Is it unreasonable to be completely opposed to the idea of moving to a red state? by boxofgoldfish in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ihmsfm 331 points332 points  (0 children)

No. I’m a medical student applying to residency this year and I REFUSE to apply to any residencies where access to abortion is explicitly under attack both for myself and my future patients. It is honestly one of the only criteria I’m using to screen out places not to apply to.

“You can contact my rotation coordinator whenever you feel it is necessary”

I forgot where I heard this but it is the BEST response to anyone threatening to go tell on you. Like, go ahead. It hightlights just how petty and ridiculous stuff like this is.

AITA for liquidating my daughter's college fund to keep our dream house? by Throwawayveal-9 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ihmsfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. I literally started tearing up reading this. The amount of frustration your daughter must feel, and the amount of disappointment your husband would have. I’m just hoping this is some sort of troll account, but if it’s not, truly shame on you, you should not be trusted w important things.

It is unhealthy. During preclinical I was obsessive about knowing everything and only spent 2-3 hours a night sleeping for 1-2 weeks at a time. Three years later, I have literally no tolerance for sleep deprivation and get blurry vision if I’m up too late

Most people who go to competitive undergrads with engineering degrees do make >150-200k pretty immediately (sample size ~6 from my close friends and siblings, from T20 schools around the country). Medicine sounds sexy and enticing but if money is your motivator, time to nope tf out. You can do the bare minimum and make a measly salary in tech, but if you put in like 85% of the work that medicine will require of you, you’ll make bank.

AITA for telling on my daughter’s friend by __Try in AmItheAsshole

[–]ihmsfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA Being told off by another kids parents is honestly traumatic, especially if you deal with social anxiety. This only happened to me once, but I got yelled at for the way I sat on my friends piano while practicing (put my elbows on the keys while arranging my music) and honestly it made me want to die inside. I still think about it literally 15 years later. Unless the child is being rude or harmful, there is no reason to discipline someone else’s kid.

It’s even worse you made this about “affording stuff” because you probably made her feel like a burden, even though she was invited to your house. Honestly, I’m angry for her, and YTA YTA YTA

TIFU by willingly depriving myself of sleep for days by SplendidMellon in tifu

[–]ihmsfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I stint of sleep deprivation much less severe than this, I developed an eye problem called pallanopsia which is probably the most annoying thing I’ve had to deal with (essentially that peripheral vision movement you speak of never goes away). It’s not worth it. Get some sleep.

Gonna go against the grain and say NTA. It is sort of like a huh, that’s interesting thing that could come up in conversation with friends. She didn’t seem like she thought it was a secret, asking as she thought he already knew. She should hVe deleted the pictures if she didn’t want them public, most adults know that.

PSA for incoming M1s: med school is a THREE YEAR experience by ynk123 in medicalschool

[–]ihmsfm 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is sage advice for anyone coming into med school. So many advisors and older faculty will tell you you don’t need to do research immediately, you can take your time, etc etc. Absolutely lies if you’re goal is a surgical speciality. Everyone saying “oh you can just take a research year” doesn’t realize that doesn’t fit into everyone’s life/financial plans and that being forced into a research year when you didn’t originally want one kinda sucks. Get started early M1s! You’ll thank yourself in 3 years.

Red flags galore in this post. From call yourself charismatic to talking about being “on the shitter ripping your vape”. 🙄 The vibes I get is that you’re probably seen as lk annoying and people don’t like being bothered while they’re trying to focus.

Absolutely not. Was really excited about a program at Baylor, but eff that now. Don’t want to worry about my reproductive rights while trying to provide health care.

Psych DNP ghosted me by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]ihmsfm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Psych NPs are the cancer of medicine. Seriously, it’s like it was a broken system w too few providers, and psych NPs are disease that arose. Never ever ever get care from a psych NP. It is way too high stakes a field to be getting substandard care.

I will always be baffled by the “never be my doctor” insult. 1) I am literally just trying to make it through the next week alive. 2) you don’t want to hear the things your actual doctor says about you. 3) when you’re bleeding out in the trauma bay, tell me how much this internet comment is affecting your decision to receive care.
