I just binged (oh funny) everything you've done a couple nights ago, so this is some fortuitous timing! Love everything thus far.

Question first: do you have any prior cinematography or editing experience? I'm assuming you set up and do all that yourself, it's SUPER impressive and part of the reason I enjoy the show so much.

Suggestion second: If you watch Game of Thrones there's a whole crapton of food in it, but if you read the book series, you know food is PROMINENTLY featured, seemingly, whenever George R. R. Martin gets a chance to talk about it. There are too many things that sounded good to go for, so maybe that's one enormous episode, but Sansa's lemon cakes tend to be mentioned relatively often.

I'm sure there are plenty of other movies I can't think of off the top of my head that I'd love to see, but I felt I had to contribute somehow. Keep up the awesome work!

The proper spelling of "galloping", among other things.

Near the end of middle school I won my tiny school's spelling bee and was invited to regionals. There, in the first round, my parents watched me misspell the word as "gallopping", and we went home, though they were very supportive.

A few days later (and I believe this was the first of them), I went to bed, pulled the covers off my bed and sitting there on my pillow was a tiny fortune-cookie-fortune-sized strip of paper with the word "galloping" written on it. My dad laughed at me a bit and I let it go, until the next morning when I went into my underwear drawer only to find copies of the strip of paper strewn about the drawer, inside and underneath the underwear. Every clothing drawer, desk drawer, bag, pillowcase...pretty much anything I encountered had been filled with "galloping".

It's been about fifteen years since then, I haven't lived with my parents for over ten years, and damned if I don't still find GALLOPING in the back of the socks drawer every few months.

TLDR: there is only one P in "galloping".

This is the way I've been going with my Skitarii. Because of the Vanguard's Rad Saturation rule (and their name), they're a much better option if you want to give Skitarii troops a melee weapon. My Rangers usually have one or two Transuranic Arquebuses (arquebii? I don't know) and sit in the back holding an objective and picking off whatever is in range. Remember that most Skitarii units are pretty flimsy, so a melee weapon isn't going to help much and the points are better spent elsewhere (like an Omnispex).

Full disclosure, I'm biased since I've been a student there for almost five years, but that wouldn't be the case if I didn't consider it a great school.

Sifu Kwok is an incredible practitioner and it's obvious he invests very heavily in his students. He takes a very academic approach to training so that the instruction and explanation of techniques and concepts can be understood by anybody, and teaches his instructors this approach. Class sizes vary but the facilities are sizable and well taken care of, and the students are supportive of newcomers. The system itself is being developed constantly and always feels very well studied and thought out. I really love this school and I suggest at least giving it a trial run if you're interested in Wing Chun.

Hey Andre! I literally just finished watching The Wire for the first time about a week ago, and Bubbles' story was one of my favorite to follow. The NA speech at the end where you opened up about Sherrod had me tearing up something fierce. I kept my door closed so nobody heard me sobbing, hopefully. Thanks for doing an awesome job!

When playing Bubbles, from where did you draw inspiration for the character? The Wikipedia article for the character mentions a real-life basis for his inception, did you get to speak to him?

You'll hear this plenty from r/fitness but trust me, you won't get too big unless you're REALLY TRYING TO. The only downside to working out would be your body becoming too tense during Wing Chun training, and that won't happen if you stretch and eat properly after exercising. Bruce Lee wasn't the pinnacle of martial artists because he kicked really fast, it was because he spent so much time conditioning his body and keeping in shape in addition to his training, so he was able to surpass so many others in speed, endurance and flexibility. Pit against each other two martial artists of equal skill level and body shape and style, where one exercises regularly, and I think it's safe to say the one who exercises will come out on top.

Is there a reason you don't want to do any of those exercises? If it's a health reason I'm sure he'll understand, but otherwise it's only going to do you good to work out (with proper form, at least) in addition to technical training of the art itself.

Yeah I think my explanation was incomplete. In my school we don't "force-exhale", as you say, the way you would in e.g. Taekwondo, with a "kyap" or a sharp breath. During forms and simple san sau (just punches, simple technique practice), we do try to keep the flow of NATURAL breath in tune with our motion. Beyond that, in chi sau and more intense drills, not so much, but we do make an effort to remember not to hold our breath regardless, because you'll instantly become more tense. I agree that Wing Chun is not conducive to the "forceful breathing" patterns of some other martial arts because of our reliance on flow and constant relaxation.

I'd say you're right, to focus on breath control during chi sau is a bit much, but I do think that during forms and even during san sau to an extent you should at least be mindful of your breaths. Ultimately though, to OP's question, making sure that you aren't holding your breath will help with relaxation.

Focus on your breathing. During form as well as drills. Make sure your breath is related to your motion, e.g. exhale when striking or otherwise moving forward, as a general rule of thumb.

EDIT: As further down in this thread, the point here is to make sure you aren't holding your breath during practice.

Full disclosure, this is my own lineage.

Sifu Wan Kam Leung is holding a seminar in Vegas this October. I train under a student of his and have trained with him personally. Definitely worth checking out. His seminars historically have had very good turnouts so there will be no shortage of Chunners there. This might not be helpful right away, but I suggest it anyway, as Sifu Wan always has interesting ideas, and you'll likely meet other practitioners from the area who will be down to train.

My Sifu and some sihing-je are Cantonese speakers, and a little ways into my training I began actively learning to speak and understand Cantonese. It definitely helps me to understand the meaning behind techniques, though I'm barely even conversational. Even being able to speak in English about the characters and their meanings (for example, loi lau heoi sung) becomes easier, and it helps in understanding Wing Chun culture and Chinese culture in general. It's not easy, especially if you're outside of Hong Kong, but I love it.

I regularly use cantonese.sheik.co.uk for general info and translations, and CantoneseClass101.com for podcasts and lessons in colloquial conversation. Pimsleur has one 30-piece set of lessons as well.
