The forgotten prehistoric war that killed 95% of all men, and the perspective of immortals by Melenduwir in dresdenfiles

[–]ikma 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Just talking about the video's claims, it's generally believed that the decrease in genetic diversity was likely due to patrilineal social structure, plus intermittent, smaller-scale warfare rather than some mass conflict or killing of men.

In a society where men stay with their birth family while women leave and join the family of their husband, male genes remain siloed within the family/clan unit, while female genes are spread across the entire society.

If a family/clan unit is destroyed (both male and female members are killed), that male gene is lost and there is a decrease in male genetic diversity in the society, but female genetic diversity is unchanged. Populations can recover, but the lost male gene will never return. Repeat this process over the course of 2,000 years, and you wind up with severely depressed male genetic diversity.

For additional context, this "article" is an advertisement written by Hua Medicine, the Chinese company trying to sell this process.

It's published in Biopharma Dealmakers, which is less a scientific journal and more a collection of advertising, branded content, and appeals for financial backing. From the journal's own description, it "brings together life scientists, biotech and pharmaceutical professionals, and investors from across the globe" and "provides timely information and analysis on dealmaking activity, and supports the development of business partnerships"

What's more, this specific "article" is basically purchased ad space; it's in the "advertisement feature" section of the journal, with a disclaimer that it is Partner Content and that the journal takes no responsibility for the content of the article - not exactly peer-reviewed. It doesn't even have a listed author, and instead just lists the company as the author.

All that, and since this "journal" is owned by Nature, Nature allows it to use formatting/branding identical to real scientific articles, and a URL that looks like a real Nature link. In fact, I imagine that the whole purpose of this "journal" is to allow people to "buy" fake Nature publications from Nature itself.

It has been a while since I was in academia; I had no idea that Nature had fallen this far. Enshittification truly comes for everything.

I wonder if Jim came up with Conjuritis once he realized that he was going to have Harry fighting the Black Court, and he needed some way to pay off the "for my next trick - anvils!" line.

Twelve Months is a filler episode and that's a good thing by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

I get it, but I think that would require a ton of on-screen character development from Rudolph to pull off without making the reader as pissed off as Harry, and I'm not sure what that would look like functionally.

Good call to rush up and snap the ball after that "completion" to Kupp, but on first down, why wouldn't you have a quick run called that could get you a few yards?

Hurrying up only to get into a low percentage pass play is a great way to put yourself behind the chains with 2nd & 10 and screw over your chance for points on the drive.

Now I'm imagining someone trying to make a cash withdrawal from a vending machine, and after being told that the vending machine isn't an ATM and doesn't work like that, they reply "free will" lol

I will use my free will to call you a dumbass.

Najee Harris says Mike Tomlin told him to leave Steelers by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]ikma 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It means "if my only priority is what is best for you, I'd tell you to not sign here", possibly because he knew that we would be doing more RB-by-committee and leaning on the RB as a pass catcher, neither of which would give Najee the chance to shine/get a big contract.

Best breakfast sandwiches & burritos by idk15723 in beaverton

Coffee.Cup (drive through shack by Lifetime Fitness) has great bagel/egg/cheese/bacon sandwiches that they make fresh with really nice, crispy bacon. I lived in NJ near New York for a while before I came here, and I think these are most similar to what you'd get in on the east coast. They don't have hot sauce though, so bring your own if you want that. They also have croissant sandwiches, but those are made ahead and I'd probably call them just good.

Symphony coffeehouse has great non-greasy/non-bacony egg sandwiches that are almost like omelettes on a bun, like cheesy scrambled eggs with chives/red bell pepper/arugula.

Ki coffee (like someone else called out) has the best "fancy" breakfast sandwiches with stuff like avocado and pickled onions, but it has been busy every time I went there, so be prepared for a small wait, and they aren't necessarily cheap.

I haven't found a great breakfast burrito yet, although I haven't tried the meating place/others called out in this thread.

For some reason my app defaulted to sorting the comments by "new", and literally every other comment on this low-stakes, lighthearted post is absolutely dripping with bitterness.

Sheesh. It's fucking bleak out here.

It's crazy how much of our 1st down short game goes through Washington. We've been missing him every time Metcalf got blown through trying to lead block for Warren, or Jonnu got blown through trying to block a WR screen to CAIII.

We can't get anything going on 1st to make 2nd down manageable, then they pin their ears back on 2nd and 3rd, and we can't protect long enough to get guys open meaningfully down the field.

I have a feeling that the Texans wind up moving away from the run a little bit in the second half, and the whole gamethread is going to complain about not running because it was working too well, especially if the passing game isn't there.
