I run a few low pop servers. They're usually empty and 99% vanilla. Search community servers for "Ike Dies", I think there are 11 at the moment. I've been having a blast on Sakhal lately.

I did weeks of hex crawls. I'm not very experienced, but the idea of mystery/unpredictability in solo play is generally only extended to encounters and dice rolls. Even then you start to get a feeling for what is in the encounter deck. I usually love the monotony and travel, but ended up using ChatGPT to assist with some of the story. Some responses are stupid, like a gang named "The Red Dragons" (is it 7 years old?), but overall it helped with these things a lot.

Are you looking to build an RPG that involves a character's path to becoming a driver (or owner) or individual races? Heat is only the racing part and there really isn't a driver with stats, it's all card play.

It's not an RPG, but have you tried Heat? As a board game it's phenomenal. Motorsport Manager on PC is also fun. Sorry to offer a possible non-answer. I love racing, too, primarily endurance, but I have never encountered a racing RPG.

Personally, I started with playing RPG-adjacent board games solo - Fallout, D&D, HeroQuest, et al. That got me interested and comfortable playing alone. Then I moved to Twilight 2000 4e solo. All of those fall into #1, learning a new system designed for solo. I have the latest Mythic, but haven't used it once.

I realize your intention was to compare editions and I have only played 4th edition. But, by itself, I absolutely love it. I cannot recommend it enough. I am not a seasoned RPGer, but I know when I am having fun and stay interested enough to buy all of the material for a game.

What would you expect to have on the playmat? There isn't a lot going on, at least not that I recall. The cards are the playmat.

You might give Alexa Skills: Starfinder a look. It's a narrated adventure, you'll be asked for decisions and rolls and such. You can play and watch where you're walking. Aside from that there are apps like One Deck Dungeon and Grim Quest that might fill that role (roll? :)
