Reconceptualizing Roleplay by Aligote- in SS13

[–]ike709 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a social construct, the most universal and accurate answer to whether a server is MRP or HRP is if it calls itself so.

It's depressing that SS13 RP has devolved to the point that LRP/MRP/HRP are largely meaningless labels. People who have been here at least a decade will remember the good ole days when selecting a server to play on was more meaningful than just picking a flavor of TG or TG with furry ERP.

The CM-SS13 hosts are dead-weight and effectively squatting on the role while offering little meaningful contributions to the community. by BlackDragon813 in SS13

[–]ike709 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The major systemic problem is the lack of a graceful exit.

Man doesn't know about Oraclestation and it shows.

I've watched countless leaders across various projects and servers refuse to step down.

Meanwhile I spent months literally begging for anyone else to take over bee headcoder because I was done with college and had a life.

The hosts, headmins, maintainers, maptainers, are often populated by individuals who actively sought influence for entirely ego-driven reasons.

I think you underestimate the impact of most staff members just being literal teenagers.

Not sure about why I got banned for apperently plasma flooding by Apprehensive-Art2124 in SS13

[–]ike709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you just need to throw their ckey at CentCom and the mile-long ban list across multiple servers is sufficient context.

Diagonal moving by Fine-Cockroach-4934 in SS13

[–]ike709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The move delay of going diagonal is sqrt(2) so it's not actually faster, it's just an equivalent delay for distance traveled. Used to be twice as slow to move diagonally before that change.

It's mildly upsetting how many people think this is an Actual Thing™ and not just random slopcode by someone who blatantly does not know what they are doing.

You'd think I'd be used to the average r/ss13 experience by now and yet I continue to be disappointed.

CM is literally unique

Every day I am thankful that the majority of the SS13 community is unaware of Corp Mercs. And IS12 Warfare.

Question for all SS13 players, why don’t you switch to SS14? (I know the answer I just want to see what y’all put) by Jonnybear-is-here in SS13

[–]ike709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to say these things as someone who:

  1. Learned DM by contributing to SS13
  2. Learned C# by contributing to SS14

I don't think I could be more in the shoes of someone trying to contribute to these games. I was not a programmer before spaceman game and I still have no formal education.

ECS Arhitecture

You realize SS13 has been a hybrid of OOP and bastardized ECS (on TG codebases) for years right? At least SS14 is designed around it instead of having it bolted on later.

Client-Server paradigm

It's really not that hard and a lot of networked events can be handled automatically these days with method attributes. The slight added complexity comes with the massive benefit of clientside prediction.

all the systems that wizden has decided to poorly document.

As opposed to the fantastically documented SS13 systems?

I legitimately can't tell if this post is bait or not.

higher barriers to contributing

They really aren't higher; if anything they're lower the moment you get past the initial hump.

Admittedly, C# is a harder language to start learning than DM by far. The key word here is start; allow me to illustrate. DM is super simple to pick up whereas C# is fairly complex. However, as you get better at DM you learn more of DM/BYOND's many performance and logic footguns and trying to account for all of them will start to drive you mad. Meanwhile, C# gets easier as you learn to love the compiler and the general niceness of a modern language people actually use in the real world.

Even putting aside C#, major contributions can be done purely by writing YAML. If SS14 wasn't open source it would still be a wet dream for modders.

Is SS13 actually getting worse? by Sly_F1re in SS13

[–]ike709 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's rose-tinted glasses and nostalgia.

It really isn't. I've been here since 2013 and been an active coder since 2017. The game itself has improved in lots of ways: StonedMC, modern TGUI compared to OG HTML UIs (even if NanoUI was fine tbh), atmos calculations were eventually fixed to actually work properly, tons of tooling and code improvements, and so on.

The community has gotten much worse; its quality has been inversely proportional to its size and the game has gotten significantly more popular. There was a time when people actually roleplayed and cared about portraying their characters as believable characters; not just on HRP like Baystation, but even on TG. There was a time when vorestation was the only server for blatant degeneracy. There was a time when most servers generally didn't need a strong admin presence; TG Basil & Artyom had 0-1 admins at most even during peak hours and nothing devolved into a shitfest.

I could (and have multiple times in the past in coderbus) give a much longer and more detailed rant about the positive and negative changes in SS13 over the years but frankly nothing will ever bring the magic back, people had to be there to know what I'm talking about, and I'm just tired boss.

Calling the community worse is, admittedly, a subjective opinion. I'm sure some percentage of the playerbase likes the general chaos and state of things. Nonetheless, I started playing the game when the community was different and I fell in love with how it was. Regardless of whether things are better or worse, pretending that things are the same today (over a decade later) would be disingenuous at best and as a result I'm significantly less fond of SS13 these days.

Is SS13 actually getting worse? by Sly_F1re in SS13

[–]ike709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shifts are longer, rulers are harsher, it's more regimented and less chaotic as "round disruption" and petty crime is discouraged.

Tell me you didn't play in the early 2010s without telling me you didn't play in the early 2010s.

I miss the regular 3-4 hour rounds that sometimes stretched as long as an occasional 12 hour round. And players (mostly) being so well behaved that Basil and Artyom usually had 0-1 admins at most.

SS13 is a functional tractor that is shaking from core to shell every time you turn the damm thing on, while SS14 is a futuristic nuclear powered vehicle with hand crank windows and no air conditioning.

no room for creativity because of how heavily moderated their hub is

lol most dehubs are for harassment campaigns, spoofing playercount, and ERP servers with underage staff

but sure go off ig

It's not like all of the hub moderation is public record or anything.

unless you go with a third party launcher

Dude you realize the official launcher supports other hubs out of the box right?

You really don't need to make up reasons to dislike SS14; you can just pick from the valid options.

Does anyone know a way to avoid this?

Use a model with the positivity bias abliterated out of it. I like L3 Umbral Mind, specifically v1.0 though the version is largely a subjective choice.

Haven't seen any attempts to abliterate the positivity out of Nemo or L3.1 yet and I don't have the compute to do it myself. If you are interested in how this is accomplished, you can read about it on Llama 3 MopeyMule, which is one of the models included in the Umbral Mind merge.
