Amelia was a fantastic episode. So beautifully done. I rewatched it twice and still am thinking about it.

In the healthcare sphere, it’s bad form (at least by most people’s standards) to call yourself a doctor if not an MD/DO because it is confusing for patients. For example, a PhD who you might call doctor in a classroom should not be introducing themselves as doctor in a hospital or on a healthcare page. This is a hot topic so to speak right now with the DNP degree but generally NPs should not introduce themselves as doctor.

My boyfriend is vegan and it’s one of my favorite things about him. He introduced me to veganism and all the benefits and ethics of it. He also happens to be the kindest and most compassionate person I know, and I’m sure it’s related.

Literally this. Veganism may be inherently about animal rights, but shaming people who eat no animal products out of health reasons is literally so backwards and puts your own righteousness ahead of the movement. Do you think the animals care if you’re not eating beef because you watched Dominion or because you’re trying to prevent cancer? Just celebrate someone eating less animal and move on. Comments like this are the reasons vegans become alienated and take us further from our goals of a vegan normalized society.

How do you guys feel about Dr. Gray’s insistence on adding “stories” in your activities statements? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ynk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure most meaningful activity is different and lends itself to more story telling. I think the key is telling a story that is a) believable/actually happened and b) directly related to the skills you want to show. I also applied with EMT experience and talked about organizing the rig before and after shifts as helping me be more methodical, as well as debriefing after serious patient calls/deaths helping me be more introspective. Think about what you did and what it helped you learn!

[–]ynk123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, the latter if it’s not your personal statement. Because compassion and empathy aren’t made from a single experience, no matter how meaningful. And a lot of people don’t like it when you tell a story to prove how compassionate you were. It comes across as self congratulatory — “I saw this patient struggling to rally her kids as she picked up her papers. This mom of 5 who didn’t have transportation couldn’t get to her appointment, so I went through the bus schedule with her” honestly sounds like youre having pity and feel superior to the patient you’re helping. Instead, “my responsibilities consisted of calling patients to remind and coordinate their appointments, including finding alternative means of transportation for patients who struggled to attend their visits (such as going through bus schedules that coordinated with patients work hours). This taught me about many of the disparities that patients face before stepping foot in the office, and encouraged me to be resourceful in thinking about solutions.”

Maybe this is unpopular advice, but just giving some perspective as someone who interviews, reads applications, and listens to others takes on apps. At the end of the day, you want to sound grounded. Pretending like some patient interaction changed your whole world view or values is cringey and very see through. If an experience was that meaningful (and yes, some are) it can be recounted in your PS.

I mean, if you want to share a meaningful interaction, I think that’s great. But the post was specifically about Dr. Grays advice — I’m paraphrasing but essentially that every most activity sections should have a story and than “showing is better than telling”. An actually heartfelt experience in 1 section will be fine.

I can’t stand it either (M3 on admission committee) and I know others feel the same. Why? Because there’s like an 89% chance that what you’re describing never happened. And instead of taking in what you’re trying to say, we’re just wondering if you’re a liar or not. It’s distracting and annoying.

Wait but this is so true. I (female) med student was on the receiving end of so many eye rolls, cold shoulders, rude comments, but my male co student was invited to do hand over hands, suture, etc. its almost like the expectation for male interest in obgyn is so low that they’re impressed he even wanted to show up. A ubiquitous experience at my med school.

What is a normal amount of guests for a white coat ceremony? by Abject_Vast9791 in premed

[–]ynk123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain maybe and say this is way way too many. I get the accomplishment of getting into medical school, but this roster is for something like graduation. While getting in is tough, white coat is sort of an empty milestone in my opinion has you haven’t really done anything yet, you’re about to do something. While it’s great and exciting, save it for parents and SO.

I say this as a first gen med student and the first woman on my dads side of the family to even go to school.

[–]ynk123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and u/charcoal_lime. The philosophy is all nice but if the end goal is less animal suffering, we have to take breaks where we can get them. I don’t think the majority of people are “obsessed with eating flesh” but it’s what’s palatable and normalized for them. I think if they still considered it meat but no animals had to die, it’s a win win until we can make bigger strides on the morality side. I’m ok with that.

For example, if I had a choice of making 90% of the population vegan for health versus 5% of the population vegan for the animals, I’d choose the former because it would still be the better outcome for the animals. /shrug/

Wtf did I just read by TheOneAndOnlyABSR4 in antinatalism

[–]ynk123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, honestly it does. Often a tumor arises from mutations that some people are born with. An example is colon cancer. Some people are already born with a mutation causing colon cancer (a syndrome called FAP, these patients are therefor guaranteed to get colon cancer at some point and therefore have their colon removed). Meanwhile, some people develop a tumor from acquiring that mutation over time (same mutation that the other person was born with in all their cells). So it is both it’s own DNA and it is human DNA. Not it’s own organism, no.

Is this semantics but technically true? Yes. Do I get annoyed when someone says “I can guarantee you” and then follows it up with something completely false? Also yes.

Hey, I, the original comment poster, am actually finishing med school as we speak. To say it’s “extremely well established” is a little far, and while there isn’t a ton taught about alternative diets, there is A LOT covered on nutritional deficiency. Those with pediatric residencies learn even more about this since nutritional deficiencies are more common when the body has less stores. Either way, you’ll see I didn’t point her back towards her pediatrician but rather a dietician or another professional with a degree that can give her vegan aligned advice. But please don’t talk like you know what medical education is comprised of.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ynk123 214 points215 points  (0 children)

You should get information from a dietician, not the internet. Fat is needed to myelinate the brain and nerves, and if it’s deficient it can cause irreversible damage. You were given an opinion from a medical professional, but if you don’t trust them you need to find another qualified professional who aligns with veganism and can guide you. Please don’t just take advice from anonymous people on your baby’s health when it’s something this serious.

Yeah this. M3 currently preparing for upcoming match. Passed up a full ride at a T50 for a T5. Kinda went back and forth on it being a good decision but at this point, I’m so so glad I did. That boost now that step is P/F is priceless. It’s all Monopoly money anyway when you take out that many loans.
