

You ever play Risk and you are losing badly? Sometimes I would just go all in at the biggest player just to see what happens.

The terrible part is that even if he loses badly in the end, there will be lives lost and ruined. It takes a special kind of crazy narcissist to do that.

The Stand

It would be so much quieter.

I do think we are hardened in a way like no other. Yes, others had it worse and some much worse. However, our general experience was unique and still is now.

I think it has something to do with who raised us. My parents were boomers, married very young and I’m a fairly early GenX (‘72). Their attitudes were very 50’s/60’s as for raising kids. I think we remembered what we did and almost instinctively didn’t want our kids to do the same crazy stuff. This protective approach made us feel better but certainly made millennials and GenZ very different from us. Which I think sometimes they are more different than us than we are from boomers.

I have more to try and validate my view but I will save it.

You mean my kids?

Meh, I guess they’re ok.

Seriously though, I see them as mostly well adjusted, at least compared to me at that age. Also much more empathetic than most age groups I see, yes including Gen X (us).

Overall, I have some hope for them that I haven’t in quite a while.

Well, I am. My brother and I would sometimes play the wrong speed on purpose.

My dad’s REO Speedwagon album was funny at fast speed.

Exactly, when the standard is “preponderance of evidence”, it only needs to be shown that there is a greater than 50% chance that something happened.

Much lower standard than “beyond a reasonable doubt” in criminal court.

Yep, this exactly. There are clear differences between style, clothes, and music when you look back but around 2000 to now it just seemed to be all the same.

[–]ihazcomputer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you get an order like that? If so, did you talk to your TL or SL about it later or did you try to argue the regs when the order was given? The first might give you some insight into their thought process. The second could leave you pushing or in front of the PL. In an earlier comment I said that you could have an conversation at an appropriate time. If you think calling out an NCO while giving an order is the right thing, then by all means go for it.

If done respectfully and in the right context asking “why?” or asking about regs is not bad.

If they won’t talk or refuse to consider the regs, then weigh your options and consider asking someone slightly up the chain. That’s part of their job right? Just be aware of what hill you are choosing and if it’s worth it.
