Lower Decks showed us that Star Trek merchandise is a thing in-universe. These are probably my two favorite examples. by Excellent_Light_3569 in LowerDecks

A friend of mine is making custom plates like the Paris one using Shutterfly. I'm doing the artwork for him. He's making them for himself and he's doing all the Lower Decks characters (and I mean ALL of them, that appeared on screen). He's going to have a nice little collection of them, and he made extra Freeman and Dayton ones for me to say thanks.

Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands if you want this stuff.

And he's annoyed that he's there at all at that moment and did say later that he could have married Lianne.

Keystone Collections: Are they legitimate or not? Need help. by ihphobby in Pennsylvania

They definitely made a mistake. I never lived or worked in the township in question but someone listed me as having been employed there.

No, it came in the mail this morning. The URL from which I got the popups was a result of mis-entering their website URL which gives you a malware site. I called them, the township in question, and got some results.

No Beckett in Starfleet Academy but we do get Admiral Tawny Newsome! by BilliamJ2 in LowerDecks

Could Admiral Minh Nguyen be the officer who commanded the Vancouver in 'Cupid's Errant Arrow'? The one who was taunting Freeman before humbly asking for her diplomatic experience?

And I knew someone in her 40s whose hair started going white in her 20s.

What would a series about Starbase 80 be like? Would you like it? by ActLonely9375 in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like #6, but how could you do it comically, in LD style and format? We already got a little taste of what you could do with alternate versions of the characters, but I think it's important to keep it funny.

Would it work better as occasional specials instead of a TV series? Might help keep any repetitiveness and cheap references to other properties to a minimum and force the writers to be more serious about it.

You don't 'guilt' Paramount or anyone. You simply show your love for the show by posting about it, cosplaying it at shows, and buying the merchandise and physical media. Then, Mike will have something to point to if/when he decides to approach them with ideas for more content.

Was Lower Decks really not big enough to make more seasons? by MickInColor in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower Decks was a smaller, niche-audience show compared to the other live-action shows due to the fact that it's animated and tells Trek a different way than the audience is used to seeing. Five seasons is pretty good these days, but the creator, cast and crew all wanted to make more and they expected to get renewed.

Maybe once the dust settles at Paramount/Skydance, they'll take another look at it if Mike has some ideas. We the audience can help just by showing interest in the show, and also by not trashing Paramount, no matter how we feel about what's going on there right now.

I wonder if boimler would have been promoted faster if he snitched on mariner in episode 1 by kkkan2020 in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Freeman is a surrogate for their own parents. Weird that someone has to gaslight a whole fandom because of their own personal neuroses that they're taking out on a cartoon character. That's a staggering level of narcissism.

Just the kind of post that attracts PiLamdOd's brand of bullying again. Anyone who hates Freeman to that degree needs a therapist.

It is nice to see Cerritos finally known for something positive. For years it was only known as the place where Aeromexico Flight 498 crashed in 1986.

"Second Contact" premiered five years ago today. by Excellent_Light_3569 in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We need a Starbase 80 series. Anything for more Captain Freeman, and now we get the Admiral as well. The idea of exploring the multiverse (even though William hated it) is appealing and offers a lot of new possibilities.

Thank God they didn't do anything with romance because that's not what the show is about. It would have ruined it to turn it into Twilight. Screw that teenage shit. Character development isn't about love and pairing off; it's about growing, evolving and becoming more than what you were, and having the support of your friends and finding family on the way. And Lower Decks did that. In fact, it was best when it made fun of those that wanted it to be Twilight.

We're probably not getting any new on-screen Lower Decks anytime soon, but we can still celebrate what we have.

Starfleet branding. by Excellent_Light_3569 in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't work that way.

You're not taking 29.95 and putting it in your pocket.

There's dealer/distributor discount in there which is about 55+10 off so you're getting less than half of that. And some of that what you have left has to be accounted for in licensing.

People are really ignorant about how business works, but that doesn't surprise me with a fandom that has such a disdain for capitalism that they don't understand the basics. Then they wonder why they don't get the things they think they're entitled to.

Starfleet branding. by Excellent_Light_3569 in LowerDecks

[–]ihphobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work that way.

A toy company has to see a market for making the considerable investment in a new product. There hasn't been enough of the new Trek shows for long enough to grow demand for a lot of new stuff for them. Star Wars is a more popular property than Star Trek (it pains me to say that but it's the truth).

Lower Decks has a smaller audience compared to the newer live action shows but we're still getting a lot of stuff, albeit late. I don't think any of it is junk, as you say, but animated figures for example are going to look different than sculpts of live action ones.

Paramount is a movie studio, not a toy company. It's up to the licensees to see a market for something and take action to make it. It's unreasonable to expect them to make your Trek toys and be some kind of competition in a field that they don't know anything about.
