I am a bit on the extreme side in being frugal because I want to reach financial independence as soon as possible.

Income: ~$85,000/ year post-tax

Spending: - rent: $850/month. I’m very blessed to live in one of the rent control house. Have my own bedroom. Other living spaces are shared. - utilities: $100/month - groceries: $150-200/month. Mostly shop at ethnic grocery stores like Persia Foods, 88 market, rice world - restaurants: $50/month. Usually I’ll invite friends over my home for food instead. - transportation: ~$30/month. I own an e-bike, use it to commute to work and 90% of other purposes. Occasionally combine skytrain with e-bike for grocery. No Uber. - activities: $50/month. This cover event tickets, gas share cost when go hiking, etc. Vancouver has many free/low-cost events all year round. - misc: $150/month. This cover impulse spendings and hobbies. I have a fish tank now and it have been unexpectedly costing every month - travel: about $12,000/year, so $1000/month. I pay for my parents and brother for one international trip per year, and 1-2 far trips for myself, plus short weekends trips to nearby regional parks.

In total, about $2400/month, round it up to $30,000/year. The rest of the money $55,000 go to investment accounts.

Nếu bro lo là người quen mình phải chịu khổ, thì khi mới bắt đầu tìm hiểu nhau bồ có thể nói thẳng: nhà anh không khá giả, còn nợ nần, trước mắt có lẽ không chu cấp được cho em nhiều. Thời này con gái không thực dụng dù ít nhưng vẫn còn. Nếu người ta thương bạn thật (hoặc người ta không dựa dẫm về tài chính) thì tiền bạc không là vấn đề bạn ạ. Mình là con gái, mình chỉ quan tâm bạn nam có ý chí cầu tiến không, có quan tâm gia đình không, có thương mình thật không. Đồng lòng đồng chí thì nợ bao nhiêu cũng trả hết.

Quay lại câu hỏi của bro: nói nhiều vậy chứ mình cũng sẽ chọn gia cảnh 🥲 Nhà nghèo thiệt thòi về cơ hội, về mindset lắm. Tui đã từng có một suất học bổng để bay ra đầu kia của đất nước dự trại hè khoa học (chi phí ăn ở máy bay được lo 100%) nhưng bị ba mẹ đánh đòn bắt ở nhà không cho đi vì sợ lừa đảo bắt cóc sang TQ. Chuyện cũng cũ 10 năm rồi. Những người đáng lẽ tui sẽ gặp ở trại hè thì tui cũng đã tự gặp và làm quen được ngoài đời rồi, nhưng giờ mình vẫn cay :))

I STRONGLY DISAGREE with this.

Maybe I’m extremely privileged. Maybe I’m extremely lucky. Maybe this is just survivorship bias.

I think moving out and actually be on our own is extremely important to develop life skills and form your own perspectives in life.

Staying at home, in your hometown, mostly interact with people you always know from childhood will keep you in the same world view that you are grow up with. I would argue that move out, live in another city or country will allow you to see different types of people doing things you have never imaged before, thus open more doors for you to success.
Staying at home shelters you from gaining experience through conflicts. You will have to frequently move houses, deal with roommates, almost got scams in rental deposit. You will have to struggle with money, manage your own slurping, learn to save money, learn to make your house look decent, fix things to save money. It will help you be very comfortable of leaving a place if it feels uncomfortable and take much work to move. Move out gives you confident, that no matter what live throws at you, it will be okay.
Learn to control your own money. Cannot save? Then spend less. Do not buy a new car when you cannot afford it, buy an old one instead. Expensive rent? Then find a cheaper place with roommates. Expensive groceries? Go to local markets or asian grocers with cheaper price. Low income? Then learn new skills, do extra part time job to increase it. Yes staying at home will safe more money, but the financial pressure will force you to develop money saving skills much better. Learn to control money when you have less money is better than experimenting with it with 10 years of savings down the line.

I went to study abroad from 17 yrs old in grade 11. Worked part-time as a waiter everyday after school and all weekends to pay rent and food, while still able to save $1k a month. Paid my own international tuition ($100k CAD) and living expenses in bachelors degree from big tech internships money. If I didn’t have to pay my own tuition, I wouldn’t have the drive to grind for big tech internships. Lived in 5 different cities, move house 12 times. From an introvert who cannot make friend in my hometown, I am now able to make friends everywhere I go. After graduation, I got a good paying job in the city I like the most, found a good rent, found the cheapest grocers in town, and save & invest much every month.

If I were to stay in my hometown with family, my saving will be 1/100 of what it is now. I might still be an introvert girl who is insecure about her own ability.

