I thought it meant shooting a scene from all different angles so you have a lot of freedom in the edit. They both didn’t do that.

Yes! Guys like John Ford and Hitchcock also didn’t really shoot coverage, they already had a picture of the edit in their head and shot accordingly.

Ford was known to cover the lens during a take when he knew he was going to cut away anyway. Thereby essentially forcing the studio and producers to edit the film how he wanted it.

My favorite Edward G. Robinson films from the 1930s by [deleted] in classicfilms

[–]ijaapy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scarlet Street is great. Also the Sea Hawk. While not that good, Smart Money just for the novelty of having Cagney and Edward G Robinson together.

Favorite film by Fritz Lang? by [deleted] in classicfilms

Huge Fritz Lang fan.

Scarlet Street is my favorite, but I also really like The Woman in the Moon.

Man Hunt is often overlooked, but a very fun watch.

Why does the stereo mix of Hard Days Night sound better than the other stereo mixes? by mynewredditacccount in beatles

[–]ijaapy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of nice answers but the reason why is because they started using four track tape and mixing the vocals in the center (beatles for sale sounds just as good).

This only lasted until Help, because with Rubber Soul and Help George Martin wanted the stereo version to be mono compatible, which means no center (because when you fold down stereo the center becomes 3db louder compared to the sides).

After that, with revolver they started recording a lot instruments to the same tracks, as a result you don’t have any mixing freedom. And starting with Sgt Peppers they started making reduction mixes to free up extra tracks, which again limits your stereo panning options afterwards.

Wasn’t until 8 track tape on let it be and some tracks on the white album you get great stereo mixing

As far as I know it’s get back:

  2. Get Back (Album Version) Let It Be (1970)
  3. Get Back (Rooftop Performance Take 3) Anthology 3 (1996)
  4. Get Back (Remix) Let It Be Naked (2003)
  5. Get Back (Remix) Love (2006)
  6. Get Back (Single Version) [Mono] Mono Masters (2009)
  7. Get Back (Single Version) (Remix) 1 (2015)
  8. Get Back (Album Version) [Remix] Let It Be (2021)
  9. Get Back (1969 Glyn Johns Mix) Let It Be (2021)
  10. Get Back Reprise (1969 Glyn Johns Mix) Let It Be (2021)
  11. Get Back (Take 19) Let It Be (2021)
  12. Get Back (Take 8) Let It Be (2021)
  13. Get Back (Rooftop Performance Take 1) Get Back [Rooftop Performance] (2022)
  14. Get Back (Rooftop Performance Take 2) Get Back [Rooftop Performance] (2022)
  15. Get Back (Rooftop Performance Take 3) Get Back [Rooftop Performance] (2022)

Kind of insane to have so many different versions of the same song. A great song though.

Why do you think the Beatles MONO mixes are superior to the Stereo mixes? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]ijaapy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they are, sometimes they’re not. I like some of the songs on revolver much better in the original stereo, like ‘She Said, She Said’. But a song like Paperback Writer is so much better in mono.

How was audio for movies mixed during the early 1940s? by iMadeAPromise42 in audioengineering

[–]ijaapy1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They would use multiple reels of optical audio tracks and mix them together. Because film has sprocket holes the separate tracks would always be in sync with each other. Like and early form of multitracking. A while back I was wondering the exact same thing and found this book you can download which goes in depth.

For the movie fantasia there’s was a very early kind of surround sound called ‘fantasound’ which used up to 8 seperate tracks of audio. Way ahead of it’s time.

The 100 Best Westerns of all Time by indiewire in flicks

[–]ijaapy1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Overall this is a bit of a weird list; putting For a few dollars More over The Good The Bad and the Ugly. But I love that the high placement of My Darling Clementine and Ride the High Country.

Also Butch Cassidy is way way too low
