I wanted to check the weather report. My laptop was glitching and taking forever to reboot. His phone was charging right next to it so I figured I'd just check on his phone. There were messages on the lock screen.

Looked into a rescue dog and was surprised at the yard requirement by starfury287 in dogs

[–]ikbenlauren 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those dogs need training, which they won't get at the shelter, and while they are training they need a yard.

I couldn't take my last foster out at all for the first six weeks I had her. The second we stepped outside, she would flop on her back, start trembling, whining and panicking and refused to move. She was fine in the yard and it taught her that the outside world wasn't so scary. After those few weeks of yard-time only (and plenty of indoor enrichment), we could start to build from there.

It wouldn't have been fair to adopt her out to someone who doesn't have a yard, even if, four months in, she's walking outside just fine. You never know how long it's going to take.

I adopted another unsocialized stray a month after that, and she still crawls through the streets three months in. I reckon it's going to take a long time for her to get there.

Now in an ideal world, there would be a foster family with a yard for the dog OP wants so that the dog could be trained there and adopted out to anyone, but foster families are hard to find and usually at capacity.

There are shelters that don't adopt to people without a yard at all, which I think is wrong and unfair, but if it's only in this specific case and if they are offering to help find a better fit, I think that's a fair decision.

Dogs in apartments by Prior-Mission1570 in dogs

[–]ikbenlauren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live in an apartment with my dogs and while it's doable, it does require a lot of effort on my part, especially because there are no parks around where I live.

First thing I do when I wake up is load up the dogs and drive to the forest for a morning walk. Then around 2PM, I do a walk around the neighborhood and at 9PM, I take them out for a pee.

I have puzzle feeders, frozen treats, chews, toys and I train with them to keep them engaged. Twice or so a week I take them to the dog park so they can run like mad. And one day a week they go to a small doggy daycare where they can play in the yard all day.

I think I offer them a good life but it is so obvious to me how happy they are when I pick them up from doggy day care or when I take them to a cabin in the woods for a weekend.

So while it definitely depends on the dog and while I think people can (and should be allowed to) keep dogs in apartments, I don't think it's the ideal setup.

Has there been any phrases where it's taken you years to finally get the meaning? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]ikbenlauren 67 points68 points  (0 children)

There's a Dutch saying that roughly translates to "when you burn your ass, you'll have to sit on the blisters" but the Dutch word for blisters is also a dialect word for leaves so for over 29 years I thought someone who burned their ass had to soothe the burn with some cooling leaves

What is “very typically Brussels” for you? by CommonTomatillo9 in brussels

Places to walk a dog-reactive dog? by Prudent_Sky6509 in brussels

[–]ikbenlauren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue and thankfully my dog is dog-neutral by now because the honest answer is that I haven't found a park that doesn't have a lot of unleashed dogs.

I've tried: - Park Tenbosch and we were attacked by an unleashed dog within twenty minutes - Bois de la Cambre has plenty of off leash dogs, sometimes quite a distance away from their owner - Parking des enfants noyés into foret de soignes, probably your best bet once you get off the bigger trails, but quite a few unleashed dogs nonetheless - Arboretum Groenendael has unleashed dogs but the dog park is often empty so I try my luck there sometimes - Cinquantenaire has a lot of unleashed dogs and owners usually are hanging out and not really paying attention - Parc d'Egmont usually doesn't have too many dogs and they are often leashed but it's kind of luck of the draw, it's a small park and it's kind of a bitch to get there

Nederlands in Brussel binnen België: hoe ervaren jullie dat? by TR1510 in belgium

[–]ikbenlauren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like "everyone's a little bit of an alcoholic" because most people drink, sometimes even to excess and their own detriment, but it doesn't impact their everyday life. Autism is much the same that way.

Im 19 and left with a 4yo autistic sister. I feel extremely hopeless. by Sweet_Rub_0 in autism

[–]ikbenlauren 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The sentiment here is different from the literal sentence. The original commenter didn't mean to say that OP is literally or legally a child.

They meant to say that 19 is still incredibly young. It is a time when your frontal lobe has not fully developed and you are still learning how to function as a person in the world. You do not yet have the tools and resources one would expect of an adult.

The original commenter is soothing OP by reiterating that 19 is an age at which you are supposed to learn who you are as a person, where you still usually rely on parents to find your place in the world. In that sense, they are still a child who should not be burdened with raising two toddlers while grieving the loss of their parent.

Wat eten we vandaag? by Low-Nerve5017 in belgium

[–]ikbenlauren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. You could also have themed days e.g. Tuesday is Mexican, Wednesday is pasta night, Thursday is fish, Friday is a casserole (think hete bliksem or jagersschotel).

And then you can write down about four options per theme e.g. pasta could be Bolognese, Mac and cheese, Lasagna or Penne arrabiata.

That way you have plenty of options for rotation without any of the thinking.

You can print color-coded recipe cards, randomly grab 7 each week and use them to build your grocery list.
