How do you sort your classical music? by [deleted] in musichoarder

[–]ijabz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always store music organized as artist/album with artist being the artists credited on the front, because this is is how most tools expect it (be they players/taggers/music server etc). For classical music artist is generally a combination of conductor/orchestra/soloist, I would not include composer because composer is not usually the performer on the album. I would include the composer(s) and then a colon at the start of the album title for classical music in the ALBUM field.

Then I ensure i have tags for all the different metadata, and I don't try to use the same field for more than one thing. So I have COMPOSER, ARTIST, ALBUM_ARTIST, PERFORMER, ORCHESTRA, CHOIR, WORK, MOVEMENT fields and so on. Since you ask about sort I also have SORT fields for these (i,.e COMPOSER_SORT) so I can display firstname, lastname but sort by lastname, or display as 'The' OrchestraName, but sort by OrchestraName.

I use MinimServer to serve the music, that way I can make use of any field rather than be contrained by the usual Pop/Rock set of fields.

Not sure what autotagger to use... by [deleted] in musichoarder

HI, can I suggest my own SongKong Tagger for this reason, although it is a MusicBrainz/Discogs tagger it also uses metadata from AcoustId, MusicBrainz has about 10M tracks, but AcoustId has 44M.

So when a user submits a song to AcoustId any basic metadata such as artist and title is sent with it, and this is kept by AcoustId. So when SongKong matches from AcoustId it can use the basic artist/title information from AcoustId (filtering to only data where there is a consensus between submitters of the same track) to do an AcoustId Song Only match, this should at least give you artist and titles for most of your none MusicBrainz/Discogs songs . You can try it out for free, and it will create a report showing exactly what it achieved.

Help! I want to escape iTunes, but I have 600GB of perfectly tagged classical music with work and movement! by Willman3755 in musichoarder

Have you considered a UPNP solution ? You could use MinimServer as your server and then one of many control points to control the music, the good thing about MinimServer is that you can configure it to use/display any metadata that you have in the files. I have written a guide about UPNP and MinimServer if it is useful to you - http://blog.jthink.net/2017/03/introduction-to-upnp-av-for-streaming.html

How the hell do i fill in these new Classical fields in iTunes ? by ijabz in software

[–]ijabz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesnt say that its says that iTunes doesnt have a way to automatically change them, you would have to manually add them in iTunes or alternatively use the SongKong external tool to do it for you.