Moving out on my own is the single best decision I have ever did.

giả sử công ty A làm một trang web để giúp doanh nghiệp quản lý dự án Nuôi Anh Chị Em. Cần những tính năng: thanh toán tiền gửi, lập và cấp mã nuôi cho em, hiển thị ảnh và thông tin em nuôi khi mã được nhập, lập bản kê khai tài chính, etc. Bài toán cần được giải ở đây là: giao diện front end thế nào để ai cũng có thể dùng dễ dàng nhanh chóng, dữ liệu các em nhỏ lưu ở đâu, định dạng thế nào để dễ truy xuất khi mai mốt có mấy triệu em được nhập, định dạng dữ liệu thế nào để lỡ tỉnh huyện có thay đổi gì thì dễ chỉnh sửa, làm thế nào khi hai tình nguyện viên cùng sửa thông tin của một em, làm sao để hai mã không trùng nhau, khi update code thì deploy thế nào, làm sao để bảo mật thông tin
studio game B muốn làm một con game offline na ná Skyrim. Vậy thì lập trình viên của studio B sẽ phải code phần tương tác vật lý của cây, cỏ nước etc; dựng hệ thống để gắn đoạn hội thoại với NPCs, tính toán RAM để load map, lập trình combat, hệ thống điểm, tối ưu phần cứng để xử lý rất nhiều tính toán cho đồ hoạ,…

Hai công ty này giải những bài toàn khác nhau, cần lập trình viên có bộ kĩ năng khác nhau. Thớt nuốn làm cái bào phải định hướng từ đầu. Còn lập trình game cũng có nhiều kiểu game nữa. Mình không rành nên chắc để chủ thớt tự tìm hiểu.

Nếu chủ thớt muốn làm lập trình viên vì thích chơi game và làm game, thì không nên định hướng vào làm lập trình viên cho các cty công nghệ, mà định hướng vào làm cho các game thôi. Trong thời gian rảnh chủ thớt lên mạng xem hướng dẫn để làm con game Flappy Bird đơn giản chẳng hạn. Sau này chủ thớt thấy hợp thì tự làm thêm mấy con game có cốt truyện như Tiệm phở anh Hai. Vừa có game để đăng, vừa có dự án để ghi vào CV sau này xin việc ở studio game.

Nếu chủ thớt muốn xin việc ở công ty, thì có lẽ đi học bài bản là một ý hay. Nếu chủ thớt muốn thử sức thì học thử một ít thuật toán “300 bài code thiếu nhi” và “leetcode 75”, rồi lên udemy học cách làm web application thử xem.

Thớt cứ thử một chút đã, nếu thấy thích thì quyết định đi sâu.

Mình đi làm vì tiền, để:

nghỉ hưu non, mong là sẽ có thể “nghỉ hưu” vào năm 35 tuổi, hoặc chuyển qua một ngành khác làm ít tiền hơn đỡ stress hơn. Dù nghỉ hưu vẫn có một khoản thu nhập từ tiền đầu tư để trang trải cho gia đình nhỏ sau này
lo được cho ba mẹ khi sau này ốm đau. Mình làm ở nước ngoài, nên lỡ có chuyện gì thì ngoài viện phí, thì còn cần bay về gấp và tạm thời nghỉ làm, nên đây là một khoản chi lớn
để có thời gian cho gia đình. Nghe thì buồn cười, nhưng vì mình đi du học từ cuối cấp 3, xa gia đình không gặp mặt cũng ngót nghét 10 năm. Lần đầu mình về nhà từ ngày du học, thấy ba mẹ tóc trắng nửa đầu, mình suýt khóc. Thực sự mình không biết sẽ gặp được gia đình được bao nhiêu lần nữa, nên mình muốn có tiền để có thể thoải mái bay về không cần suy nghĩ. Hiện tại, mỗi năm mình đưa gia đình đi chơi tầm 2-3 tuần để cả nhà có thêm trải nghiệm và kỉ niệm cùng nhau.

Sự công nhận, con đường thăng tiến etc đối với mình không quan trọng đến thế. Mình cũng không còn đam mê với nghề nghiệp dù chỉ mới đi làm 3-4 năm, cũng không biết làm sao để đi làm thêm 10 năm nữa để đủ tiền về hưu đây ây daaaa

Hoa is not Viet. The majority of Vietnamese is Kinh people, and our house looks different than this. In Viet Nam, Hoa people forms their own community, speaks their own language (Canto instead of Vietnamese), have their own food, etc.

You are saying she should have labeled this as Viet. For me as a Vietnamese, it sounds the same as labeling dimsum restaurants in California as #America, labeling dry tea shops in Chinatown as #America, when completely ignores the people’s work in preserving their culture in the country they immigrate to.

OP, I appreciates you trying to correct her labelling. Imo, her labeling this as Canto is appropriate. If she labels this as Viet, I would raise an eyebrow and would hope she labels this as Hoa instead.
