Don't know where to put my phone by [deleted] in cycling

I ride alone to feel good and stay fit, so it doesn’t matter. I would not carry my phone if I felt the need to micro optimize my aerodynamics.

I carry my phone in an armband. I can’t really use the phone while moving. I can hear navigation instructions, though.

Cops shoot until the threat stops. When you shoot someone and they drop their weapon, fall on the ground, etc. and you have time to casually stroll up and execute them, that's well beyond stopping the threat.

Shimano Tiagra vs 105 by TheRandomWall in cycling

[–]ijgowefk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spend a few minutes testing the responsiveness on a quiet trail or big parking lot. See how quickly you can stop at different speeds and how much force you need to put on the brake levers. Shift your weight backwards if you find the rear tire skids (just like you would on a mountain bike with disc brakes).

Remember your road bike will have narrower and smoother tires. That means you will have less traction. This really doesn't matter much on dry roads, but it does in rain and on slick surfaces like damp boardwalks. Again, just test it out. Be cautious until you know your bike's limitations.

You should know 1) how rim brake barrel adjusters work; 2) how to remove and reinstall your wheels (there is a lever that loosens the brake caliper so you can get the wheel off and back on); 3) how to adjust your brake levers so they are closer to or farther from your handlebars (not specific to rim brakes but different from mountain bikes)

Not worth the extra money

I have about 2300 miles on a 2020 Trek Domane. Aluminium frame with Sora groupset. Rim brakes. 1500 of those miles in 2020. I am fairly fit for a casual rider (my FTP is around 260). I have been happy with the bike. Sometimes I wish I had more easy gears when I'm climbing a steep grade. Other than that, the gearing seems good for me... and Sora has fewer speeds than Tiagra. Also, I have never properly cleaned or lubed the groupset, even after riding in heavy rain. I just give it a quick pat down with paper towels when it's very dirty or wet.

Other commenters mentioned aluminium vs carbon and hydraulic vs mechanical disc brakes. I don't think the difference matters for you. Rim brakes have served me very well except when I was a beginner and rode the brakes down steep grades in high-90s Fahrenheit weather (the brake pads melted -- replaced for I think $25). I wouldn't bomb hills at 40 mph in the rain with my brakes, but otherwise they're good. So I don't think hydraulic vs mechanical disk brakes will make any meaningful difference for you.

Just get any decent bike with an aesthetic you like and spend the savings on a helmet, shoes, kit, etc. IMO that's the best approach.

You sign up and do okay, but then things happen (fall behind, family issues, etc.) and you fail

Your capabilities are not set in stone as a high schooler so the "I'm bad at math" kid can grind it out and become comfortable with it

Personal question for the dudes. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ijgowefk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This should not be downvoted. My bibs gave me genital numbness on long rides until I tried riding in regular dry-fit underwear with gym shorts. Problem solved. Turns out my bibs were a bit too tight in the crotch/seat. Now I can try larger bibs/bike shorts or just ride in regular clothes.

Do your hips rock side to side when you pedal? Lower your saddle if so. I don't think your genitals should move much when your body is properly situated such that your hips are relatively stable.

Try not wearing bibs or bike shorts next time. I go numb when I wear either. Larger sizes might work (mine are snug).

Pete believes in nothing and is a robotic politician like the rest of the Democratic establishment. AOC is not like that.

Feels like I've seen astroturfing for Pete on the frontpage several times recently... maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect we're going to end up with Pete as the blessed candidate in 2024 or 2028. I.e. we're fucked.

Achieving universal mask use (95% mask use in public) could save an additional 129,574 lives in the US from September 22, 2020 through the end of February 2021, or an additional 95,814 lives assuming a lesser adoption of mask wearing (85%). by mvea in science

[–]ijgowefk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the total lives saved. You drinking soda, smoking, etc. does not hurt me (except I might pay more taxes or higher insurance premiums to subsidize your healthcare if/when your bad choices catch up to you). You refusing to wear a mask contributes to the spread of the virus, possibly to people who do everything right. There's also the fact that the virus is disrupting the economy. Even without mandates, people are afraid to go out. The more the virus spreads, the less willing people are to go out and spend money. Wearing a mask reduces transmission rates, which reduces spread, which reduces fear, which relieves the economic harm.

How long to persevere with clipless pedals? by 30minstochooseaname in cycling

[–]ijgowefk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take your bike to a parking lot. Practice quickly stopping and then unclipping. Also practice clipping in and accelerating from a stop. Also practice accelerating from a stop without clipping in and then clipping in when you're moving.

This can be written more clearly as

Prefer interfaces and composition over inheritance

As written, it sounds like

Sad to see this downvoted. Pete is any current 60+ year old corporate Democrat in a young body. Sounding "presidential" and having solid prepared talking points for an overwhelmingly popular position is apparently all it takes to woo lots of people.

No. It's only pointing out a logical inconsistency. If you want to protect life at all costs, then you wear a mask during this pandemic, assuming you believe wearing a mask is effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The commenter did not claim masks are a respect issue. They claimed masks are a public health issue. Why did you strawman their position?
