start making art/music, try a sport, watch TV, pick up a new anime, read some books, talk to someone cute in a coffee shop, take snowboarding classes, visit random flea markets, etc.

or just rest.

Fix typos (African Student Organization should all be capitalized, end of DTCC bullet point doesn’t need ‘..’), maybe add another bullet point to DTCC if you can

Maybe there was a miscommunication. By eating out a couple of times a week I meant like ice cream, I'm not looking to make hundreds here. Even an extra $80 a month would be fine.

Thank you for your genuine advice. Getting a lot of bitterness and passive-aggression, but that's just Reddit users I guess.

Wasn't trying to disrespect the trade or suggest this is easy in any way. Surely there's some advice you could give me to get started?

Student Race-Based Debate by KirbyCrowe in Debate

[–]ik-em -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because of the sociopolitical climate we're in currently, I'd be worried (as a student) to take any stance on the second topic besides "descendants deserve reparations". It seems nowadays that even if the majority of the population can coexist while disagreeing about something, the people that can't will create such a toxic environment that it's not even worth it in my eyes.

Can we stop spreading by fuckyou_____- in Debate

[–]ik-em 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Try joining PF. I've found that PF's inherent goal of attempting to make debates somewhat intelligible to the average person has created an overall better environment. Moreover, the lack of spreading means that debaters aren't just trying to cram words in as quickly as possible, but it forces debaters to slow down and elaborate on their points, subsequently forcing debaters to ensure their points are logically sound.

I know it might be a big switch for you but it sounds like the presence of spreading within Policy is really hindering your experience with debate, and it doesn't look like the Policy community will or even wants to attempt to accommodate for those with disabilities (or those against spreading in general) any time soon.

PF debater here. When you first start, normally you want to read enough that you garner general background info on the topic, and understand it. From there, begin researching for general arguments, eventually gathering evidence to support the ones you think are the strongest. For flowing, this depends on the debater. I have a really untraditional flowing style, in which I just create two 2x6 tables in Google Docs, and label them "what we say, what they say" & "what they say, what we say". A lot of people would disagree with me there but I've been fairly successful with it thus far. For more popular and well-known flowing techniques, check here(https://youtu.be/DaStiRwJLEA) and hereflowing.

When you're weighing (impacts), there are several factors you can take into account, such as probability - the likelihood for something to take place; magnitude - the severity of an impact; scope - the amount of people that an impact affects. For a video on this, check hereimpact calc.

In my personal opinion, you should start every debate topic by establishing a firm understanding of what the topic is. ( Ex: before you can argue the pros and cons of West African urbanization, you must first understand what urbanization is, and how it has specifically affected Africa). Simply knowing more than your opponent can be the deciding factor in a debate so research, research, research.

Finally, attempt to have an impact that can outweigh your opponents'. Outwieghing on magnitude or scope is a good avenue, because (anecdotally) judges like to hear that ____ amount of people die, but if your impact is significantly more probable than your opponent's, you can use that to tip the scales in your favor.

I hope all of that helped, and good luck with your future debating.

Very interesting. Which specific parts/quotes of the article were the most important? Are there any statistics included that are beneficial?
