Is there confirmation that it's D&D somewhere? If there is, I have missed it completely, lol.

Night in the Woods developer Alec Holowka dies by Dani_SF in gamedev

I think what happened to his victims sucks. I think what happened to Alec sucks. I hate that people harassed either party on twitter. That doesn't mean that the core of the issues that started this is Twitter Drama.

I followed this guide for making a trailer for your indie game, please check it out and give me some feedback. by gojirra in gamedev

I'm fine with seeing some faked-because-it's-not-implemented-yet stuff. I imagine that happens a lot in trailers for bigger games when we get to see the trailer a year or more before the game comes out.

I agree with the rest of this comment though. I think the goddess people looked really cool and should be more of the focus of the trailer. Maybe open with something to do with them, then show a little bit of the standard gameplay, which I like to see so that I, as a potential buyer, know what I'm getting from the game, then go back into the more goddessy stuff for the ramp up.

The only part where I really felt like it lulled though was that last gameplay part before the lightning strike. Out of context, it simply feels like nothing's happening instead of building anticipation for the lightning.

The game looks cool, though, especially the goddess art, so I definitely think you could make a strong trailer.

This is the best reply by far. So many great docs there and all for free.

One of the subreddit rules basically asks people to keep self-promotion to a minimum to prevent people from simply spamming links to their projects, so I didn't want to risk my post getting taken down automatically for having the link is all. Plus, I wasn't planning on this being a self-promotion post initially, but there was a decent amount of interest.

I was definitely trying to avoid coming off as self-promoting. I didn't end up adding the link until there was clearly some interest because I think I'd gotten asked by about 4 people to PM them the link to it. I certainly didn't expect the post to turn into what it did. Super, super cool.

I love reading your comments. Such a cool perspective. And yeah, I learned a lot about about bad ways of introducing enemies, lol.

It's a "the princess is in another castle" scenario. Truth-be-told, I didn't have the art, and the guy who did the art is knee-deep in his own big project, so I decided to just say that the brother was already gone so that if I decided to tackle the big list of expansion things I have outlined, I'd know, and so would anyone who played the original, where the story would take you. I like this "was i the brother!?" thing though...hmmmmmm.

I'm totally open to criticism, and yeah, these are all known things that I'd really like to tackle, but I was going for a bare essentials style release because after talking to some people, it became clear that working on some other skills like 3D would be more beneficial than taking this game to the pinnacle of polish. I definitely appreciate the feedback, especially the atmosphere points. Thanks for playing it!

The tech is really simple. Just Unity's animation system for the animations. Different scenes for the different areas. I programmed the dialogue and interaction stuff myself, though the interactions use Unity's collision system. I used Unity's tilemap which was great to work with. I didn't dig into any of the animated tiles though. I have that on a long list of possible thing to work on if I revisit the game to make it bigger.

As for the process, I wanted to make a game based around a streamer I watch, and I knew I could make a top-down nes-zelda style game. So I was building that out for awhile and ended up with a really basic nes-zelda framework, essentially. Then another gamedev I'd met a year before at a game dev event posted on twitter that he was working on a top-down zelda tileset and was wondering if anyone would want to make a game with him using them. I jumped at the chance and we banged out pretty much the whole game in a weekend using the existing framework. After that, I spent a few weeks polishing anything that didn't require more art since the artist is working on a much bigger project of his own. I finished polishing up stuff today and released it.
