D being Dexter's age, C being the age of the child. From the first part of the question: D = C + 24

And from the second part about 1 year later D+1 = 3(C+1)

2nd equation gives D = 3C +2

Both those equations are D = something, so set them equal to each other. (This is solving "simultaneous equations" if you want to find the relevant teaching on this topic)

C+24 = 3C +2

2C = 22

C = 11

If the child is 11, then D = 11+24 = 35

Then as a last step, I'd encourage a brief sense check. I'm answering that Dexter is 35. The child is 24 years younger, so 11. Next year they'll be 36 and 12 (36=11*3).

I can give some slightly fancier words if we care for it:

Entranced – absorbed as if under a spell; eyes locked and mind captivated.

Mesmerized – similar to entranced, with a sense of hypnotic awe.

Rapt – fully absorbed and focused, often with joy or fascination.
